Apart from cost it would probably be the need for the adhesive carrier (tape) to be as strong or stronger than the glue and yet be just microns thick.
For such a product to be a commercially viable alternative to modern adhesives it would need to bring a lot to the table.
Ease of use.
Ease of clean up.
Minimal glue lines.
Strength.
Water resistance/proof.
Durability.
To name a few, a flooring contractor I know reckons flooring tape will only last a few years in situ if you are lucky.
