"Perhaps the bosses would care to explain why it costs $80 for some stickers printed in metric to be swapped ."

I think the only tool that costs $80 to convert back to metric is the circular saw. The reason is, the scale is printed on or in the plastic housing and swapping it requires disassembly of the saw.

Someone can/will print out a metric sticker at some point to apply over the Imperial scale.

This is correct. It's not a sticker. The conversion replaces the housing.

As some people have pointed out, we have offered metric-to-imperial stickers, but we've found that those tend to present more problems than they solve. It's too easy for the application to be off for of for the sticker to move.

I would recommend that discussions about the imperial conversion be continued in the thread devoted to the topic so folks can find all of the info in one place. Thanks.

We're waiting for more information from Festool. Currently, they have asked that all dealers suspend taking orders. I will share more info as soon as I have it.

What a botched deal. They totally miscalculated this thing. Should have done a limited run at all dealers advertised for black friday or something like that. These things were snatched up by thousands in a couple days with very little ad press for exposure to new customers. A complete disaster. Also, really poor communication of what the $50 rebate was going to be too. First couple days we were told "voucher" then a rebate page gets created with absolutely no details. They will most definitely be learning from this. [blink]

Why this offer is not available in Australia is currently being discussed in the Visitor Posts of Festool Australia's FaceBook page. Festool replied -

Currently this machine is a USA 110v machine and is not available in other countries at this time. This machine is not compatible with the AU 240v circuits so can not be used in Australia. Once we have further information we will advise.

So, does this mean that this sander is the first Festool  NAONA model!? [Not Available Outside North America]  [eek]  [smile]

I think that not always getting what you want makes the "catch" that much sweeter. It really is an interesting take on consumerism, the speak easy nature of a find a festool fix.

I was late to the party on a festool reconditioned order and thought I had scored a T18set and MFK700set from Bob Marino, Bob later contacted me to let me know that my order didn't go through. You know what showed up eventually? The T18set and MFK700set, it was a great day.

Must we always get what we want (aside from a new kapex motor)?
helper: i used a festool "circular saw" to do something simple and it made it really hard

me: exactly, it makes simple cuts complicated and complicated cuts simple

IMHO and that's all it is MY OPINION being here 8 years(yahoo days) and using Festools when they were Festo, I disagree with so many comments here.

The sale isn't' botched. I have read over an over about how this was to get market share etc. No it wasn't. DO you think Festool is stupid? They could have made 250,000 of these if they wanted to, it's not their aim and would have done them little had they. How much profit do you think is involved on a 99$ sale like this, ZERO?.

This sale was for people that already use Festool, potentially for a few who are on the fence for the brand. If no one was looking at Festool already or didn't have a Festool supplier or wasn't on this forum they wouldn't  even know about this sale. That's NOT a mistake, that's by design. Again, they are not stupid, they know how to advertise. Festool isn't a new company.

High end niche companies don't market a 99$ items to entice people. Everyone that keeps saying that doesn't understand marketing.

Festool isn't going to try to become the largest tool maker in the country as many here have suggested. IMHO if they tried to it would be a HUGE mistake. They would have to come down to mid level pricing to become the largest. Why would they compete in that area when they own their market? If they wanted to become the largest they would just drop their tools in Home Depot, reduce their prices by 20% to 30%(having to lower the quality as well) and mass produce the heck out the them. No way are they going to dilute their name by doing that. Sell more items at less a profit to deal with far more clients in an area they aren't really experts in? At best they break even, at worst they collapse.

I see this tool more a reward for people in Festool already. The people stating that this  99.99 could of launched them into Festool and "maybe" they would spend more to jump in the brand may not be honest with themselves.  And Festool knows a 99 sander does not draw a person in to then buy 1500.00 miter saws or pieces of MDF on extrusions for 500.00.

No, Festool do as you are doing. Stay in your niche, make higher end tools at a larger profit margin while selling to the LEAST amount of people you can. Because we don't need nor will you make massive money getting into a war with DeWalt, Bosch, Milwaukee and Makita in that price range. I believe Festool knows this.

If Festool was to try to compete in the mid range market as the company is now with the tools they have or even to make a lesser line altogether they dilute the name. They are daft if they did that. Slow growth, stay near high end and have a nice sale every now and again. This has worked for them for years and years, no need to change now.

