Centrotec Installer set
« on: April 05, 2017, 04:44 PM »
So, I know there are a couple of threads on this but it's been a while since anyone wrote anything on this. Since I just got a CXS and don't have any centrotec stuff was thinking of whether this was a better route than getting individual things over time. I know it's a bit of an extravagance. But it's been discontinued and pretty much impossible to find, but I can get one from a dealer that only has one remaining in stock so have to pull the trigger quickly if I want one.  Any thoughts on the 89 item kit and it's usefulness appreciated.

If it's at a good price, as an offer with 20% or more off, I'd go for it.
Otherwise I think getting parts over time gives you a better chance to align to your needs. Also be sure that you can actually find use in the parts from the installers kit. I've seen different versions of the kit for different use cases.

I bought the kit a couple of months ago. It is attached to my CSX Systainer. I use it all the time for projects. If it is not a financial hardship go for it. Put in whatever other bits and tools you may need and move forward.

I wished i got it, I ended up buying all the useful pieces one by one costing me more in the long run. the countersink and drill bits + systainer alone is the price of the kit bought seperately.
When youre feeling depressed just treat yourself to a systainer even if its a mini systainer its ok.

I got one from the UK before they were offered here. Sure there's parts i will probably never use, but I like the organization and have used it a lot with my CXS's. I added the Snappy self centering bit set too, and tossed in some other odds and ends in there.

Thanks for all the input. Price is 299.  Not sure what the original price is because I've seen some sites have it at 425.   But there was no discount offered.

I purchased one and installed an attic cover on it so that it can also hold miscellaneous drill/driver items. It's real convenient...everything in one spot. I've not used all the items but time will tell.  [big grin]

I just recently picked up an installers kit and I would recommend it. I paid $299. The dealer still has some but I noticed that right after I ordered mine the price on the web was raised from $299 to $399.

@woodvkk

I purchased mine the same day I picked up the C18 drill.  It compliments the drill nicely, and I have needed it's components on a regular basis.  My thinking at the time was since I am investing this much in a Festool drill, and the Festool drill utilizes the Centrotec system, I should consider it an accessory, so I purchased it.

I did not realize until your post that they are that hard to find, but after a search on the internet, I realized they are.  I would get it.

As for the price, I paid $299 just over a year ago.  I suspect those who were selling it for more than that, raised the price after they became scarce.

I found one a few weeks ago and grabbed it - it is actually my second one as I bought the version that was out a couple of years ago. I really like the Festool bits and think it is a good value. If you find one, I would get it...

It's a lid with additional storage accessed from the top of the systainer, it's like a frosted clear plastic window. They can be handy.

I've had the Centrotec set since it last came over to the states and I honestly can't imagine having a Festool drill without it. It's so nice to have all the stuff in one spot with so much choice. My biggest problem is the the drill bits are so nice sometimes I don't want to use them for some of the rougher work I do so I keep some crappy ones in there too. I have the CXS and recently the T18 and I have one of the most complete and potent drill combos money can buy. A lot of money... [wink]

I'd say grab it you won't regret it.

Not even realizing they were hard to find I grabbed a kit when I purchased my TXS on a whim. The bits are all quality and useful, my gripe is how much totally wasted space there is inside the systainer. The way the bottom tray is molded with 1/2 at full height makes it impossible to even use a lot of the cubic CM inside.

Anyone come up with a solution to this? I am thinking about cnc'ing some foam to replace the trays entirely.

Thanks,

RMW

Yeah, with the quick little flurry of orders we've received, I know that's more than we had in stock. And, I learned than one of them was damaged when inspected in the warehouse.

Not to worry, we get regular shipments from Festool and we already have more on order.

Thanks for the orders, all.

Edit - Adding a couple of photos we took so you can see what you're getting. The handle will need to be swapped from your original lid.

@#Tee, it shows the green latch that holds the clear door on the attic closed.

Circled in red below.

Edit - one of the photos is with that clear door open, so the latch is almost out of view. It does not come with an additional T-LOC knob, you just use the one that came with your Systainer.

There should be one in the kit, also, if you order any of the other countersink bits separately, they also come with an Allen key.

So is this the only bit holder available, and you just remove the inserts depending on the length of bits?

It looks like the Countersink pilot bit is 3.5mm? The part number 446108 doesn't pull up anything on google so it's not one of the bits currently sold separately.

No Allen key in box, but I luckily happen to have one that works.   Not sure if I'll order the 4.5 mm one or not yet.

I'm on a slippery slope and ended up also ordering the centrotec slot bits, Hook drive bit, and the stubby metric brad point bit set to add to the set to make a more complete centrotec set.  [wink]

With the attic cover and bit holders, makes for a nice overall kit!

