If you have questions about the Domino XL, ask them here. The Domino XL will be available the U.S. and Canada on June 2012.

Domino XL (574422)
Includes: Domino DF 700, 12 mm Cutter, Support Bracket, Plug-it Cord, Asst. 12 mm Domino Tenons, Wrench, Systainer 5
$1,200 USD

Domino XL Set (574447)
Includes: Domino DF 700, 12 mm Cutter, Support Bracket, Trim Stop, Cross Stop, Plug-it Cord, Asst. 12 mm Domino Tenons, Wrench, Systainer 5
$1,250 USD

Comprehensive information will be available online in the coming days.

Q: Are the cross stop and trim stop cross-compatiable with the 500? Ie, can I use my existing ones (from the 500) on the 700?

A: The trim stop and hand rail fence will work fine between the two machines. The cross stop has been recently modified  (now product number 498590) to work with both machines and is reversible, one side for the DF 500 and one side for the XL.

Q: What's included in the two tenon assortments?

A: Due to the size of the tenons, there are two separate tenon assortments, one containing 8/10mm tenons (498204, $275 USD) and one containing 12/14mm tenons (498205, $250 USD). The 8/10mm assortment includes: 8x22x50 (49 pieces), 8x22x80 (38 pieces), 8x22x100 (36 pieces), 10x24x50 (82 pieces), 10x24x80 (52 pieces), 10x24x100 (53 pieces), plus 2 Domino XL Cutters, sizes 8 mm and 10 mm. The 12/14mm assortment includes: 12x26x100 (41 pieces), 12x26x140 (40 pieces), 14x28x100 (16 pieces), 14x28x140 (32 pieces), plus 1 Domino XL Cutter, size 14 mm.

Q: Are Sipo tenons available?

A: Yes, but only as tenon stock in 750mm cut-to-length sticks. They will not be available as pre-cut tenons. The beech will also be available as tenon stock in 750mm lengths. Quantity of sticks varies depending on the tenon stock size (8/10/12/14).

Q: Can tenons be stored in the Domino XL Systainer?

A: Yes, unlike the DF 500, the SYS 5 for the Domino XL has two tenon storage bins that are stackable and removable. These are the same bins used in the tenon assortments, so you can easily move the tenons from your tenon assortment systainer to your Domino XL systainer for transport to the jobsite. The bins have adjustable dividers to allow them to be sized to fit the various tenon lengths.

What's the largest tenon for the Domino XL?

A: 140mm, which is about 5-1/2" in length.

Do I cut the 750mm tenon stock to the exact length of the mortise depth?

A: No. If you measure the pre-cut tenons, you will find they are slightly undersized to allow for a glue pocket. When cutting the 750mm tenon stock, cut it 2-3mm shorter than the plunge depth setting for the mortise. So, for a 140mm mortise you would cut your tenon to about 137mm. It doesn't have to be exact, just slightly undersized.

Q: What are the available mortise depths?

A: 15-70 mm in 5 mm increments (19/32" to 2-3/4").

Q: How much does the Domino XL weigh?

A: 11.4 lbs. The Domino XL has an extended handle on the fence that provides more leverage than the smaller handle on the DF 500. Also, the handle is located all the way at the rear of the machine and in the center to provide balance and to keep the plunge motion inline with the material and cutter.

Q: What's the thickness of material I can use with the Domino XL?

A: I wouldn't recommend using it on material thinner than 3/4" to 1". We generally recommend that the tenon is about 1/3 the thickness of the material. You can use the Domino XL with very thick slabs or timbers by using multiple tenons for additional strength as needed.

Q: Can I use the cutters interchangeably between the Domino XL and DF 500?

A: No. The cutters are different different in size between the two machines and do not share a common spindle size.

The first question is what is included in the set?

The price looks good & I just may have won the "price guess pool"...  Big Grin  On second thought, I may have gone over?

Ron, it's pretty much the same as the Domino DF 500, the set includes the Domino XL, 12mm cutter, an assortment of 12mm tenons, trim stop and cross stop. The non-set is the same but excludes the trim and cross stops.

Well, my guess was $1225 - I should have known better and rounded it off to $1200!  Close but, no cigar Big Grin

Wait, I think I did nail this if you consider that the average costs is $1225!

