Carvex 420 won't take S75/4 blade
« on: June 18, 2017, 12:38 AM »
I was cutting some 8/4 hardwood today and when it came time to do the rip portion, I wanted to change to a more aggressive blade --> S75/4 FSG. I've alway had trouble using this particular blade in my carvex and for the longest time I thought the problem was on my end but after near fifteen minutes trying to get the shank to lock into the carvex, I ended up going to the previous blade.
Is the S75/4 FSG not compatible with the Carvex 420 EBQ (maybe I missed it in the specs?) or is it something potentially wrong with my Carvex or the blade itself. I tried other festool blades as well as a bunch of bosch blades and they don't have problems locking into the collet. The main difference I see between the other blades and the S75/4 is that the '75 blade is 1.76mm thick while the other blade that works is 1.49mm thick. The "T" portion of the '75 blade is also a smidge wider (I have no way to measure).
I appreciate any insights or if I should send my tool in for warranty. Thanks.

All T shank should fit. I would call Festool service on Monday.

It should fit no problem.  Have you tried to insert multiple versions of the S75/4, just to check whether the one you initially tested might be defective?

I have the same problem, although my blades will fit after fiddling for a minute or so. Pretty annoying though, so I will probably send it to Festool for repair. I don't think it was like this in the beginning, so something may have happened during use.

There are older blades with "Trion" written on them. They are slightly too thick to work with the Carvex but these blades have been discontinued for a long time. All other blades should fit.

Really? That's not been my experience at all. Maybe I just got lucky, but I've never had a problem.

Garry,

I think that it wasn't across the board that ALL of the Trion-marked blades wouldn't work, but some were problematic. That's why those blades were replaced with the newer ones marked Carvex.

Thanks. Mine says carvex so no luck for me.

Did you try others of the same blade model? Maybe it is that particular S 75/4 FSG. Maybe the blade is defective?

Mine works fine, maybe it's just that particular blade. Try a different 75/4 FSG blade.

A quick touch with a belt sander or grinder (dremel) will make it fit.

I had many many issues with my new carvex about a month ago, most of which I detailed in my thread about it

http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-tools-accessories/carvex-psb-420-ebq-reviewthoughts-(not-impressed)/

Extreme difficulty inserting the thicker gold blades was one of the issues. I had one get stuck in there and spent a long time with pliers trying to get it out. Called festool and had to leave a message (during business hours) and NEVER received a call back.

I ended up not being able to use any of the thick (yes, specifically carvex) blades in a job that I specifically bought the tool for. I'm pretty sure my saw was defective, if in no other way than the blade insertion/release mechanism machining tolerances because I returned it and got another one (barrel grip, from the stupid d-handle one) and it does *not yet* seem to have this issue, though I haven't gotten to play with it at all yet except for sticking blades in and out of it.

Long story short, you're not alone...

Festool service took care of the problem, something about the collet nut being too tight preventing the thicker **ahem** festool **ahem** blade from seating. All is well now  [smile].
