I convinced my buddy to buy the OF1010 and he called me to let me know his 1/4 bits don't fit. Since I have the 1400 I was a bit perplexed. He said there was a 1/4 collet in the systainer but he has no clue on how to change them and surprisingly there's no mention/instructions. He's prying on things so I told him to hold on till I could see if anyone knows how to change out the 8mm for the 1/4?

It just unscrews, right? I don't have a 1010 to know, but every router I've seen just unscrews the collet. Lock the spindle, though.

yes just unscrew it. the only thing i can think of is it is at that last spot where you need your wrench again before it comes right off. hope that makes sense.

He says he's fully unscrewed the collet nut and the 8mm cylinder won't budge. He's hesitant to grab it with pliers but has tried to wedge it out with a screwdriver tip. He's talking about the 8mm collet cylinder that's not coming out.

When I have had sticking collets I have been able to release them by thumb pressure at an angle to the nut. If this fails do not use pliers. Try using a flat piece of soft metal (aluminium) rod to gently tap the collet. The nut should be supported of course.

After unscrewing the collet, I've just tapped mine side to side a couple of times with the wrench. Usually comes right out after two or three taps just hard enough to get it away from the wall of the shaft a little. Seems like the collets go in tight enough that it makes a friction seal. Great to help the bits stay in tight, not so easy to change collets...
Instructions seem to be Festool's weakest point.

Thanks guys. Evidently when he got the router it had the 8mm collet installed and he didn't realize it was in there and tried to install the 1/4 in bit. He tightened it all the way down which really wedged the 8mm in there. Kind of like when they tell you in the instructions to not tighten without a cutter installed. We were able to tap it out with a screwdriver and all is well.