"Domino XL (574422)
Includes: Domino DF 700, 12 mm Cutter, Support Bracket, Plug-it Cord, Asst. 12 mm Domino Tenons, Wrench, Systainer 5
$1,200 USD

Domino XL Set (574447)
Includes: Domino DF 700, 12 mm Cutter, Support Bracket, Trim Stop, Cross Stop, Plug-it Cord, Asst. 12 mm Domino Tenons, Wrench, Systainer 5
$1,250 USD"

The average costs between the 574422 and 574447 is $1225!

OK Shane, What did I win? Big Grin

Shane, is there a way of identifying which cross stops we have? I bought my Domino a few years ago and am assuming its cross stops are incompatible with the XL. Also, is there a way of modifying them ourselves to make them compatible?

Is the realease date in Canada the same, and what will the pricing be?

$1,390 CDN for the Domino XL
$1,440 CDN for the Domino XL Set

The introductions are the same date in both countries, June 1st.

Shane, is there a way of identifying which cross stops we have? I bought my Domino a few years ago and am assuming its cross stops are incompatible with the XL. Also, is there a way of modifying them ourselves to make them compatible?

Richard, the new cross stop has only recently become available. In fact, I'm not even sure if we've made them available to dealers yet. Nor do I know off the top of my head when or if the cross stop included with the DF 500 has been updated yet.

I've only looked at the new cross stop once and it's been a couple of months ago. As I recall, it's marked on both sides and has indications which side is for which tool.

Thanks for the pricing Shane!

In regards to the older cross stop of the 500 to being used on the new XL model, I think I did read somewhere, they do not work.  But the new one that comes with the XL or bought seperately today (or shortly) will work on both models as Shane pointed out.

I'm so excited!  I was just working on some decking plans last night and was hesitant to commit to drawings involving the Domino tenons being used for my permit not knowing if the XL would be out at the beginning of summer, or the end.  Now I know!  Just hope there's no last minute changes like we saw with the Carvex.  Scared

New Domino, a new focus .. Why could not you put them, even adding to the price .. ?

Rembo,

I'm confident that Germany will, if they haven't already, include the new style stop with DF 500 sets. I'm not where I can check our inventory currently to see if they have the new style cross stop included or not.

Rembo's photo shows the difference in the cross stop to allow it to work with the DF 500 and XL. Due to differences in the height of the center of the cutter from the base, you flip the pins one way for the DF 500 or the other for the XL.

I guess in retrospect, if you have the cross stop already, it should work on the Domino XL, but only for indexing from the edge of the material, not from the adjacent mortise since the pin would not be at the right height to fit into it.

I just looked at some of my 574432's and compared the cross stops to the 498590's - they look identical to my eyes!

Peter, look at the part that slides. The pin is offset from top to bottom and it can be removed from the cross stops and flipped over. There are markings showing which side is for which Domino model.

Thanks for checking on that and reporting back, Peter. I'm not sure when that transition to the new cross stop being included with the DF 500 took place, but I'd guess at least several months since the XL has been in Europe for a while now.

Shane, what are the actual dimensions of the new tenons (thickness and width)?  I'm looking for tenons that fit my 500 at their widest settings for the 8 and 10 mm.

Rob, the width is the same. Here are the 8 & 10 mm tenon sizes for the XL.

8 x 22 x 80 mm
8 x 22 x 100 mm
10 x 24 x 80 mm
10 x 24 x 100 mm

Here are the measurements for the DF 500.

8 x 22 x 40 mm
8 x 22 x 50 mm
10 x 24 x 50 mm

You could always rip two tenons down to half the width of the mortise and then Domino them together with a 4mm tenon. Big Grin

Yes there will be two different systainer sets - one with 8mm & 10mm and another with 12mm & 14mm. Extra bits will also be available.

Unfortunately not back as far as September when I bought my DF 500. But it's a pretty minor cost difference to get the set again when the time comes.

I really like the compartments for dominoes in the systainer.

While not a 700 question per se, but when does Festool plan to replace the tenon systainer design for the 500 with the removable trays?  Will the trays be available on or around June for us to make our own?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin, the new style tenon assortment systainer is already available to dealers, empty (498889) and with tenons (498899). Does that answer the questions? Not sure I understand the second part about trays to make your own.

Edit: To be clear, that's for the DF 500, not the XL.

Thanks Shane.  Second part was to see if the trays or bins would be available separately similar to the sys1 boxes. At $85 for the t-loc, lid foam, and trays it makes more sense to just buy the whole deal.  I could see some extras coming in handy though.

Thanks again,

Kevin
