Sortainers ... not made from feathers
« on: June 09, 2012, 01:52 PM »
Until I just collected 2x Sys3 6 drawer Sortainers, I had no idea how much they'd weigh - hadn't even thought about it in fact. Well, they're HEAVY.

For some reason I thought they'd weigh just a little more than a normal Sys3, but no. I'll need to put them on the scales to be certain, but I'd say they're easily 2.5x a normal Sys3.

Time to go back to the gym [eek]

They have quite a metallic structure. It appears to be made of steel.

If you don't have time fore the gym, it is possible to save some weight by removing the drawers [poke]

If you take out the drawers you can see the metal "beams" and "posts " that help strengthen the case.  Also the plastic areas are effectively double  layer in most parts.

Yes - they're really substantial ... I may get a couple more. I was on the fence with them in terms of relative value, but I really like them. Can't see myself going for the 12's though, maybe a couple more 6's.

The small and medium drawers can be swapped  with each other. Two for one and vice versa.

Ahh - I see. So 2x Sort6 + 1x Sort 12 = 3x Sort8 ... Cool. Now we can do fractions with Systainer Math  [big grin]

I too was always shocked, and still am, by their weight.  Overbuilt.  Certainly durable and will last a very long time.

You guys can't work on site.

A worm drive weighs more than my Sort 5.

Through the working day the heaviest thing I probably lift is my coffee cup  [sad]

I really need some exercise!

This reappears every so often.  About 6 mos. ago I was taken aback with the same thought.  So, I weighed my new purchase. The bulk of the weight is in the chassis cabinet which as stated is standard to take combinations of trays. I unscientifically, inserted what is presumably the median weight, e.g. equal portions of small medium and large trays, 3, 3, and 3 or whatever it is.

It weighed 11 pounds empty. But, gosh, is it solid and the secure trays - firmly lock in and so forth is sure superior.

Also, rarely mentioned, the tops of the systainers make good small work surfaces for miscellaneous parts in progress, assembly, etc. without rolling off or all over a cluttered workbench - not that anyone here has cluttered benches.  [blink]
