I shot some Zinsser latex primer on one side of my house that is made of redwood T&G and there appears to be some staining where there is bare wood. Should I be using oil based instead? Don't really want to as I'm spraying and I don't want to toxicity of mineral sprits to deal with especially with the Wagner Paint Crew sprayer I'm using. Guess I could brush and roll but spraying is so much faster and even. Mahalo!

I've used both for exterior recently.  I bought a new product to me, Styx, a water based bonding primer that I was using on Ipe.  I went to SW and of the two primers they had specific to this usage Styx looked the easier to spray.  I liked it, even though I rarely like to spray water-borne product form my HVLP.  It went on great and I did not have to cut it down to get it to flow through my gun.

I also found that if I waited 24hours befor I sprayed the top coat that it greatly reduced the amount of tanon that bled through.  The tanon that bled through wiped off easily and did not repeat.  I think the primer cured underneath the top coat.

Cool. I was thinking of going HVLP but having to thin the latex down to shoot seemed to be too much work. I opted for a Wagner Paint Crew unit that I shot one wall with and the finish seemed fine. The bummer is that I can't really use it for finer work like furniture so it might go the way of Craigslist once I'm done. I think I'll be fine with the Zinsser and the top color will be a darker grey so it should cover fine. Thanks for the advice.
