[Sortainer9] locks keeps coming undone.
« on: October 31, 2017, 08:00 AM »
I've got a load of T-loc systainers and a Sortainer9. The sortainer has to be on the bottom of the stack, as it is still a classic style Systainer. The problem I'm having is that the systainer keeps coming undone and it falls to the floor. It's gotten pretty marred up from the couple of times it has fallen. Also the drawers get stuck and the contents spill when it falls, so it's really an issue. Today it took my CTL midi with it.

Do you guys know if this is a common problem? It's my only classic systainer, so maybe I'm not doing it right, however if I use my Systainers on the CTL midi, with the classic locks engaged, it does seem to work properly. The sortainer is not that heavy, it's mostly electrical fittings and tools in there.

Hi,

  Welcome to the forum!

So the four latches on the Sortainer are not holding / popping open?

Do they all seem to snap in tight when latching it?

Thank you for the warm welcome.

You understand correctly. It's usually the two grey back latches that come undone. I feel like they click into place, but somehow they still manage to unlatch. It happens quite fast too, today I double checked them before heading down some steps and they instantly came undone, sending my vacuum and the sortainer flying.

OK, just to be certain ......... you are pulling them up to the top latching position that overlaps the upper unit, right?

Also do you have any other latches that you could temp swap from another Classic in order to test if it is the latches or the Sort / Sys side that is causing the problem?

I don't think the systainer and dust extractor mating latches were designed to pick up the weight of a dust extractor.

I always transport dust extractor with my attachments and corded
Drills and 65 in one stack and this are the only classics I own
There must be an other reason
Shoot us a picture when you have them attached

Some thing is definitely wrong with either your latches or process.  I have an eclectic mix of classic (10-12) and newer 90+ systainers.  I keep my various nailers and staplers in the four drawer...three small, one large, classics.  They tend to be very heavy when loaded with nails and staples.  Mine are actually harder to disengage than the newer, I often have to use a flat screwdriver to flip open.

At least an (somewhat) empty one should be no problem, I carry my my CT 26 through a systainer on it on a regular basis. A CT 48 fully loaded might be a different thing, but with a MIDI it shouldn't be an issue at all.

Some photos would certainly help us to help.

I'd also take a look at the latches...if anything, the problem with the original old style Systainer latches was that they were too difficult to unlatch. As rst noted, I also always needed to use a screwdriver to open mine.

There's a small nub on each side of the latch that determines how difficult/easy the latches will be to use. I actually sanded the nub down just a bit so that I could open them with my thumbs.

Latches wear out with use. You can order new ones from Festool.

I'm not actually at work right now, so I'll shoot some pictures or video later this week. The latches do have some play up and down and are not difficult at all to unlatch. I could do it with my pinky finger no problem. The systainer is brand new, so I might hit Festool up for some replacement latches.

If they're brand new the latches are good and replacing them won't help.

A problem with the new T-loc systainers is that the nibs on which the latches catch are smaller than with the classic systainer.
