Course Description:
We are now calling for entries for a 2-day class focused on the practical application of the Festool Router System.  The class will take place at Festool's Training Center in Lebanon, IN (just NW of Indianapolis), and will be primarily geared towards professional applications.

In this class, we will cover the full Festool router lineup, including the MFK 700, OF 1010, OF 1400, and OF 2200, as well as key system accessories such as the MFS, LR32 Hole boring system, and FS Guide rails.  Participants should expect to walk away with a range of broadly applicable skills, with emphasis on panelized doors, circles and arcs, cabinet shelf pins and hinge boring, inlays, fluting, and edge-banding, among others.

Participants will leave with an improved understanding of advanced routing techniques as they apply to trim carpentry, cabinet work, and furniture construction.  Real-world, application-based exercises will enhance the participant's understanding of how to efficiently employ the Festool Router System in the shop and on the jobsite.

Since most of the two days will be spent in the shop actually using the tools, we request that registrants have some previous knowledge of the Festool Router System, and/or the basics of trim carpentry, cabinet or furniture construction.

Though we expect to add classes geared toward novices in the future, this should be considered an intermediate to expert-level class.

What will I learn?

Precision in shop and on jobsite with Festool Routers
  • MFK 700 Trim router - Precision and flexibility
  • OF 1010 Plunge Router - Small in size, big on performance
  • OF 1400 Plunge Router - Our most versatile router
  • OF 2200 Plunge Router - A portable shaper

Enhanced efficiency with Festool System Components
  • Arcs, circles and raised panels with the Festool MFS system
  • Efficient cabinet construction with the LR 32 Hole boring system
  • Boring of hinge plates and shelf pins on cabinet sides
  • 35 mm Hinge boring on cabinet doors
  • Routing fluted columns with the Festool parallel guide
  • Clean and efficient edge banding with the MFK 700 and OF1010 plate systems
  • Routing grooves and slots with the OF 2200 and Plexiglas template
  • Precision routing with FS guide rails
  • Precision inlays with Festool Routers

How do I apply and how are participants selected?
If you are interested in participating, please click here to complete this online survey, and provide a few details about yourself.  If you have applied for previous end-user training events, you will need to re-apply for this one.  Attendees are accepted on a first-come basis.

We will notify selected participants (as well as a handful of alternates) by email. The one thing we ask of our selected participants is that you arrive on time and stick around for the full two days.

Travel and Accommodations:
Participants are responsible for all travel and accommodations.  We will be glad to help you make hotel reservations at our preferred local establishment (Farifield Inn, 86th St, Indianapolis).  And for those participants staying at that hotel, Festool will arrive for pick-up on both days at 7:30am.

Festool will provide basic refreshments (bagels and coffee) in the morning at our Training Center, and lunch will be provided both days.   There will be an offsite group dinner on the first night.

If anyone drops out, could I please be on the "add at the last minute" list?  I'll try to keep the dates free just in case. How many are in the class?

I got in from the class today. I had a great time meeting all the guys from the class and the rest of the Festool staff. Festool treated very well during our stay. Michael Williams (VP of marketing at Festool USA) cooked ribs for dinner and they were a big hit (thank you Michael Thumbs Up). Getting to meet Minnie, Rick and of course Shane was a real treat. They welcomed us warmly and made us feel right at home. A big thanks also goes out to the trainers, Brian and Steve. Thanks

If you enjoy spending time around tools and guys that love tools too, do yourself a favor and come out to one of the classes. If time allows I'll try to write a little more about the class and post some pictures.

Brice,

Glad to see you got a chance to go and experience.  Regarding your posting about the class, I have one word for you as co-Moderator here - caffeine.

Seriously, I am sure that many would love a write-up of your experiences.  I sure would!

Another who got to go this week!!!   Big Grin
Got to meet a great bunch of classmates. There were several professionals at the class and a bunch of great characters!! Brice was every bit as impressive in person as his posts are here on the FOG. He demoed a couple of his ideas. Think my role was to show what NOT to do during the various excercises! (Sorry Chris!) Sadly was not able to successfully badger Brian and Steve to show us any new stuff.  Sad Like Brice said - the ribs were excellent. Think that was what the $100 fee was for!!   Wink

This was my second trip and the hospitality was just awesome. If you ever get the chance to stop by there, do drop in. They love the company.

