Title: Kapex dies again
Post by: alice on June 21, 2018, 02:41 PM
Kapex dies again. Getting tired of this second time in 3 years. How do you know if it’s the armature I may fix it myself.

Not too long ago, someone posted an instructions PDF(?) on how to replace the armature. You can search it in the Forum and contact him, if no one can give you the answer if your problem is with the armature.

Curious what you're using the Kapex on? Construction lumber or lighter faire?

Contact Festool.

They know this is a prob with some models issued during certain time frames, they just won't say it out loud.

But if you abused the crap out of it...I'm not sure what may entail.

After all my ranting yesterday I settled down and phoned Festool Canada service. Talked to Dominic in service and pointed out that my motor has a 5 year warranty so I’m still covered. Sending in today. I am still without a saw for a week on a major job with deadlines. Thumbs up to Dominic he is a very patient man dealing with me. Will post again when saw comes back.

About certain kapex saws being bad from certain time frame

Oh....OK

It was at the Festool Roadshow I went to about a month ago.  I was chatting with two Festool reps and was mentioning how there were those threads here on the FOG about how there were Kapex saws burning out, and one of them asks me 'how old is your Kapex?', to which I replied it was over 3 or 4 years old, to which he said I wasn't affected by it.  They were younger ones that were affected apparently.    The conversation veered elsewhere after that.

Simple, if you have the money, they are amazing saws.

I do have to question the Festool reps reply on that one, something smells funny.  If it was only the early saws that had an issue, then when an early saw is repaired why can it still have problems?

There have recently been several members, Alice & Rizzoa13, among others, that have had multiple failures on "REPAIRED" Kapex's. I'm sure the Festool tech's aren't selecting "early" replacement parts when repairing "early" saws.  [sad]

I have no idea based on what I recall of that short conversation.  Sorry.

Ya, I talked with the local Festool rep about 3-4 years ago. This guy was really sharp and actually knew which end of a saw to use. It's too bad he's now a rep for a different product line.  [crying]

At any rate, he told me that Festool corporate was aware of the Kapex problems and "THOUGHT" it was an armature issue.  I replied Festool "THINKS" it's an armature problem and he replied yes, but they aren't sure.

Hmmm...that exchange wasn't too reassuring.    [eek]  That was 3-4 years back.

Y'know, just throwing darts at the wind, considering how the power cord is doing a whole lot of bobbing and weaving; maybe the cord is getting kinked up and at just the right position causes an impedance, voltage or current issue?

I would assume that something Festool would have been able to identify pretty easily.

Well my kapex is back and I would like to thank Festool Canada for their and especially Dominic. They replaced the motor and some other small things and covered everything including shipping both ways.

That 5 year Canadian warranty makes a HUGE difference...that's what we need in the States... [crying] [mad] [crying]

As a Canadian owner of a three-years+-old Kapex, it is a relief to read your feedback. Festool service deserves praises for this excellent service encounter.

As an American owner of a <5 but >3 year old Kapex, it is a kick in the teeth to read your feedback. Festool USA should be ashamed of themselves for their appalling silence on this issue. See what I did there.

If you make millwork for a living, then it is worth it. Everything burns up eventually.

Had I known about the motor issue, I would not have bought it, no matter how amazing it was. I rank reliability #1 consideration when I buy a car, a machine, etc. Having said that, I enjoy the Kapex very much, especially its accuracy and dust collection. I use mainly rough lumber and, as part of stock preparation,  the Kapex is therefore used in almost every project, large and small.

Yeah, my hitachi was acquired used about 25 years ago. Use it daily. I'm going to hate it when it burns up
