1010 screw hole stripped
« on: July 10, 2015, 07:09 AM »
The threads on one of the two holes where you attach the template guide or the chip catcher got stripped on my 1010.  This happened on my Ridgid Router a number of years ago, so since then I've been very conscious of not overtightening the screws on any router when attaching the sub-base or any other accessory on the bottom.  None of the other base screws on my 1010 have this problem.

I can still use the router, since one of the screws still tightens, and the chip catcher kind of snaps in with a tight fit, but I don't see how I can get around getting the whole base replaced -- or is there a way to re-thread the hole, and without voiding my warranty?

Yes stripped threads can be fixed with a thread insert. They are commonly used by motor mechanics to repair threads in the larger sizes, not sure how small you can get but you will need a special thread cutting and insertion tool to insert the thread insert. These are sold in sets for each size, check with your local nut and bolt suppliers.

Edit:- Helicoil's range is from M2 so you should have no trouble getting what you need.

Just talked with Lester at Festool service and will have to get the base replaced.  Going to initiate the repair once I'm done with this job, where my 1010 is carrying a heavy load.

That's too bad.  Is it covered by the warranty?  If not, did he give you a cost or at least an estimate?

Fortunately it's warrantied, so no additional hit except for time.  This is, however, the second time I will have had to send in the 1010 since I got it in December, both for small issues.  The first was because the microadjust feature on the depth stop rod didn't work.

Just an update.  Sent in for service and it came back to the dealer yesterday fresh, clean and fixed.  They even replaced the screw that had gone missing because it had fallen out of the stripped housing.

That's weird, i had the same problem on my almost new OF1010. Stupid me because i used the CXS to screw in those screws, forgot to set the torque on 1 and stripped it.
I sent mine in and they simply inserted a thread insert, has been working fine since and even better than before because the insert is steel while the base is soft (aluminium?), even though i learned to only use a screwdriver on it, no more power drill.

Yeah -- I learned the hard way a number of years ago when I stripped one of the housings in my Rigid router not to overtorque the subbase screws.    It was registered under the lifetime service agreement, but it took them three months to get the router back to me.  Since then I only use a screwdriver -- even so, however, the 1010 still stripped.
