Shipping box for Kapex saw
« on: January 04, 2017, 08:20 AM »
I have managed to break my Kapex saw and need to ship it to Festool for repairs, but I disposed of the box and packing foam years ago. Does anyone have advice/recommendations for an appropriate shipping container? My first solution is to build a wood shipping box, but I'm open to suggestions.

I've included a photo showing where the saw blade housing was broken when my work piece got sucked into the saw. My mistake not securing the piece better.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Continuation of the story. I contacted my favorite Festool dealer, Bob Mariano (http://www.bobmarinosbesttools.com/), told him of my woes, and several days later a very large box arrived on my doorstep. Inside was a Kapex shipping box with all the bits and pieces necessary to pack up the saw, plus packing instructions. A short while later one broken saw securely boxed and delivered to UPS for shipping to Festool's facility in Indiana, where it currently waits for repairs.

So thank you everyone for your advice, and to Bob for quickly solving my problem.

You should contact Festool service.  I believe that they have shipping containers for the Kapex.  Worth a try anyway.

Don't know where you got your Kapex, but sounds like your saw may be out of warrantee - if not Festool will send you free all shipping mat'ls, otherwise, if Festool has a charge for these materials, check with Woodcraft, Downers Grove, any of the Bertlands, or Wood World down town.  Gives you an excuse to go look at more goodies.

A wooden shipping box -- I would not want to see the freight charges on that!

If the saw is still under warranty, you have the option of working through a brick and mortar dealer, since they usually take care of the shipping for you.  If no longer under warranty, you might still stop by a dealer, provided there's one you have a good relationship with, and just ask them for some tips.  Who knows -- maybe they'll even have an extra box on hand?

My Kapex is long out of warranty and the repairs would not be covered under warranty. I'm going to contact Festool and see if they can ship me an empty box and packing materials, if they can't I'll buy a plastic shipping container.

Or, if you feel like it and only the outer shell has been damaged: get the parts (they're reasonably priced) and (youtube.com).

If you do get your hands on the Kapex packaging materials, Festool also has videos on repacking:

There is an approach that involves cleaning up after a work session (which includes taking care of the tools used), which might explain the contents of some photos here.

Probably too late to reply, but for future reference..
You can take it to a Festool dealer and they can ship it for you.
We usually keep 2-3 empty Kapex boxes for these situations to help our customers.

End of the story. Festool quickly and inexpensively repaired my Kapex and I was happy to find it on my front porch last week. After setting it up I found that it was as good as new, so I finished the project that I originally damaged the saw with, but this time without doing any harm to the saw or myself.

Thanks, Festool! [big grin]
