Domino KV-SYS D8 Knockdown Hardware - Auxiliary Manuals?
« on: August 15, 2018, 11:28 AM »
Just got a KV-SYS D8 set.  Is there an auxiliary manual anywhere that has more info than the minimal manual that comes with the set?  If not, is there a particularly good YouTube video or set of videos that covers more than just unboxing the kit?

Looks like @Peter Parfitt has a good set of YouTube videos on the set for the Domino XL.  Does that apply to this smaller set as well?  It looks like there are some important differences.

I bought the kit today and now see that it does just four joints. Is there a possible 5th joint with this setup or have I mistaken it with the XL?
I have two pieces of wood that are coplanar that will be making a countertop (think large panel). I need to draw those two surfaces together and want to use domino connectors for that since I cannot get clamping power on the setup. Any advice would be much appreciated!

You can use the KV D8 (I would suggest the KV as the anchor is easy to position, just mortice like you would do for a normal domino, and should take more load while the KV-LR32 would likely pull out easier as of the smaller contact surface of the thread and the hole for the bolt would be more difficult to position precisely) to connect two panels by their faces.

In case the panels are thick enough I would use the 14mm connectors (as they're more sturdy and certainly give way more clamping force), having to resort to the D8 ones I would simply use enough of them (at least twice as much as the 14mm ones). And do a destructive test with scraps that give a compareable lever before building the finished part.

Thank you @Gregor.
Yes, my preference is to use the 14mm connectors. Am I correct in assuming I cannot use those with the DF500, but instead have to use the DF700?

Yes: the 8mm ones can mounted using both the Domino 500 and 700XL, but for the 14mm ones you need the latter.

The 8mm may be viable for your task though, when fixing the top in place (in case there are eg. cabinets where it's reasting on to screw it to) after pulling it together with KV ones - especially in case it would be mount-once where you glue the seam and basically only use the connectors for initial clamping till it's dry - when combined with enough normal dominos to have a strong enough connection that relieably prevents lateral movement.

On free-floating tops (that could see more stress as they can be ab/used as levers by humans) and things more structural I would use the 14mm.

By the looks of this I assume that it's not strong enough to be used as a bed bolt replacement? Or would this have enough holding power with a few structural dominoes to add support to actually keep the bed frame together without wiggling/loosening over time?
The sky's the limit in my workshop, literally. [big grin]

I'd advise against that. The D8 system is pretty slick but it'll never hold up to the forces exposed to it in a bed. The thread used on the mating pieces is only an M4. Better to use the D14 system that was designed for that purpose.

Michael, it was a Festool produced booklet that nicely presented 20-25 different projects that utilized the D14 connector. Woodcraft had one to look at as a reference. Unfortunately, it grew legs and walked away.  [mad] [mad]