Sorry @Dovetail65 , but Festool's own rep stated that the sale was intended to attract new customers.  Which, by extension would grow their share of the market.

High end companies make lower priced stuff all the time. Even niche ones.  Look at Hermes and Louis Vuitton.  They sell plenty of $100-$200 items every year when their core business is 5 and 6 figure leather goods.  They aren't doing that for charity or because of vanity, or because they don't understand marketing.    BMW makes, or more likely licenses their name/logo for shirts, warm-ups and even tennis shoes.  And they ain't giving them away for 19.99 along with a coupon for 25% off a new set of tires.

Who suggested festool is trying to become the world's largest tool co.?  I think pretty much everyone will acknowledge that Festool would get its lunch eaten trying to compete against B&D and Bosch.   The returns charged back from the Home Depot alone would likely ruin the U.S. subsidiary alone.

But growing their customer base incrementally though faster than a few at a time in the U.S. isn't far fetched. What are their prospects otherwise ?  Be content to sell the faithful some sandpaper& saw blades every couple of months, along with a kapex motor every two years ???  Or, try to convince 8 more guys this month that a $3000 portable edgebander or clamp is a must have ?

And Festool may not be as savvy as you think.  Lots of companies make poor decisions. Even ones with longer and more storied pasts than Festo.  Remember New Coke ?  How about McRib & McAfrica ?  Think those companies spared expense on hiring the brain trusts that dreamed up ,or management that approved, those gems ???  How about the Edsel - from the co. the arguably created the auto market.

If Festool simply wanted to reward the faithful, an offer only available to current FOGers, or their own database of registered tool owners would have been much easier.  And quieter.  They would have just mailed everyone the $50 voucher, or a toolie, or a hat, or another coupon for a cut rate promo tool to redeem at a dealer.  I think you give them too much altruistic credit . So, that obviously wasn't their intent.......................or they don't know everything about marketing.

No. Festool has asked all dealers to suspect taking orders until further notice. You can subscribe to our newsletter if you'd like to be notified should they allow orders again at some point in the future.

Shane, you are the dude - answering questions after midnight local time (unless you are visiting Hawaii).  Nothing like a high drama promotion to keep you this busy with FOG.  Thanks for your dedication.

I was out of town and not paying attention last week, and finally talked to someone who would put my name on an informal list of people to contact if the promotion was restarted - no guarantees.  I have not one single 5" Festool RO sander.  But not to worry - I have a 6" and two DeWalt 5" RO sanders, so life will go on.

I tend to agree that this was not geared to enlarge the audience.  My guess is that the 125mm consumables may be trailing the 90mm and 150mm, and Festool is simply using the promotion as a loss leader to jump start sales of the 125mm abrasives.  At least personally for me, this had the desired effect.

Hey, I ordered a Pro 5, not a 125. When are they coming out with 5" abrasives? It would seem appropriate considering their push towards Imperial and the name of the new sander  [big grin]

Not so much a botched deal, but most likely hoarding by people from the FOG. The $50 sander and $50 towards another tool was incentive enough for people to buy them when they don't need them and/or buy multiples and then sell of the sander. The systainer is worth $69 and the voucher worth $50 effectively giving away sander for $-19 when it is worth at least $195. Considering they sold 25,000 through the existing channels it is unlikely they gained any new customers and much like those who use the deals/coupons on Groupon if they did they are one-time customers. It is more likely existing users bought multiples and I seriously doubt there are that many Festool users in the US.

To be clear I don't need one and never really considered buying one though the value did tempt me. I expect to see these on eBay as soon as they are delivered. I've been using Festool's products since the very early 2000's and I remember one Fall they ran a rebate program of $25 per tool purchased which was of more value to most, as the buyer could choose a tool or tools they need. I realize they run 10% off programs occasionally, but they are so narrowly focused they tend to be useless for those working in the trade.

For a couple of you non-believers out there...this is post 81 from Festool's own voice on the FOG.

This is a one-off promotion. I wouldn't get used to it.

I'm glad that many of you FOG folks are getting one (or seven  [wink]), but the main idea was to make it easier for people to try Festool for the first time.
