Truck Tool Boxes that fit Systainers?
« on: November 10, 2014, 06:46 PM »
I'm a finish carpenter and my boss just let me know he's getting me a new truck.  I lobbied for a van but no dice.  My current truck has a high rise topper with built in toolboxes on the side.  It just barely won't fit a systainer so the covered area over the bed is where they go now.  Its a decent setup but the side boxes leak in the rain and the wind noise is almost unbearable.  Anyone know of any brand of tool boxes (side/top mount) that will fit a systainer in normal position?  I'm heavily invested in systainers for both festool and nonfestool stuff.  Any other ideas for sys storage in a pickup are welcomed.
thanks
Dan

The only thing I know of is a knack chest box,not so much a truck box,but it will fit the bed of your truck and open big to allow access to the systainers.
It's not perfect because it uses a lot of the bed,but it will keep the boxes safe.
I have one at my house to keep my tools in,cuz I just have a barn without doors.
The one I have is 2'x2'4'.
I have the same issue, and am finding my truck to be less than perfect everyday.
Another option is a trailer, witch is what i am thinking about.
Good luck,Charlie

What about one of those truck bed sliders?  You could move it from truck to truck, I think.

I went for a high rise topper with side doors but otherwise empty. I made my own shelving inside the cap, with one row of shelving accessible from outside with an additional row on top. The largest weatherguard truck box I believe will hold quite a few systainers, I don't think you can get a 5 in there height wise though.

Murtaugh,
Thats a great setup.  Anymore info on it.  It doesn't look like your using slides.  What do the drawers run on?  UHMW?  Looks like the top drawer is held captive by the top piece attached with uprights connected to the bottom box?

Thanks!

The drawers run on roller bearings mounted down the sides about 6" apart. A strip of acrylic is attached between drawer and bearing to prevent grooves worn in drawer box.

The top slides on the acrylic strips alone with the help of wax. And held in place by the uprights mounted to box. Top is 48" inside to carry sheet goods with tools removed.

Murtaugh, nice setup, I had something similar, but not as nice, with my old truck. Now I have a F150 so I'm doing something new.
Where did you get the drawer handles? I like those.

OP, look at System One toolboxes and lumber racks.

I had to add some spacers to my a.r.e truck top and i was able to get my systainers to fit.  I took out the tool box and added 2 inches in depth and they fit perfectly.

Can of petrol, matches.  Never been keen on 'Trucks' for a proper tradesmans tools.
Pickups might be ok for arborists and farmers but pretty feckless for carrying tools that are better kept secure and dry.

This is late but for those who have not bought a Truck box yet.  A.R.E. will make the boxes deeper for a cost.  Not sure what it was but it fit's Systainers perfect.  There is a trade off with inside measurement.

I can't imagine why your boss wouldn't rather put you in a van, there cheaper and much more practical, just saying
