New sleeved hose - love it! Well done Festool!
« on: April 05, 2018, 08:21 PM »
I picked up one of the new smooth sleeved 27mm hoses to use with my CT26. I’m sensitive to dust, so the more I can contain at the source the happier I am.  It is indeed more flexible, which is welcome.  The ribbed structure is still there but reduced (peak to valley) something like 50% and the outer mesh sleeve is tightly wrapped around the hose so it’s much less likely to catch on things.

Now for some fun.  Anyone want to guess how much (in %) the air velocity at the tool end of the hose increased? The closest without going over wins!  (The admiration of your fellow festoolians)

32-27mm smooth hose
Vs.
27mm hose with right angle connector (the hose from my mini)

I connected a 4” square dust port to bring the velocity in range of the anemometer (made for measuring lower velocity HVAC ducts).

@RKA  Do the hoses have equal length?
My guess is 18.2%.

26%!
@Svar  it’s the standard 3.5m hose in both cases.  I wish I had the 27mm hose that came with my CT26 (with the straight connector) but it’s on loan to a friend for the next few weeks.

I love the new hoses too. I have ordered the third replacement to have them all switched out. The third one is for another brand machine though.

I like the look of the new hoses. I haven’t had much time lately to really look at how they work exactly, but I don’t think I noticed the plug it cord attached. Am I missing something?
But I really like the style of these new hoses

Right the new hoses do not have a cord attached. The sleeve is more an integral part of the hose than the  hoses with a white removable cover. The white covered hoses have a plug it running along as well. The white covered hose is still actually the old type ribbed hose.

When I made my first few cuts in a massive oak kitchen worktop with my TS55 and my PS420 I used an old Miele household vac with its ribbed hose. I was annoyed by the feeling when I dragged the ribs over the edge of the worktop.

Shortly after I bought an used CTM 36 that came without hose and I decided to buy the 27 mm and 36 mm smooth hoses. In Germany you can get the used old hoses for very little money, but the smooth hoses are too new and you won't find used ones. So I had to pay the premium in order to get a smooth one. Never regretted my decission! It feels completely different and much better when you drag the hose over an edge.

I use the small hose for my sanders and the big one on my router and the saws.

I don't know all the offerings but my white sleeved hose has a very small inner diameter and it clogged up too easily. Decided to velcro up a cord to the new smooth hose. Suction is clearly better on the new hoses. I hope Festool comes up with a way to wrap up a cord to the smooth hoses. Most of my on site tools are battery operated so it really does not bother me too much though.

I wonder if anyone has attempted to replace the old style hose, within the white sleeved hose cover, with one of the new style 27mm hoses that just came out?

Would it fit?

Would it be more flexible?

Without the taper, would it increase the suction?

McNally, I believe it would fit. I just picked up the discounted old sleeved hose and had no idea it was actually an even smaller hose 22mm than the 27mm. It was a tight fit but I managed to get the 27mm zipped up with the cord.

After finally using both my new 27mm and 36mm Flexible hoses, I have a few thoughts to add. Love the lightweight nature of both of them.  Doing Wall or Ceiling Sanding is even easier since the hose is much more in 'tune' with you versus fighting you.
Love the Smooth outer surface that doesn't get snagged on things like my older Ribbed AS hoses.

[sad] Still not loving the new style hose connector on the 27mm hose. I agree with others that the physical effort to attach to older tools went way up compared to the old nozzle. Even some Nozzle Attachments are silly tight of a fit to get started with this new nozzle end over all my other Festool Hoses, Ribbed and Sleeved versions.
I may have to go the route I'm reading about with swapping the new nozzle end for an old style one.   [mad]
2nd surprise was the Vac end of the 27mm hose. It still collects dust inside the connector, so you REALLY have to watch it when removing it, esp. with Drywall sanding. In the past , with the older hoses, posters showed how to add a bead of caulk or epoxy to fill the 'pocket' at the rear/bottom of the Vac end of the hoses to prevent the dust from building up so bad. I have to say, it's way worse with the new hose.
I never took the epoxy route on my old hoses, so I probably won't with these either. But I'm tempted.... [smile]
Which means I put the Vac on Manual, and tilt the Vac end of the hose slightly away from the Vac while it's running to extract all the dust building up lurking inside the connector- which is pretty much what I've done in the past with the old hoses..... [embarassed]
I was surprised to see how the issue got worse with the new hoses though, it seems the rear of the connector goes deeper inside to created more of a dust catching 'cup' than before.  Weird... [blink]
Other than that, I'm glad I bought them.
Not as many Sanders as PA Floor guy.....
