Just Arrived At My Door - SYS-AZ Drawers 500692
« on: September 11, 2014, 07:29 AM »
I decided to get a couple of these so I could have a closer look at them & do a review. The review will (hopefully) follow in a few days, but in the meantime thought I'd just share a few pictures.

Thanks to FFX for the quick delivery - I ordered them on Monday evening on a 5 day lead time, and they arrived this morning:

Each drawer is packed in a brown cardboard box:

The drawer has the option of fitting a lock:

The latch mechanism is not built in to the runners, it's basically just a plastic flap that engages in an additional plastic piece that fits under the runner on the left hand side. The lock simply stops that tab being lifted:

The runners are good quality, full extension, and finished in dark brown. The drawer simply attaches to the runners with 2 metal tabs on either side:

My initial impressions are that they feel just slightly flimsy, but once installed I can see that being rectified. I'm disappointed that the latching mechanism isn't built in to the runners, it's just a very basic plastic latch. It will stop the drawer coming open when moving a sysport around, but it isn't overly strong. The lock (which I haven't got) seems like it would have limited use - it'd be useful to stop small kids prying, but it wouldn't keep a thief out - it's nowhere near as secure as the locking mechanism on the full metal sysports, but then again I guess that on a plastic drawer it's not going to be.

I like that it has the same card/label holder in the front as the T-locs have, I hadn't noticed that in the pictures.

At the full UK retail of £36.72 inc. VAT per drawer I thing they're a little pricey, but if you shop around you can get £10 off that price which makes them not too bad.

As I said at the beginning I'm planning to do a full review in a few days time, including mounting them into a cabinet. If anyone has any questions about these, or has anything they'd like me to address in the full review, then please let me know here.

So ... what are your thoughts if you dropped an OF2200 systainer from 150mm into the drawer? ... Would it survive? They certainly look less solid in your shots - the press shots were possibly a bit "kind".

Good of you to take the plunge to trial them - I appreciate that. [thumbs up] [big grin]

Why would you want to drop a systainer in from that height? I can try it if you want - I don't have an OF2200 though, but please feel free to send me one. On second thoughts that'd take too long - just order one from a UK dealer & have them ship it to me.  [big grin]

OF2200's in the mail [big grin]

I wouldn't do it on purpose, just thinking of a worst case kinda mishap ... possibly misjudging whee your draw was .. [sad]

A sysport would cope with that, plastic .. I doubt. Wood, you could just repair. (Yeh, you can always just but another drawer too I suppose).

Also interested to see your full review on these.

They do look a lot more flimsy in your pics like you say.

They are sold as a single drawer (500692) or in packs of five (500767). The latter is £173.28 inc. VAT at retail, but again shopping around gives quite a saving over that, with the additional pack saving too. Depending on where you get them from, that makes them around the £23 each price for the packs which isn't *too* bad.

Seems like it would have made more sense to package them in an even number like four or six instead of five.

I suspect it's because the SysPort 1000 is sold with five drawers.

No matter what size the made the package, there would be people who want more, less, an even number, etc. That's why they're available in singles.  [wink]

Five for the multipack is just fine but I need like 25 of the them to even cover my current systainers much less to plan for the future [scared]  [doh]

I wonder are they strong enough to have two sys1-sorts on top on each other on one shelf loaded with screws? Haven't weighed them, but I highly doubt they would be more than 10kg each.
The sky's the limit in my workshop, literally. [big grin]

Are the drawers supplied with the Sys-Port 1000 also sold as singles? (Telescopic drawer
SYS-PORT/TA/2) and if so how much are they?

It's 'cause Festool doesn't like us. Perhaps something dating back to the 1940's?

Gentlemen,

Let's move back into the 2014's please.  It is normal for the US to get new Festool product offerings later than the rest of the world.

They are not available anywhere outside Europe as yet.

I have to ask, if some members cannot move past the 1940s and their disastrous  affect on so many countries (not just the USA) and including Germany, why do you use Festool products?

True - but we don't have to LIKE it. Heck, I'll keep fighting to not even ACCEPT it!!!

But it is one of the main things we have to complain about. If they ever get on a reasonable timely release schedule for the US, it would eliminate half of my posts!!!

[wink] [big grin] [thumbs up]

(In case the humor didn't come through, a more timely release schedule would be a GOOD thing for everyone! As for eliminating half of my posts...well, if those posts are all complaints about NAINA stuff, then I think that would be a good thing, too! Win-Win!)

Bad taste guys ... particularly in the current world climate.

My apologies. That was indeed in poor taste, and certainly qualifies as a political comment which has no place here and which I TRY to avoid becoming involved with. I am genuinely sorry for posting that. Since it's been quoted I can't remove it, but I guess I can once again serve as a bad example...

 [embarassed]

In case it wasn't already obvious, I am not particularly 'politically correct'. I tend to say what I think regardless of whether it is 'popular' or not. I *DO* try not to be offensive, as that serves no purpose.

My frustration over all the NAINA stuff got the best of me and I let my judgement lapse. Although it does sometimes seem that NA is being ignored or put in last place for product releases, I will endeavor to be more sensitive in the future...

but I will still continue to be a very vocal thorn in Festool's side over why so much stuff is NAINA and why it takes so #&*@% long to get here!!!

This is really no different than Apple releasing their latest i<something> in the US market first. Festool is a German company and will release their products in the Vaterland first, then as production catches up with demand release the products in other places. Even though Festool is a global company, they do not have the capacity to scale a new product from nothing to a number high enough to fulfill worldwide demand in a very short period of time.

Remember it is not only production capacity, but also certifications that is required in the various countries. It would be fantastic if a TUV certification was good for the US, but we all know that it is not and Festool now has to get UL certification for the US and whatever other regulatory hurdles they have to jump through.

Personally, I would love to get my hands on the 18V hammer drill, I am so ready to retire the Milwaukee V28 I am currently using.

That's not bad at all, but please, just don't act too much like the boy who can't wait for his christmas presents. As hilld said, it has to do with production capacity and Festool is not big enough to cater to the entire world at once.

Wanna help them? Buy all their stuff, lots of it. And get all your friends to buy it too. Then Festool can expand and add a production facility in the States. They would love to have one.

Despite what you think about the NAINA issue, Festool is dying to conquer the American market, and if I have learned anything the past few years I was here on this forum, is that America gets a VERY preferential treatment from Festool. Prices are kept a lot lower for you compared to the rest of the world, and that fabled service you get from Festool, well, wait until you find out how it is here in Europe. You wouldn't be so pleased anymore. There's no Shane here who responds in milliseconds after you posted on the FOG. Get used to sending 4 emails before you get an answer and still have a 50% chance it's the wrong one.
