Another reason to buy Festool..
« on: June 06, 2015, 04:03 PM »
Hi guys,

So today I made some MDF doors for a client using the OF1400, TS55 & Midi extractor,

Took my around half an hour to get to the stage of the doors being cut to length,

222753-0

I then proceeded to rout out a pattern in the door, 8mm wide by 4mm deep channels, in all 6 doors (these are going to be used at sliding doors for a bedroom wardrobe).
In total it works out at close to 54 linear metres of routing at the size specified. Now usually, routing MDF there will be a huge amount of dust. This is where I thought Festool would help as their extractors are meant to be superior to most on the market.

Well, all I can say is that I am gobsmacked, absolutely stunned.

I expected alot of the dust to be directly taken from the tools via the dust ports, which in itself is a luxury.. But after taking tools to van and having a clear up, There was a pile of MDF dust on the floor.. a pile the size of a grape! I was stunned!

222755-1
222757-2

Hope this helps anyone on the fringes of wanting to purchase their first/add to their collection!

Looking good , nice idea looks just like the oak doors they do in Howdens. Did you just use rails and end stops . I suppose you chiselled the round corners square ?

WelshWood,
I know the tools make the work a bit easier, faster, and more precise, but I have to say that you and many of the other members here are a talented group.  Those doors look great!  Thanks for the inspiration.

That was the idea from the client :) Used rails, no stop ends, just marked lines where to go to. Again, The OF1400 allows plenty of room to see where the cutter is going.
Used a 2" chisel to follow the lines and to cut the corners square.

Shame that I had to join 2 x 1400 rails to rout the long grooves, as the 1400 was only just bigger than the length of groove, but couldn't be used as the router became unbalanced at either end!  [sad]

Nice work, like the way the doors turned out!

Like you I have experienced terrific dust collection with the OF1400.  Only time it was bad the CT bag was full which is clearly my fault and not Festool.

BTW, the doors look great.  I might tdo something similar for a couple doors I need to make for my house.  Thanks for sharing.

I lost a job once because of MDF dust.  Was working in an art gallery and had to build a 50 ft. display platform, and because everything was way behind schedule I decided to flush trim the platform to size.  They had to delay the opening of the show to clean off all the toxic MDF dust which had managed to seep in and cover every single piece of art in the gallery, including things in the back office that weren't even part of the show.  Thank god I'll never have that problem again.

Just a suggestion for future projects  -  try using moisture resistant mdf rather than the shite sold in the sheds. Your customer or whoever is painting it will thank you for it.

Superior dust collection is actually the #1 reason why I buy Festool. However, I've been able to get a really good dust collection with Bosch router with the attachment. To cut wood, my TS is awesome and leave so few dust that it takes literally 15 seconds to gather compared to half an hour when I'm using my table saw.

All tools these days do well in general.
Some do better than others.

Funny I used mine yesterday to put a 45 degree splay on 15 ply panels.
I was being lazy and couldn't be bothered to go get the vac from next door so made the firsf one and thought better of it after being covered in dust, hardly any off the 14 boards loads off the first one
