Parf Guide system, how to vid
« on: August 12, 2017, 03:58 AM »
Hi Guys. I finally got hold of one of these and played around with it for a few weeks before I stepped up in front of the cameras.
The video is mostly for a newbie but can also help those who are seasoned. Let me know what you think of it. I am no where near as polished as Peter is, but maybe that is because I only have an old blue T shirt.  [wink]

Good vid.

I liked the tip of putting the hand knobs on the parf dogs to make them easier to insert and remove.

I don't have the guide system but I think I'll use it when I get around to building a new bench.

Hi David

This is excellent - many thanks for doing such a super job. Perhaps you could comment on the finished accuracy of the tops that you have created. Also, could you comment on the fit of the Parf Dogs in the 20 mm holes that you have drilled ?

I just watched your latest shop tour video and am quite envious !

Cheers.

Peter

My pleasure Peter. I will do a 5 cut in the near future but what I can say for the moment is that I have made 2 tops using your guide and I placed one over the other during my live show today and thought it would be a huge test to see if the long parf dogs would be able to push through the pair of tops. Go to 36.40 in the video I have linked. Random position and the first 3 slid in perfectly without slop. The 4th missed by a minute amount but tried it in the neighboring hole and no problem. Why did the 4th dog miss? I am certain that because I was not using a clamp to hold the guide block I may have lent the drill ever so slightly. This of course has no bearing on using the top of each of the panels I created. Congratulations on a great bit of kit!

Dave,

How long did it take to make each of those two tops?

Thanks,
Charles

The full hole pattern on the mdf panel took a bit over an hour Charles. Once you get past your first one it gets quicker and of course, if you only want holes as a docking station, less holes - less time.

I don't know if this has been suggested elsewhere, but if you do a limited pattern of 20mm holes but think you may wish to expand, or in-fill your hole pattern later on - then it might be worth drilling a complete grid of the 3mm holes first off whilst you have the rulers ('Parf sticks') set up.

This is a very good point. I think David did mention this in his video and it has been covered in one of mine as well.

Cheers.