That is a nice kit, split point bits instead of brad point, plus you get all the other stuff @justaguy noted. £245.80 works out to $300, and my experience with their shipping to the US has been very good. And the layout fixes my earlier gripe, i.e. all the wasted space in the US kit.

Wish I hadn't already bought the US installers kit.

This is close to the same version offered in the US about 4 years ago - except it was brads instead of split-points. This one has the old style driver bits. I have both sets so I can keep one with each drill. I wish that these would be more of a standard offering, though or allow you to buy the individual components in imperial.

I ordered from them last Wednesday. They shipped the next day, providing a UPS tracking number.  Scheduled by UPS to be delivered tomorrow.

They appear to have a large assortment of Festool items listed on their website. This is a quote from their website: "Fisheries Supply is a premier distributor of Festool portable power tools. Each Festool product works together to make each one function more efficiently, effectively, and accurately. View our full line of Festool air and electric power tools, engine room and utility lights, and more!"

Don't know if they're an Authorized Festool Dealer or not, but they appear to be from the offerings on their website. Edit, Just looked the Festool USA website and they're listed there as a dealer.

(I read a few reviews of the company prior to ordering and saw a few negative reviews, but they all dealt with customer service by individuals at the physical location of the company. Common thread was not being assisted by employees.)

I've had nothing but excellent service from them so far. I'll post anything of note after I receive the shipment if anything appears
noteworthy, or amiss.

@thudchkr
This is the company I was able to find the older metric version of the 1400 router, just last week.  The router shipped fast and arrived in good condition, however the serial number on the router did not match the one on the Systainer,  so not sure what to make of the problem, I sent a message to Tyler and he advised me to use the machine number for registration, since that is the one I would need for warranty work.

I don't consider it a big deal, and can't think of a nefarious explanation for why it happened, so I will just live with it and move on.

Could be anything.

Example; shop has two on display, one below a table, one on a shelf. Then when you ordered it, they picked one of those two and put it in one of the spare systainers... except they picked the wrong systainer.

@Coen

That is what I was thinking, but they only had one metric in stock, and no Imperial (basically, this was their last one in stock).  I'm thinking it happened sometime in the past, as you suggested.  Does not change anything for me.  I suspect a conversation will be required should I ever decide to sell the router, which is why I sent a message to Tyler right away to document what happen.

Received my centrotec set from fisheries supply today. Everything looks great, packed well, and took less than a week from order date to get here.  No expedited shipping either. Wouldn't hesitate to order from then again

Ditto Shane...thanks for the heads-up. My order said 5-7 day wait.

Shane

Any ideas on availability. I ordered on 4/6 and got the 5-7 days notice. I see they are still listed as out of stock on the web page.
Just anxious to get it.
Thanks

@UncleJoe and everyone else who ordered the attic lid...

Our website does indeed state 5-7 days for out of stock items. That's because we get regular shipments from Festool and that's the typical time frame to get an item in stock. We had placed an order for more of them on or around 4/6, when I started posting about them. We were just notified over the weekend by Festool that they do not have any of the lids in stock unfortunately. The ETA given was mid-to-late May to get them in stock, presumably they have to be shipped from Germany.

We will be sending an email to customers who ordered to let them know about the unexpected delay. Apologies for the inaccurate information on delivery, but at the time there was no indication that they were not in stock given when I was inquiring about them.

Hi guys
I've been keeping up with this thread and I've found it pretty informative.  May I ask this, if you changed the lid to an attic lid do the parts inside stay put?  And will the Attic lid interfer with the contents of the kit?
I believe I have a line on an installers kit (older version) and I would be interested in changing the lid if it improves storage capacity

I also like the idea of changing the lid on my Triton Jig Saw.  That would be an enormous help providing it doesn't interfere with the saw and the power cord.

Thank you all

I made his mod to my installers set.  I can confirm that the attic lid keeps the contents of the installers kit in place just like the regular lid.

I tried the link and it shows the Installers Kit is unavailable.  I thought I had one lined up a few weeks ago but it was not the case from someone here on FOG.  I would prefer the older style ones over the newer style ones but I might not get one at all.  The prices I see posted here are all over the place.  The one I had lined up was very nice and it went for $199.00 plus shipping.  I thought  I had it but there was a mix up.  I see $299.00, $399.99, $425.00  That is a bit crazy.

I believe the original kit was $425 five or six years ago.

The latest kit was $299.

Like anything else that was in short supply and is no longer available - you should expect to pay a premium for now if you want it.   :(

With a bit of investigation I've found that there were 98 pc. sets correct?   And the newer ones are 89 Pc. sets correct?   And I understand there was also another set but I've not found what the difference is.  I would like the 98 Pc set.

