Peter,

I can see the videos now.  What is the purpose of signing up.  Seemed like a pain when I tried.  I just wonder if its needed.
Signing up sure is a pita, I haven't been able yet to do so because I don't have a mobile phone.
FWIW I don't have a mobile phone either and had no problem signing up.

Do you have Google ID? That will do as your YouTube Sign in.

No I don't. I never had any reason yet to sign up for any of Google's services. Anyway, I registered with YouTube but at the end of the registration they asked my mobile phone number so they could text the confirmation code to me. They said it was to check from which country I was. There was also an option to email them if you didn't have mobile phone, so I did that but haven't gotten an answer yet.

I signed in with my google ID and then it wanted me to pick another ID and password and register with more personal info.  I didn't continue.

To answer the questions:

You do not need to join to view only to post.  I believe that by joining you can see a history of videos that you have watched and they will make suggestions about similar.  You can turn that off or suspend it.

I was trying to spur the numbers of users.  With 7600+ members here and the long spoken desire to have videos - just thought it might be a good idea.

I tried out the sign up process.  Here is what I had to do.  Mine was a little more involved than your will be because I already had a google account and a you tube account.

I had to create a new email address with my provider - You won't have to.

I then went and set up a new user at YouTube.com.  I typed in a name.  It was already taken.  I chose an alternate.  I selected a password.  Re-entered it.  Typed the security word.  Selected my gender - I could have lied.  I selected my country - Don't lie - might be tied into ISP addresses.  I selected my birthdate - I could have lied.

It then told me that I was logged in already on my google account and that I needed to log out - You won't have to.

I did that and finished.

They then sent a confirmation email to the email I supplied and I clicked the link.

Done.

That process for me wasn't that more difficult than most.

Except that I had to enter a mobile phone number to receive the confirmation code instead of just simply mailing it to my email address. Apparently they have a different set of rules for non-US users.

Even if I had a mobile phone I wouldn't give it to some website. That crosses a line with me.

Festooltv rocks!!  Thanks Alex, Peter, Brice, and Shane!

Already learned a thing or two about my new Kapex and still on my first cup of coffee!

Maybe I'll get a video camera and post some "even this idiot can make furniture with Festool" videos....

It must be dependant on the country you are in. I am in Japan and had an e-mail confirmation code.

Anyone know why some of the Festool videos state "The Video Is Unavailable?" They show down the right hand side where all the videos are displayed, but they won't play.  I can't access Festool MFS or the 2 about installing a multi-point lock.  I didn't check them all but I'm sure there are more.

I got a couple to play.  I checked on mine that has been up for a long time.  Nope.

This is a you tube issue.  I'll let Shane know.

Peter

Edit:  I went to youtube normally.  I then tried to find my video.  I could then play it.  Hmmm?

Looks like there is a problem on YouTube's end.  It only appears to be videos submitted by other members that are experiencing the problem.  Any videos submitted by us (Festool USA) are working fine.  I'll see if I can get in touch with their support people and figure it out.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Tried again today and found a few worked, but most did not -- even many of those submitted by Festool aren't working.

Funny, T.  Well, I haven't heard back from them yet but I did just check it out and the interface has changed for the Group Channels.  There are additional options available to administer it and some page layout changes.  I suspect the issues are related to the "new and improved" group channels changes being implemented.  I hope it will clear itself up before long.

Update: Just found this posted on the Google support forum website.  They are apparently aware of the problem and working on it.

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=173bb5d064b6bf0e&hl=en

Quote
Known Issue: bug playing videos in YouTube Groups

Hey guys,

We've seen many of you report that videos you've submitted to a YouTube Group are not playing on the page. A  grey box appears in place of where the video should appear in the player and sometimes an error message is displayed stating that the video is no longer available. The video is in fact still available (from the uploader's channel and in search), but its just showing as unavailalbe in the Group setting.

This situation has been reported to our Team here in San Bruno, and our engineers are currently investigating the issue and working on a fix.

Many thanks to you all for letting us know about this bug, & we really appreciate your patience as we work on a fix.

All the best from this end!

~ Liz (on behalf of the YouTube Team)

If you are suffering from withdrawl symptoms and want to watch Festool TV follow these steps:

Go to Festool TV:   www.festool.tv

Find the video you want to see on the right side of the screen.

Right click on the video.

Select open in new window.

BINGO!

At end of video, close the window and right click on the next.

Pop some corn and enjoy!

Just a quick update on the YouTube group channel (http://festool.tv).  It appear YouTube has made progress on the changes they are implementing for the group channel functionality on their site.  As a result, it appears that all of the videos on our group channel are now accessible again.  Just a reminder that anyone can add their videos to the channel to share.

EDIT:  link typo corrected
