T 15 + 3 Drill Set, its the worst drill I ever owned !
« on: February 11, 2016, 08:58 PM »
Contractor here, first let me say I have and use many Festool tool. I love the sanders, dust extractor, kapex, track saw, domino and router. So when my Makita impact driver died after 5 years of great service I figured I would buy the t 15 drill to replace it. I also bought all the attachments to go with it and spent over $850.00. Oh man what a dumb mistake that was.
The locking chuck fails all the time, locking either open/closed or with a bit stuck in it. I tried cleaning it, lubing it and nothing helps. The clutch engages and stops the chuck from spinning. Also, the drill doesn't have enough power to mix paint with a mixer attachment, the clutch kicks in under any pressure.
I sent the drill back too festool for repair and it did no good, same results. So don't be a fool like me and waste your money on their drills. I ended up buying another Makita drill on ebay for $25.00 and it is a work horse. Plenty of power, it mixes paint and is totally reliable.
I'm sending the T15 back again for repair, I plan on sending it back every month until I am satisfied that it functions like a drill should, then I will sell it and try to recoup my lost money on this product.
My advise is "DO NOT BUY" especially guys in the industry.

You need to put it in drill mode to override the clutch. Just used my T12 to mix a bunch of thin set and stir paint a bunch of times in the past couple of weeks. I've driven long Timberlocks with ease.

And no chuck issues at all.

I've had it since it came out about 6-7 years ago.

I have two T-15's, 5-6 years old. Best cordless drills I've ever owned or used. Other brands include Bosch, Mikita, DeWalt, Milwaukee, Panasonic, probably a few others. Anywhere from the old 9 volt Mikita to 24 volt Bosch.

I've  drilled thousands of 1" holes through studs and plates for EMT. It out preforms ever other right angle drill I own except my Hole Hawg.

Yesterday I bored 3-6" holes through 3/4" plywood with a 6" hole saw. Used the drill the balance of the day for other tasks on the same battery.

Mixed taping compound in 5 gallons buckets. Mix paint and grout.

I've driven up to 12" long Timber Locks without pre-drilling, installed art least 1000 Ledger Locks with the T-15.

All the chucks work well for me.

Only brand drill I haven't burnt up in a couple of years. A few other brands, I literally had them start on fire.

Yeah, I actually like mine too. I've gone so far as to get the T18 and CXS also. Best drills I've ever used. Sorry here about your issues with the guns.

T15 is the best drill I ever owned. Doing me a great service for 7 years now.

"clutch kicks in while mixing paint" - well duh, you have to turn it off if you're not screwing, what do you expect?

I really hope I'm wrong, and Mr Kellard will come back to us with an answer, but 1st post, it looks a little suspicious.

Maybe talk to the FOG again, explain each issue and discuss possible solutions. Is it possible you are not using it correctly, and I say that with the greatest respect? If the drill you own is a rare lemon, then talk to Festool again.

If not, and I'm not usually an advocate of deleting threads, in this case it would be justified.

Just my opinion though.

I seem to remember that several years ago, some T 15 drills had a faulty chuck. The chuck would suddenly loosen and the bit could fall out.

Yep, the older chuck was not so good, it was too loose. Been replaced by a locking chuck for some years now. OP talks about his chuck locking up, so it can't be the old one.

OK guys, I'm not a troll or Makita plant so stop with the silly attacks and don't be so defensive. I appreciate the constructive comments and am just ticked with how this drill works for me and that I returned it for repair and it still is disappointing. Last month I sent the drill in for repairs and too Festools credit they did replace an electronic module in the gun and sent me 2 new batteries.Today I'm packing it up to send back to Festool, This time I'm going to send the whole set of attachments and let them figure out whats wrong. Some of you guys mentioned that there was a faulty chuck a few years back. I bought this drill 9/25/14 so hopefully that's the trouble.
Being in the construction business we're all hard on our tools and like I said I love all my other festool products, over $10K worth of them, without any failures. I will let you know of the repair status when I get it back.

Long time since you bought the drill why now?

First post i ever posted on FOG was to complain about the T15.

