VAC-SYS Question
« on: December 29, 2018, 01:12 PM »
I already have the VAC-SYS with a single base. I may acquire a second base since I often work with long boards.

Q: Should I go with the SE-2 or get another SE-1 base?

I know the SE-2 comes with hose and fittings but do the Oblong cup is ok on long boards or the round one is better.

I have both, the oblong works just fine. Eventually you’ll get the end set, the narrow one has saved me a few times.

You can also make adapters for various sizes you commonly work with.

Look for deals via Amazon.de and Amazon.co.uk. I ended up getting the set of cups without a systainer for a substantial savings.

Thanks for the suggestion, found one at 162$ instead of 224$  [big grin] Do you know if the shipping make any sense for such a light item?

With Amazon you can just add them and it will show you the shipping costs. Maybe since last changes only at the end of the process, but before confirming anyway.

Shipping the other way around is usually completely out of the question.

Like with Woodpeckers. Shipping one tiny tool (like the Pocket T-Square) is $47...   [blink]

No doubt there are sellers picking the most expensive courier the other way around too, but looking at consumer pricing from DHL I can ship to the USA for €24 for 2 kg or €32 for 5 kg. Pricing from our former national post monopoly is about the same.

I’ve shipped stuff from Europe via DHL and it’s inexpensive and fast.

However shipping to Europe, I found the best rates were from USPS.  They were half the price of FedEx and UPS.

Mario LV still has GRK screws on the website and GRK still lists them as a retailer.

HEre's a link to GRK retailer locator.

Home Depot also carries them.

Yeah they still have them but not in the size I use for the cabinets. I use #8 1 1/4 & 1 1/2 . There was only the 2" + in store  [sad]

A few weeks before xmas I order a box of each on amazon, 1,000 & 1,300 and the carrier broke the boxes apart so they never get delivered.

Same thing with home depot & Ottawa fasteners, they only have the longer screws.

Hey Mario, US Tool & Fastener also stocks the R4 #8 x 1 1/4" and the #8 x 1 1/2" screws. They used to offer smaller quantity breaks a couple of years ago.

It may be worth an email or phone call.

https://www.ustoolandfastener.com/brands/GRK-Fasteners.html

Menards also stocks both sizes in quantities of 110 each.  Menards will also special order.

Thanks for looking into that Cheese. I'm still able to find some from Lee Valley and others. The problem is they only have them in a 100 pieces packages and limited quantities. If you look at Lee Valley they do not stock the 1 1/4 & 1 1/2 #8 & #9 anymore and when they did it was 7$/100. I can have the 1 1/4 1,300 for under $68 shipping and taxes included from Amazon.ca but last time it failed  [crying]

Ordering from outside of Canada is too expensive. I have to pay an additional 30% convertion + shipping, taxes & duties

The links you provided do not ship to Canada  [sad], even if they would ship the cost would be ridiculous.

Hi Mario. Just noticed this...
https://www.amazon.ca/GRK-772691020697-Number-8-4-Inch-100-Piece/dp/B001PCZ7GO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1548380468&sr=8-2&keywords=grk+screws

Greg

I ordered those twice (the 1,300 pieces), the first time the box got crushed during transportation and never reach destination. The second order should be in tomorrow hopefully  [big grin]

I played a bit with the narrow cup and the VAC-SYS. Realized that I also need the small cup  [crying] so I'm on my way to L.V. again.

Honestly that's the strongest screws I ever used. I never seen a GRK screw break but I'm sure others here will tell you stories  [big grin]. From GRK I've used Cabinet screws and R4  exclusively.

Melamine? Not sure, i never built something from melamine that would require enough stress to test how screws hold. Melamine is the second material I hate the most working with, after MDF  [scared]
