Woodpeckers One-Time Tools
« on: August 15, 2017, 10:06 AM »
These one-time tools have gone well beyond the definition of gadget. It is getting beyond ridiculous on the different measuring devices, but they must sell. The have become the Inspector Gadget of measurement tools.

I humorously read the introductions to the new tools and then wonder how in the world I have managed to live without them.

There is so much specialized stuff out there to scratch every woodworking itch.

I wonder when an un-named manufacturer will come out with their version of this:  http://www.garrettwade.com/historic-odd-job-gp.html

I have one of these and when I pick it up and use it I honestly think about how so many magnificent homes or pieces of furniture were produced with simple measuring tools like this.

Woodpecker shipped their OTT version of the Odd Job in early 2016.

In regard to the latest tool, I am reminded of the Johnny Carson pieces on Dickie the Stick and Rachel the Rope.

To me some (most) of it is gimmick, meaning improvements over existing accessories with 2ce or 3x the cost. I do own some of their stuff, like their straight edge, 1280 square, speed square and 45cm triangle square, bevel square.

I use them for set up and checking square.

But most of the stuff I can do without, considering the cost.

Sometimes their tools just give me a chuckle.

Sometimes their tools drain my wallet.

Either way I'm thankful for WP.  [tongue]

I also have some of the Woodpeckers stuff, but I have never bought a one time tool.

I have bought Bridge City tools when introduced (only a couple) and then when discounted only because they were SO definitely different and would work for me.  AND because I pined over their catalogues decades ago and dreamed about one day being able to get one.  AND because I respect their philosophy.

They deffo need to change the name to OTC .. one time collectables. The vast majority of their stuff is extremely over priced and gimmicky.

I think I'd have more respect for them if the OTT frequency was less and the tools were more useful - they way things are going I don't think it'll be long before we see the OTT "Extended Toothbrush Handle".

Who cares. If that sells, then more power to them.

I have the 18" & 26" squares as well as the parallel guides & story stick OTT. I love the squares, I also have the 1281 and their router lift. To me the company makes some great products, either the OTT or the everyday line. They do stand behind their products and I can say that first hand.
Now some of the OTT I get the emails about I just [emoji848] wonder what on earth I would need that for. I think most are a great ideas, although overpriced for the most part. But if it's something that just doesn't grab my attention right away I just don't buy it.

My opinion

I like them they are absolute quality. I have a few they are 100% better than anything I have Owned before
I have one OTT the framing square. And one on order

I do think they appeal to collector types but doesn't Festool ?

They do some things I'm not interested in so I don't buy them

I've bought many of the one time tools and use most of them often. Use some seldom and a few never.

Of course, the squares get the most use. The big surprise was how much I use the spring loaded straddle squares. The allow marking 3 sides of a board at one time.
