I know it's just a box, but...
« on: April 29, 2017, 11:20 AM »
So, I have no experience with woodworking at all... And I bought into the Festool system almost blindly lead by some pals as well as my buddies at Festoolproducts.com. In any case, I'm doing all of this to build some built-ins for my wife. Before I do that, however, I thought I would start with some simple projects to get my feet wet. I started REALLY simple. Here's my thoughts on some Festool products afterwards:

I'm having a lot of fun...

Hi,

a breath of fresh air, thanks for the excellent video on a cool, and to you very meaningful, project! It was a joy to watch! And - nice box!  [big grin]

I saw the video of your linseed-oil rag mishap the other day and I'm really, really happy for you that the fire didn't catch on/spread. And my hat is off to you for publicly showing the footage, this might save someones life or at least, their investments.

Kind regards,
Oliver

It's really nice to see something as positive as your video. Even with your honest criticisms, it really was nice to hear from someone who obviously enjoys working with wood and using great tools. I hope you have many more years of satisfying woodworking. It is truly one of the best things in life.

Nice video Ryan - I would have thought rounding over the grab holes from the outside would have been more comfortable for fingers than from the inside.  Curious what drove that decision?

I'll echo others - your combustible rag video was an eye opener.  Thanks for the willingness to share your close call and ultimate good fortune.

GJ rocks - keep it up!

It would absolutely be more comfortable. I made that decision with silly aesthetics in mind. I painted the inside and I wanted that sharp line on the outside to give it a modern look:

That is a nice job on both the box and the video.

The only negative was that I had some shed envy while watching it. ;)

Now you gotta imprint your logo on the side to give it that authetic crate visual. A large rocking rubber stamp would deliver an old school look

The only question I have is:  how bad was the fire?

Well done - all parts!

Yeah, you got off super lucky.  Did you play the lottery after that?  That's full $200+ Million Powerball luck.

Wow, thanks for sharing why I use a 3rd party monitored security system including smoke detectors. You'll be finding smoke marks for years, been there.

I have the same... well, it's monitored by me with notifications. Only, they didn't wake me up! Solutions inbound...

As for the smoke stains. I completely cleaned out the shop, repainted, and cleaned everything I own. It was miserable.

Pretty sure that was beginner's luck. Like, I'm so naive as a woodworker that I thought, "Why not?"

More luck...

Thanks for sharing your experience - it's a sobering thought when you see the footage of how much worse it could so easily have been, and you then translate that in your own mind to one's own home or workshop... proves the old saying "You can never be too careful".

As someone about to set up a new workshop, thank you - your timely sharing will encourage me to include safety features I hadn't even considered - even if it is a simple smoke alarm wired back to the house etc!

Not luck, rather a willingness to look at things differently and try something.

Great video Ryan.

We haven't had nice videos like that posted here for quite a while. You make me want to go build a box or two 👏👍
