What to do with raw wood material from beech?
« on: January 04, 2016, 03:01 AM »
Hello,

we have made lumber from a tree in the wood for heating. Then i spoke to a boyhood friend who learned carpenter, and when he heard about the firewood i made from the tree, he scold me that one could make nice furniture out of this sort of wood. I have left only some meters from the tree, so i thought, maybe i could cut slices (like on the photo) and make a small table (rectangular) from it, since i have no tool to cut beams or shelfs.

I would like to ask, if anyone has an idea what to do with the rest of the wood, it is about 2 meters of the trunk left?

You have a chainsaw ... imagine what you could do with a patient and steady hand [wink]

(and maybe a chain sharpening file)

You could take it to the nearest sawmill and have them cut up the trunk.
What i'd do if i were you: get some wedges and try to split the trunk myself.
And then build something, maybe some simple garden furniture.
Have you got the roots left: let them dry, they may have a beautiful 'maserung'.
I think your friend is right: try to do something with the remaining tree!
Just for today..

Hm, yes, i already thought about cutting a chair in one piece from the trunk with my small chainsaw. But i also thought about a box or cassette or something. Maybe searching for a sawmill which has time left to work on it to cut wedges. First of all, i cut slices and build a small table.

Quartersawn beech will fetch a very nice price to wooden planemakers.
