MFT
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:39 AM »

Hi thinking of buying the festool MFT with saw etc, only a bit concerned about the crosscutting capabilities, we produce mainly oak veneered MDF cabinets and I need to accurately cut the board material square, boards are only usually around 600x700mm. Can anyone confirm the accuracy of the squareness using the MFT.

Many thanks

Simon,

First of all, welcome to the FOG!

The MFT is more than capable of producing square panels - there have been a couple of threads on this recently. I'll track down some links & post back, but in the meantime you could try using the search feature to find relevant posts.

JRB

EDIT: Here's the main thread I was thinking of - it's definitely worth reading through, and in particular watching the videos:

Simon,

The MFT/3 can absolutely be used to cut squarely on panels.  The size you mentioned - 700 mm - is about the maximum that can be cut on the table according to Festool literature.

Welcome to the FOG and we look forward to your future visits.

The tools in my truck were talking the other day.  The Dewalts, PC's, Boschs, Makitas were not happy.  They also were in the minority.  Their complaint:  They felt unused and unappreciated since the Festools moved in.  I guess the truth hurts.

700 mm is the maximum cross-cutting capacity of the stock MFT-3 but you can
mount a longer guide rail (1400) across the longer side of the table and increase
cross-cutting capacity to over 1050 mm.
With the long arm of the fence you can get extremely accurate square cuts but
it's easier to adjust in the stock configuration because the outboard fence clamp block
is farther out than if you change around for maximum cross-cutting.

I am beginning to think that is a good option plus, I would be even cooler if I had 2.

Check out this great little jig for guide rails for cutting dead-square parts.

http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-sales-dealer-area/re-guide-rail-speed-square-dedicated-90-for-crosscutting-and-shelf-dad-9288/

I have cut up quite a few jobs with this jig and can attest to it's accuracy.  Just do your rip cuts first (gang rip two sheets of like-width material) , then cross-cut (gang cross-cut similar heights)with this bad-boy and you'll be laughing at how quickly you can cut up a job.  You might not need that second MFT...

If your going shopping and you in the hampshire area, the southern tool fair is coming up next month. I am pretty sure you will get a good deal their - or try toolsave (http://www.toolsave-direct.co.uk/festool/), Dave their is pretty good for deals. I have never (yet) bought any festool stuff without getting something thrown in for free or getting some form of discount - they all want your money...  As with most things, investigate, then CALL don't email - a bit of face to face is the best move.

Let me know if your interested in an edgebander as I might be selling mine soon... Not cheap, but if your doing cabinates... They do the trick !

Paul.
p.s. Put something more specific on your location - you'd get more help from people in your local area. I know I've a few guys near me and we swap tools - it's frowned on, but if you both trust each other and work on the your break it, you pay for it rule, it's fine...

This is a better link for buying...

http://www.toolfair.uk.com/

Have to say, I've not been to this. Equally, not sure how good a deal you will get as some people are tempted into the I can see it, buy it... But it's prob. good to get your hands on lot's of things, then go away and figure out the best prices... Take an iPhone or something with you, you can check web prices and email things whilst you are their to drive a bargin.

Many Thanks For Your Help... Of course !

I did a stint in the Netherlands (1 Year), Dan Haag, doing some work for the Patents Office !!

Very much enjoyed the relaxed caffee's - no, not tourist ones... The ones where you could have a nice coffee, read the paper and watch the world go by !

Our coffe-shops are very relaxing.  Big Grin And semi-legal. But for coffee and a newspaper without tourists you should look for a "bruin caf?", a brown bar, where you can meet the locals, shady types included.

I had an enjoyable time whilst their I have to admit. My best Dutch friend (Chris) shamed me in correcting my english. His sense of humour was the oddest I've met - he learn't his (well, improved it) by watching Black Adder videos. After I got chucked out of a place I rented (and quite rightly so) for having an Animal party - which included straw and animals, he put me up for a few months. We didn't get many early nights and samples most beers and wines...

My other Dutch friend (Jeron Van De Horn - or something similar) we managed to get banned from a local Hilton Hotel (near Baisingstoke) after we held a surprise party in his hotel room - it took 3 days to dry out, our employer at the time (IBM) got the bill, we, of course had to pay it !!

Ah... The joys of computer contracting...

Paul

p.s. I quit computer contracting 5 years ago...

Nooooo.... Don't say you've worked their ?

Yes, Rijswijk !! I used to drive in from where I was staying - where ever that might have been.

This was some 20 years ago however, working on the OS/2 Servers they had in the computer department. They must be Windoze or Linux now.

Do they still have the naked pool parties ? Or have times changed at the Patents office ... If you don't work their, that will certainly give you an incentive to go for an interview !

I have to say, anyone looking into this thread is REALLY going to think we have gone off subject :-)

I had some very funny times. Actually, I think it might be a bit more than 20 years. I'm 43 and I remember getting the ferry back on my 21st birthday.

Hi,
I think you will quickly realise you need two MFTs. I went the same way. Bought TS55 with MFT and later added the second one. Unlike others here I had still some squarness problems. Tuned up the rail and after some time it was slightly off. I had to check the squarness before every batch of cutting. At the end I was so tired I have bought Hammer B3 Winner Comfort saw. Man! Why was I so fool and didn't spend the money into Hammer instead of all that MFT stuff!
If I will be in your position with my current experience I'd buy some Hammer saw (for the stuff you mentioned probably Hammer B3 winner).

I have worked in the data centre in the basement back in 1999 (a large oil company used to use it), and frequently still go past it, although I have never seen any naked pool parties there, that said my dutch collegues are pretty liberal
