Hi Guys,
Just got my new 150/3 from Uncle Bob on Friday and love the sander but was VERY disappointed in the 8 sheets of sample paper. I was so EXPECTING/ HOPING for a nice sample pack like I have heard about that comes with the RO90....Guess the joke was on me. I am new to festool abrasives so I was hoping to get some samples so I could make an informed decision on what to buy. I have read all the forums about what everyone likes but I still would like to have a better idea before I spend several hundred just on abrasives.....OK I am done complaining. LOVE The SANDER

Could be that the contents of the sample pack has changed just or that it is different for the ETS150/3 even compared to the /5.
What types and grits were the ones that you got?

Same when i got my 150/5 ... I grabbed a DTS400 the other day that came with 4 x 10 grits ... but that was a promotion. The RO 90 was the only other Festool sander that came wit anything to date. |

i believe my 150/5 came with four packs of 5 abrasives, rubin 120-180 and brilliant 220-320 that was a year ago.
I saw those like something extra, not really useful but a nice detail.

I just got a 90 the other day and it only came with a sample pack of granat. Total of 5 disk and 1 of each grit. Ended up buying boxes of granat for all the grits I needed. I figured I am set for awhile. The retailer did not have any Rubin.

I received my RO90 from Uncle Bob and it had a lot of sample paper - wide variety. I was really impressed. Don't remember exactly what was in it but was at least 20 items if not more. Maybe Bob added to it. My RO150 and ETS150 that I purchased years ago came with 5 sheets at the most and may have only came with a single sheet. Seems to change over time what is offered.

My recently purchased 150/5 came with a large sample package of paper. It included Rubin 80, 120, and 180 five sheets each grit, and Brilliant in 220 and 320 five sheets each grit. It shows a manufactured date of 5/11, and was purchased a few months ago. I absolutely love it and the RTS 440 I bought at the same time, and will be going back to order a DTS 400 and RS 2 soon. Thanks to Sean all my discretionary income seems to be spent in New York...

I love Festool and have no problem paying for paper but a more complete sample would just make it easier to purchase the right grits for me as we all don't use the same grits or on the same materials. I would like to THANK a fellow FOGer who messaged me with a VERY generous offer to send me a sample pack to try before I purchase. This brotherhood on the FOG is one of the main reasons I switched to Festool. He asked to remain unnamed so I will not name him but I did thank him by email. Two years ago when I picked up 2 - 150/3 They came with about a 2-3 inch stack of many types of paper. It was helpful... Being new to Festool then the hard part was to find out which was which and what they were best at.

Well here is what I got with my ETS 150/3:
1 Brilliant 2 P220
1 Brilliant 2 P320
1 Rubin P80
1 Rubin P120
1 Rubin P180
The RO 90 I bought earlier this year came with a very nice assortment though. Quite happy with that.
It's probably going to hurt Festool because the Mirka 6" I have came with a large sample of Abranet, which means that's mostly what I'll be evaluating on the ETS.

Bought a ETS 150/5 in the middle of Feb. Not a single thing with it. Gotta say I was really disappointed given how confusing Festool's abrasives lineup is.

I just got my 150/3 last weekend and it came with 1 sheet each of Rubin 80, 120, 180 and 1 sheet each of Brilliant2 220, 320 so 5 sheets total.
Not really a big deal. Seems like for my usage (raw wood prep for stain and finish) my choices are Rubin, Brilliant2 and Granat. I'm not happy with the Rubin 180 so I might check Brilliant2 and Granat for anything above 150 but 80 and 120 in Rubin seem OK so far...

Tom Bellemare put together a sample kit for my RO 90 with 10 disks of various grits and I've read on here somewhere he'll put together assortments upon request.
I now have two systainers filled with disks for my 150/3 and my RO 90 and I'm a happy wood grinder!

Jack, I don't think it is about cost for anyone here. I think it is about understanding what the types of paper are best for, testing how the grits cuts so you know what you need to buy. Also add in the RO 90 (that you have) depending on the setting you have the tool set to... those papers cut differently. Just If you only have one sheet.... by your 4th surface testing the three modes.... one sheet might not be feeding back accurate into. Okay I may have over simplified my statements a bit. What I can tell you is when I bought my first two 150/3s .... the dealer (Rockler) carried 2 types of paper in about only 2-3 grits... I was screwdriver-ed to learn from them. If not for the sample pack I wouldn't even have been able to know what I needed to order from Japanwoodworker.com. Jack I think most here do fill a systainer with sandpaper after they get any Festool Sander.... but it is still a question of they type of work you do and knowing what types and grits work for you. The other thing that's been a problem for me is that checking online dealers it's tough to figure out which packs are multi-jetstream and which are regular jet stream in the 6" disc.
Is there some code that I am missing? Even the Festool USA site is confusing on that point...

If it says 9-hole, it's Jetstream. I can't speak for others but my site says Multi-Jetstream in the description. It's been a long time since the switch over.
Keep in mind, Multi-Jetstream only applies to 150 mm (6") disks.

Jim, The transition to Multi-Jetstream took place in December of 2009. I would be surprised if dealers still have inventory of the older abrasives. Everything that's on our website is going to be the most current product, Multi-Jetstream. The other product has been discontinued. Maybe the pics on some of the sites are just wrong. Just a little confusing. Nice to know you can use the 9 hole on the multi-jetstream sanders, I was concerned that using a disk without the inner multi-jetstream holes would be a problem...