I bought it on release date.  I hated the chuck still do 7 years on. I refuse to pay £66 for a decent chuck.  Festool should have made a ratchet chuck in the first place.   All other branded drills at the time had better chucks for years so god knows why festool decided to bring out a crap chuck.

However although i did have problems at the start after it wad all sorted i was finally able to enjoy the drill for 7 years.

It has been the best drill i have ever used. This is because of its size to power ratio and the attachtmens esepcially the angle one. It has got me out of alot of hassle many of times.

Nope, faulty chuck was before that, somewhere around the 2007-2010 era. You should have the new chuck, when you tighten it you hear a click in the end.

How about we ease up a bit in this thread.

@Kellard Construction Company  Please report back when the drill is returned. It certainly could be that you have a lemon. Festool is not 100% fault free in that regard.

Also, as a couple others noted ....... when mixing paint was the drill in "drill" mode, which deactivates the clutch? If so and the clutch still kicked in then something is wrong with the drill.

No it doesn't click, sometimes it jams and sounds like the gears are slipping. Has a screeching sound. I tried lubing it and it doesn't help. When I get it back from repair I'll post the outcome, hopefully it will be a positive outcome and I'll be as happy as you guys are with your drills. Thanks for the input !

Welcome to the FOG then Kellard, so glad you are real, especially after the 'dealer pretending to be a user and bigging up their own firm' debacle.

Fingers crossed Festool will come through for you and sort out the problem, I have heard excellent reports of customer service from across the pond.

Best of luck.

Are we talking about a T15 drill driver or the illfaited Ti15 hybred impact driver .

If its a T15 i have had one for years on its still going strong  I have an older C15 with the crappy chuck that is still going strong ,the only time i have managed to get the grinding noise is if i have got the  Ist/2nd gear selecter inbetween the gears.

If you are exspecting impact driver performance out of it , i am sorry but you purchased the wrong thing .

The festool impact driver by all accounts was a lemon

Send it back to festool if you are unhappy , they will fix it

@windmill

Certainly not by "all accounts" and as an impact driver it's absolutely fine. People tended to complain about it's performance as a drill. It's not the strongest in the market and was probably ill conceived as a combo drill/impact offering.

To me the Ti15 is an impact driver that's powerful enough for my needs, that fits nicely in a Systainer, is compatible with Centrotec and shares batteries with my other tools.

I have owned the T12, T18 and C18 as well as currently own and work hard the CXS and PDC. All have worked fantastically and exceeded what I thought they could do, especially the T12. That little guy could do some serious work.

As others have said, hopefully Festool fixes the problem for you.

@Holmz

I see this very differently .. if the post had been asking for help I personally would have a different perspective. It wasn't asking for help .. the first post of a recently joined member was an extremely negative rant about a Festool product that many of us have found to be a reliable high quality tool.

Imagine if you were sitting having a nice cold beer in your favourite little pub and a stranger walked in and said "hey everyone, don't buy the beer here it tastes like dog " and then turned and started shouting it at the people walking by.

More accurately I believe people in the forum question the source of the information when the info is delivered in a pattern we're starting to recognise as a typical negative marketing attack (not saying this is, but the impact is still the same).

So looking at the psychology of this I don't think it's a denial response, I actually think its a defence response.

My life is great, could not find a better one to get.

I use my T-15 in the construction trades everyday. The ROI on my T-15's is more than I could ask. As I said, only cordless drill that has held up for me.

Very Christian of you to attack others for posting their experiences.

I've never smoked a pipe, or anything that might go in one. Quit smoking cigarets about 5 years ago.

If you're in New York how and why did you spend $850 on the T15? Even the set doesn't cost that much. What do you think about the Bosch, Milwaukee, Dewalt or Metabo combo kits? Or have you tried any other brand except Festool and Makita? In my experience Makita hasn't stood up well against Milwaukee. That's just my first hand experience in auto shops and on construction sites. Doesn't mean Milwaukee is better by any meqns, I'm just curious about your experiences. The Festool PDC is far and away the best drill I've ever used and owned. If the T15 is the worst drill ever then maybe give the PDC a shot. I promise it'll be less than the $850 you had to spend on the T15.
