Woodpeckers OneTIME Tool Precision Framing Squares (US)
« on: February 06, 2018, 12:28 AM »
Conventional framing squares may be OK for construction jobs where “square” means in the neighborhood of 90°.  That’s what you can expect from a square that’s punched out by the thousands or molded out of plastic. As most woodworkers know, framing squares simply can’t be trusted in tight tolerance shop work and can be difficult to use.

A Square So Good Its Guaranteed! Woodpeckers new, large-sized Precision Framing Squares offer accuracy that’s so good, it’s guaranteed. How precise? Our squares are machined and quality checked to be dead square within .0085 degrees or better. That amounts to about .001" per foot.

Available in two sizes, imperial or metric scales, with or without a case. Or, go all in and get both sizes in a set to save.

Order deadline March 5th, 2018.

I know it's a lot of money (and even more now since the Woodpeckers price increase), but for me, these squares have proven to be worth their weight in gold.

Both of them, but especially the 26" square, have become an integral part of my carpentry.  Whenever I need to cut a straight square edge with the tracksaw, I use the 26" to set the rail.  For knocking down sheet goods the 26" is the only thing I trust to get me that first perfectly square cross cut.  When doing mid-panel dominoes I will clamp one of the squares to the board and register the machine against it to get perfectly square domino placement for shelving.

Plus, the lifetime guarantee is for real.  Over the Summer I noticed that my 26" had bent slightly and gone out of square.  Sent it in and they sent me a brand new one for free.

One of the best investments I've ever made in a measuring/layout tool.

I have the 12 inch version.  I am hoping they’ll release their 12 and 18 inch triangles again.

Been waiting for these to come around again.

Question - Why would I pay $399.99 to buy both squares in a package as opposed to buying them individually for $229.99 and $159.99 ($389.98 total)?  Does it have something to do with the cases?

@HarveyWildes, those are the prices without the cases. It's +$30 and +$40 for the case for each square.

I bought the 26" during the late 2016 release. Current price is 15% higher. $199 late 2016, $229 early 2018.

Excellent square. Always use it somehow breaking down sheets. One of the few Woodpecker tools that is unique AND highly purposeful.

By case do they mean the mdf cutout? Or is it like a foam padded case?

My original thought was WOW these are really expensive, but judging by the responses it sounds like it's actually worth the cost.

In this instance, the "case" is the MDF with the cutout as shown in the photos.

I bet whoever bought the 26" one on eBay just a week ago is really upset right now:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/WOODPECKER-OneTIME-26-x-16-FRAMING-SQUARE/273031116229?hash=item3f91ec35c5:g:S7EAAOSwbWZaYO7j

Winning bid was $390 + $56 S&H

How often does this OTT come around? I see the utility and value but I just ordered the TSO rail square and don't want to double dip. I understand the WP OTT square is good for so many other things.

The little saddle squares (I have the middle one) and the big carpenter square are the only WP tools I've bought but they both get a lot of use. Now that I also have the TSO big triangle the big WP square stays where it's safe as it's a lot more delicate (structurally) than the triangle.

Ouch that's more expensive than the 18" and 26" set.

This is the 6th generation.  [eek]  It's produced almost on a yearly basis. The first was produced in 2011 then again in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and now in 2018.

Just noticed that I purchased mine in 2012 for $169. They have gone up a bit.

Love the TSO square for cutting sheet goods.  [cool]

As a framing square it looks useless. How do you layout rafters or stairs with that 1/4" step on the one leg? For squaring your track on your mft, which woodpecker seems to include in most of its videos, looks great.

With how thin it is I wouldn't count on it for squaring the MFT by itself

That was my thought. Framing square is a misnomer. This should be called "big expensive square".

I bought the metric versions of both of these squares a couple years back.  I mounted the case on the side of the Kapex cart I build.  I like them both and use them both but find the 600 mm version gets the most use.

These squares along the Paolini pocket rule which was a OTT for like the fifth time a few days back should be AAT (always available tools).

I think with these squares, the Paolini pocket rule and a WP hook rule I am set for WP measuring and marking solutions for a while.

Any thoughts on which one/ones to get?  I plan to get them to square up an MFT and general marking as well as squaring up cabinet boxes.

I'm tempted to buy both but then it would have to be snuck out to the shop before my better half saw the receipt.

I mastered the art of getting all my tool purchases past my wife, when I first started buying Festool.  I even go as far as buying from companies that ship using Fed Ex (or USPS), because they show up in my area early afternoon, as opposed to UPS, who tends to come later in the day, after my wife gets home.

I also take all my shipping boxes to the recycle center before she can spot them, which helps avoid unwanted conversations.  And, as we all know, with Woodpecker, if she does happen to see it, my standard answer is "oh, I ordered that 6 months ago, and it has just now arrived".

Of course, as my final backup explanation, twice a year I get a free pass by simply calling the item a Birthday or Christmas present for my son....

My advice, get them both.  You will never regret it!

I have a dumb question -- how is this OTT square better at laying out sheet goods than the 32" T-square?

A lot of people praise the 26" square, what advantages does it have over, say, a regular WP 12" square? Sure, the OTT tool is longer, but I'm failing at imagining a scenario where extra length would be that much more useful, considering the price difference.

Personally I think you're right.  The T-square is way better for layout.  Being larger, the 26" square just gives you more accurate squaring than the 12" over longer distances.  That's basically it.  How important that is for your work is up to you...

I use the 26" constantly.  You cannot use the tee squares, which i also have for layouts, to check square for your rails.  I cut expensive plastics regularly and need every cut to be dead square.  Having recently purchasing the TSO GRS-16 PE, which is outstanding, I still check that my 48 and 60 inch crosscuts are dead on by suing the square on the cutting side of rail.  I do not judge my cut by the splinter strip but instead square by the aluminum edge.

So do you find that the guide rail square isn't as accurate as using the woodpecker square? Trying to decide about getting the 18" one  and a guide rail square or just skip the guide rail square and get the 26" square to set up the track
