In the Sketch-up blog entry the author broadly states that the freeware version is an important part of Sketch-up ecosystem what ever that means. I would guess it's a non-committing way of saying 'we'll try to keep a free version available after the merger, but can't guarantee one yet.'

For now, pretty much everything will remain as it is. They will support the free version, and you can still upload to the 3D warehouse and to Google Earth. I'm a Land surveyor and Trimble is not known for doing any thing for free. I think it is just away for them to provide their own product to compete with Autodesk. I don't know if it is still free, but I think Intellicad is still free if not pretty cheap.

Trimble Sketchup doesn't quite ring as well... I will keep an open mind on this whole thing, but had I known this before, I don't think I would have purchased the Pro version. Are they going to sick me with a maintenance contract to stay current on all upgrades?

Sketchup is off the menu for me. Done!
I am currently using Leica Equipment and have used Trimble in the past. Both make good equipment but almost all of those companies are going to closed systems while the trend is for open systems. The current trend in all these companies is to get you on a subscription even for equipment. The only way you can upgrade the software is if you are on subscription. I pay about $600/mo to Autodesk, ESRI, and Leica combined. I call it extortion. Most of the updates are for bug fixes that should be free. Now adobe is trying a similar model. Hope Festool doesn't require you to be on current subscription to update to the latest tool.  Edited for content - P. Halle- moderator |

Well, at least we still have a working version already installed. The current one fully meets my needs and demands and I have only experienced a few bugs - so if version 9 comes out with a price tag I'll stick with the one I have.