I'm considering buying from Axminster in the UK.  I like the set they offer.  I contacted them to see what the price would be with shipping.   As someone said,  the price is about $300.00 plus shipping,  that's a far cry from $425.00 and it is the 98 pc set.  Yes, it is the metric version but I don't see that really as a negative.

I did read a post on this thread that one of the posters has both the old and the new.  Would it be possible to post a few pictures to see the difference between the two?  I would hope it would be more than just 10 more driver bits?

thank you for all the information all of you.

I contacted Axminster and their reply was that they are not allowed to ship to the US under their agreement with FESTOOL.   I know I've talked with a few of you who have ordered from Axminster recently.   What gives with the reply they're not allowed under agreement with FESTOOL?????

I was hoping to purchase the Installers Kit they offer the 98 pc set.  It was the same price as the 89 pc set that sells here when you can find one.

I'm confused why I got this email when I know they ship here

I just tried the German Amazon, they have the set but again in red prints stated.  No shipping to the US.
Any suggestions

Thanks guys

Whats wrong going on to a Festool owned site and telling others how to skirt Festools fixed pricing by ordering from Europe.  Seriously guys.  Your ruining it for everyone else. Just like @antss said, email each other and don't post it to a Festool owned site!.

@ Klaus  I did a comparison for a few items and conclusions can be made by anyone:

A Domino 500 Q Set has a US list price of $ 990. In Germany it is € 998 (equals $ 1088).
A MIDI costs $ 560 in the US, in Germany it is € 480 ($ 524).
A TS 55 REBQ Basic costs $ 465. In Germany: € 582 ($ 635).

Mind you that these are list prices. With some shopping around 15% off is feasible in Europe -- never more, though.

Wish they'd listen to (and fix) the complaints about Kapex, the guide rail deflector, the metric system, keeping the non cleantec hose fittings, and their website.

Guess they can't be bothered because they're too busy worrying about losing sales.  [wink]

Well, I'm glad I ordered my metric Zobo set on the 12th and received it. I did not want to spend the additional 90$ just to have it in a mini systainer. It's a shame this choice is now closed to us.

The German price includes 19% VAT, so €998 is actually €839 excluding VAT. Which is $915
Meaning the price differences are really, really small.

Now compare prices of Maglite, Canon photo paper, Lenovo Thinkpad laptops; it's all way, way, way more expensive over here and US sellers are often also prohibited from shipping to us. So I got my Maglites off eBay (there used to fit two D Maglites in the importtax-free range), the photo printer (43 lbs) with photo paper... shipped from the US by another eBay'er. My Thinkpad? From a German with a Chinese name... off eBay. Laptop was originally sold in the US.

The incan bulbs for the 'tuned' Maglites? From a guy on a US forum.

There are plenty of nice Europeans willing to ship something the other way if you ask them  [wink]

That's info that I've never thought of. Why is there such a wide range of prices when looking at sites from the Netherlands to Germany to the U.K.   In my search I've found wide dispersion of pricing for one tool.  Is it not fixed pricing in Europe.   I'm a bit shy to ask any questions in light of the recent change in policy.  I find the U.K. Seems less expensive than the Netherlands or Germany.   Maybe we need a dark web to have these discussions

Personally I was not trying to save a few dollars by trying to buy from Axminster.  I was just trying to obtain a Festool product that is no longer available in the US.  Just like the MFS series of router templates.   They're no longer available here.

Be it that Axminster has what seems to be a fair price on the Installers Kit.   Now curiosity has gotten me here.  I've traveled to Europe 4 or 5 times and will be visiting Italy in a few months.   I sort of remember about the VAT but never really worried much.  I guess because I've never bought anything of a large amount of money that I had to claim.  Clothes and such smaller pocket items.  How does it work when your (new cousin ships you a gift straight to the US)?   Does VAT still apply?

6-mm is a bit smaller than 1/4". So it goes in, but there is a bit-o-slop.
Obviously the 1/4" do not go into a 6-mm. So your 1/4" bits will not fit in a Festool driver.

The general bits are nothing special, and a lot more is available in 1/4".
So you pr Bosch maybe be better for general bits.

The Zobos, and the brad point jobs are nice... Whether that is worth it I am not sure.
In any case I got one and I use it... but with a 1/4" drill and holder, so similar to what you are starting with.

There is actually quite a few available if you search hard enough.  From what I've found with all my searching lately for a 98 pc set I've found some.   Check your local Woodcraft stores.  I was given a tip from one of the guys here to search a few WOODCRAFT's.

I visited the Pittsburgh store yesterday because they were holding a 89 pc set for me.  I decided against it. I still want the 98 pc kit.   Pittsburgh store has at least two sets.   Rockville MD has I believe 3 kits.  I can't remember where I found the others but. Check Woodcraft

Hope this helps

I sent you a PM
