MFT trolley made from aluminium extrusion
« on: October 15, 2014, 03:00 AM »
[ Specified attachment is not available ]Hi all,

I know a lot of people have made trolleys and MFT benches.  Mine needed to meet some specifications such as:

1.  Height 920mm max.including folded MFT (180mm) or 740mm trolley alone.
2.  Shelf height of 560mm to accommodate a combination of Systainers in 6 stacks
3.  Fully lockable castors of 60kg each
4.  Width and length to match MFT

So I made a trolley as shown below by using 40x40 aluminium track sourced from http://www.item24.com

It is light, very strong, meets the above specs, and I think it complements the look of the MFT.

Happy to answer any questions and comments appreciated.

I got the extrusions from my local supplier in Australia.  The USA site is http://www.item24us.com .
To rebate the plywood between the extrusions is easy.  Simply get one of their rebate extrusions as shown below
http://catalog.item24us.com/en/product_info.php?info=p60521_Rebate-Profile-8-Al-16-M5--natural.html&cat=1001012508

It wasn't cheap to make - I got the economy extrusions (definitely strong enough for me) but they still cost $23 per metre.  Worked out to about $450 with all the connecting machine bolts and castors.  I then bought the stabilising angles, rebate extrusions, and plastic infill for another $450.  I could have got the small angles for the side and saved $100.  All up you could make one for about $AUS800 or $US700.  Get the extrusions cut to your exact requirements although they are easy to cut on the Kapex with an Al blade.  Buy the cheaper connectors if you won't be changing the joins. You will need to do some tapping M8 and drilling to fit the cheaper connectors.  That's it!  Pretty easy.

Thanks a bunch! ya i was expecting to pay alot for a clean setup displayed on their site. this would open a large ideas for me in the future for kitchen island storage/end tables/ cafe tables. this would be my next project using the festool pull out sys-az because i do not want to use any wood or mdf at all ;D

A lot of the 8020 stuff is available through McMaster-Carr.
It's also the easiest way to find prices.

Thanks for the Sketchup model.  I think I was your first download!

Is there any way we could get a parts list for what you used?

I'm planning on building a similar MFT-style 24x60-inch table with the adjustable levelers so it can also serve as my tablesaw's outfeed support.

Here are the part details

Profile 8 40x40 E  part # 0.0.452.79  6000mm 2 lengths
     cut to 4/1160 mm; 4/560 mm; 6/695mm
Standard-Fastening Set 8, bright zinc-plated, part # 0.0.026.07, x 16
     to connect 4 corners
Caps 5 40 x 40, part no 0.0.370.13, x 8 to cover exposed end of extrusion at each corner
Automatic-Fastening Set 8, bright zinc-plated, part # 0.0.388.08, x 4
to connect central rails top and bottom
Angle bracket set 8 40 x 40 Zn, part # 0.0.411.15, x 16
Castors with single central hole your voice here, I used M8 counter sunk head
     machine screws 25 mm x 4 and T-slot nuts V 8 St M8 part # 0.0.480.48, x 4
Cover profile 8 green colour if you get it part # 0.0.489.44 otherwise can be natural, black, red, yellow, blue, grey - your choice & check part numbers, need 5 lengths @ 2000mm or more if want to cover all exposed slots.   Can also be used in reverse to hold panels 4-5.5mm thick
For plywood rebated shelves 16 mm thick you will need Rebate profile 8 Al M5 part no 0.0.605.21 2000mm, x 4. This can be reversed for a 21.5 mm profile for thicker boards.  Other profiles available for other board thicknesses.

Finally, I used 3/16" counter sunk machine screws and nuts to fix the plywood to the rebate profile.  12-15 per panel x 4 = 48 to 60.

Good luck.

Ugh! The whole thing is specified in Australian!   [scared]

Just kidding.  I've worked with Festool long enough to understand the Metric system better than most folks in the United States.

Thank you so much for the info.  I will be creating my own design with inspiration from yours.

One question - What components are used at the corners of the MFT top.  It appears to be removable from the rest of the trolley.

The MFT just sits on the trolley at this point, I intend to put a corner brackets to stop any movement.  I haven't worked out the exact design yet.  Do you have any ideas?

Hi there
Great idea and I am looking to buy a similar setup to help me clamp boards square to the ends so I can run a dovetail with the router for sliding dovetail panels.

Do the festool clamps fit into this extrusion fine?

All the best

Yes - the Festool clamps fit into the 80/20 1515 (1.5") and 4040 (40mm) profiles.

Cheers mucker!

How much is that p/m (£ if possible)?

Been looking at

 http://www.motedis.co.uk/shop/Slot-profiles/Profile-40-I-Type-slot-8/Profile-40x40L-I-Type-slot-8::999999.html

at the moment and KJN too. Will likely go with whoever is faster as I'm in a bit of a tight spot time wise (own fault as per).

Price does have a factor too though.

That profile is nearly identical to the 80/20 40/40. No idea the cost over there, it runs about $7/foot here, or 15£/meter for you US/Imperial challenged blokes.  [big grin]

Yes - the Festool clamps fit into the 80/20 1515 (1.5") and 4040 (40mm) profiles.

How do you slide the clamp into the slot with the ends of the aluminum profile blocked?

Nice looking trolley! Do the festool clamps fitrouterthe aluminium profiles like they do on the mft?

Hi there
Great idea and I am looking to buy a similar setup to help me clamp boards square to the ends so I can run a dovetail with the router for sliding dovetail panels.

Do the festool clamps fit into this extrusion fine?

You don't.  [big grin]

There are ways to avoid blocking the profile ends using brackets @ corners instead of butt joints. Some folks have also widened a 2-3" portion of the slot so the clamps can be fed in from the center of the extrusion. Here's some info on how I modify corner brackets:

As of 10/17 I am out of the Dog business and pursuing other distractions. Thanks for a fun ride!

Bit the bullet and went for a similar albeit more barebones version of the above.

Was looking at Motedis for a while as they are cheaper but rang KJN to see how quick they could get it to me (which was quicker) and they were so helpful on the phone I went with them. They even emailed me to double check a part I ordered to make sure I was happy to tap the M8 bolts into the ends so happy to have gone with them.

Will be looking at reeming the T slot a little larger as you said to accommodate the clamps as I saw on a video recently some guy did with a gopro.

Will let you know how it goes when the parts arrive on Wednesday. Now just to put the client off for a few more days . . .
