cover slieve for CT36 vacuum hose
« on: June 06, 2018, 05:33 PM »
I bought one of the CT36 vacuum units several years back and it comes with I believe a 36mm hose that is 5m long.   Now I have seen a youtube video about putting a PET Expandable Braided Sleeving over the vacuum hose to stop it from catching on your work surface or project when using it connected to your Festools.  I have noticed this is a problem when using my sanders and even the domino.

Now I gather that the hose is 36mm that works out to be just below 1.4".  Now you can easily get a 1" PET for a very low price and it says it can expand to 150% the listed diameter.  So it should theoretically fit.  But I have also read that as you expand the PET sleeve, you reduce the flexibility.   So I am wondering if it would be better to get a 1 1/4" or a 1 1/2" sleeve.  The downside is that those sizes are more than double to cost.

Has anyone used this on their hose and what size sleeve did you use and how does it improve using the hose with your tools.  Does it stop the annoying catching of the hose on your work surface/parts?

I used the 1-3/4" Gorilla sleeve from Techflex that is listed at Toolnut and embedded a plugit cord with my 36mm hose.  It has greatly reduced the flexibility of the hose and I am thinking about removing it.  It did eliminate the snagging however.  I have since learned that there are different grades of PET sleeves that are more flexible.  Perhaps someone will chime in here who has a better product recommendation.

I bought a product on Amazon that I used on my 27mm hose:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075QF7M3D/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The 1.25" worked well for the 27mm hose, I secured the ends with 3M electrical tape.  I have not noticed any issue with flexibility and it does solve the snagging problem.  One of the Amazon reviews is about using it for a Festool hose.  It's pretty inexpensive.

I haven't put the cord inside the sleeve yet,  but plan to soon.

I know that Festool sells 3 different hose sizes.  I am not sure what hose size is standard shipping with the CT36 circa 2013.  I am not sure if the 27mm hose is the inside dia or the outside.  I did take a tape measure and it's 110mm circumference that sort of works out to 35mm outside dia.

I do think that I would need at least a 1 1/4" braided sleeve.  Looking, they sell them in 25' lenghts, and I am sure that I will need less than half that amount.  Guess I have to find someone else in the local area that want's to do the upgrade to their Festool hose to help bring the cost down to a level I can justify.

That looks like a great option to save a few bucks versus buying the more costly Festool Sleeved hose.

Ive done both the 27mm and 36mm hoses and while I cant remember the exact diameters you need I do remember its larger and longer than you think as its dang near impossible to get it all the way on if the sleeve isnt big enough and when it expands in diameter it shortens in length. The sleeving material I had to buy for the 36mm was not cheap, nor was the heat shrink tubing.

I've done a hose for a MIDI and a hose for a CT 22 with the cord running inside the Flexo. Both hoses are significantly stiffer. I used Flexo Pet by Techflex. If using 1" diameter material you'll need at least 18-19 feet of braided sleeving plus some short lengths of 1 1/2" heat shrink. It'll cost about $40 for each hose. I'd probably go with a material that's 1 1/4" diameter as it may give you more flexibility.

While this method is a great way to reduce hose snagging, I've since replaced both hoses with the Festool covered sleeved hose, 201751, for more flexibility.