I'm sure I'll write up something. I wish I took more pictures.

That reminds me, I don't have a group of the class, can one of the attendees send me a copy? Thanks.

Sorry Peter for holding you back.  That goes for my previous lab partner as well, Andrew.

Class was great.  Great group of guys and as usual the instructors were spot on.  We had the privilege of meeting the head trainer for Festool as he audited our class and jumped in as needed.  I got to meet Steve from Hederson and was very impressed with his approaches to practical application, and how the two instructors played of each other to expand our understanding of the tools.  I'm looking forward to a future class with Steve in his primary field of expertise.

Food was great, the hotel that Minnie hooked us up with was very nice and I think everybody felt right at home, again.  All in all it is a great operation and I highly encourage all my fellow FOGgers to take a class or two.

Thanks Brice for the demo on your set up for mass line boring.  I look forward to using the idea and saving some time.  You Da Man.

As others have said, it was a great time with a great group of people.
The Festool family made us all feel like we were all part of the family.
I came home with a lot of information on how to better use the Festool tools I have.
Brian, Steve, Brice & Chris H. did an excellent job of presenting the information.
I am looking forward to future classes.

If you are considering any of these classes but feel that you may be under-skilled or not really qualified based upon the class description - JUST DO IT! I was fortunate to be paired up with Chris Hughes - an extremely talented professional. He was full of ideas and tips himself. I had a great time with him and learned lots. The point is, these classes have a mix of attendees and Brian and Steve pair up the teams as a mix of skills. You can learn so much from the instructors AND your team-mate.
It was just great meeting so many who post here. WonderWino, Dave Ronyak, Chris Rosenberger, Chris Hughes, Jay, Brice, Tim. Thank you all for making this such a wonderful event.

Harry - just pay attention when the instructor tells you that carbide can cut aluminum!!

I also had a great time at the class this week.  I don't post too much, (the guy's in the class understand why) but do read and keep up with things on the FOG.  It was great to see all the Festool guys again, Christian, Brian, Michael (excellent ribs by the way), Shane and Rick.  It's always great to see or even get to talk to Minnie.

The class was interesting, with a great deal more hands on application, student exercises and work then the first End User class in Lebanon (I was at the first class...and they still let me come back again!!!).  I will say this about the Festool guys..They take critique and feedback extremely well and make every effort to improve everthing they do.  Festool is a world class company, but the team in the USA go way past that- they are hospitable and as accommodating as you could ever wish for dudes.  (I didn't want to end a sentence with a preposition!!)

On the way home, passing through Louisville, I picked up an OF-2200 and accessory kit.  It has to be one of the most thoughtfully designed machines ever marketed.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, as my wife says, I'm more of a collector- but I'm sure I'll find some use for it.

A special thanks to my class partner Tim-  He is a great guy and we made a good team- he did all the actual work and I took all the credit.....the universe is as it should be.

I truly enjoyed meeting everyone in the group this time as I did the last time. The diversity of the people and their interests are an added bonus of attending one of these events.  It great to spend a couple of days with people from diffrent places and walks of life that share a common interest.

To everyone in the class I promised PMs, emails and photos to, I won't forget- I'm just slow.

Thanks to everyone involved for making this a great experience.

Dag-nab-it Jay!!!!!  You really did it now. Brian kept saying there was no sales pitch and you go out right away and spent money. He is now going to think he is a real salesman.  Eek!

Gotta chime in - it was a truely great experience!  Not just the class, but the discussions we had outside of class.  Tim, Brice & I had a long one about the new RRP PITA on Tuesday when we "checked in" at Lebanon.  The Festool dust extractors and sanders will be a big help in complying, but RRP will change the way contractors must "secure" the worksite from occupants until the work is completed.

Dittos on Michael's ribs!   Big Grin   From what I understand, Rick C. has some serious competition.  They haven't had mine yet, though...

I learned a lot.  I know what my next router will be (OF2200) and how to better utilize my parallel guides (thanks Brice!!!).  I now almost have enough tools and knowledge to build those kitchen cabinets I promised my wife 15 years ago.

We did see the experimental OF2800 twin-engine router in action.   Eek!  The parts are all available now if you know what to get and how to put them together.  There is a video if someone would post it.  Don't try this at home unless you have enough personel to safely run it.   Scared
