Heads up - HL 850 Bench Unit Discontinued (US)
« on: February 19, 2016, 11:32 AM »
We have a few of them left. If you have an HL 850 or have it on  your wish list, you may want to consider snagging one before they're gone.

@TylerC would need to answer that. No reason was communicated.

Any reason for the move from Festool?

It's been discontinued in all countries, and I believe demand for it was pretty low.

@TylerC Not that you will be able to answer this, but are there plans in the works for a bench unit 2.0?  In the end I was kind of disappointed in mine, though maybe that's because I was expecting a level of precision it wasn't designed for.

I honestly haven't heard about one being in development. Theoretically, it could happen, but there's been no word of it on the US shores that I know of. (And it certainly wouldn't be released here in 2016.)

Well, I'm alright as I have one of these.  However, it seems a strange decision to me - the planer is most useful with the bench unit as you can trim a small piece of wood very accurately.  I certainly use the HL850 with the unit more than without.

I do have a large planer thicknesser, but the HL850 plus bench unit is very useful when fitting on site.

Perhaps Festool have not promoted it properly?

Cheers

So Festool is out of the planer game in the US?

Just out of curiosity, would the angle unit of the 850 work on the EHL65?

Thanks for the heads up. [scared] I had the bench, but just ordered an angle fence which I didn't have. Have had it on my wish list, now ordered. At least down the road, I won't be saying, i should have ordered that.  [smile]

I agree. This is a very useful accessory - in fact I had posted a few videos on it a few years back. I too use mine more with the bench unit than without it. Just so useful for smaller pieces.

Thanks for the heads-up Shane.  The planer and bench unit have been on my radar, it's just that I kept finding another Festool that was a higher priority.  I saw that you were sold out- I went to my local dealer today and they only had their display unit left so I got it.  Now I just need to start saving $$ for the planer (or Vac-Sys, or ...) [mad]  Too many 'priorities'!

In my opinion, it's really too bad they discontinued the 850.  I use mine on many more projects that I ever thought.  I especially have found it useful for making picture frame where I want to taper the fronts.  It is also useful for doing rabbets. It takes only a minute or so to set up, even when i have to dig it out from behind other toys.  To set up my router for rabbeting takes two or three times as long to set up accurately.  Once set up it might take a little longer than with the router to do rabbets; but most of my work is for one shot projects.  I seldom do more than one of anything at a time.

Tinker, the HL 850 itself has not been discontinued to my knowledge. It's just the bench unit that has. The EHL 65 was discontinued a couple of years ago.

Just bought the HL 850 (metric) and OF 2200 (metric) and am wondering if anyone is aware of any of the bench units (485017) still floating about?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!  ; )

A real pain in the , both the SE-HL (850) and the SE-EHL (65) have been discontinued

I managed to snag the SE-EHL from a dealer in the Netherlands.

Its one of those little parts thats REALLY handy!

Ok so i just brought the 850 and found that the bench unit (SE-HL) was discontinued which is a little disappointing as so handy. Despite having a chat and scoring the Festool reps demo cheap I did find another avenue I thought i would share to any interested. You can buy all the parts individually and build one and costs were nearly the same price.

According to http://ekat.festool.com, you can find the schematic under Planing > SE-HL. Here's the parts list, quantities and prices in USD. You can order spare parts directly from Festool USA. Being a discontinued item, they may or may not have all of these.

Thats awesome Shane, thanks for the time. Here in Australia I know they could source all the parts and was slightly higher price than the complete unit. So if all else fails this is a solution

For tools. I don't think accessories fall under the same policy.

But admittedly, they should update the FUSA website for clarity.
