Infinity Throat Plate for Kapex w/replaceable inserts
« on: January 04, 2015, 09:56 AM »
Just saw this:

http://www.infinitytools.com/Festool-Kapex-KS-120-Aluminum-Miter-Saw-ZCI/productinfo/100%2D350/

More expensive than the betterly, but the replaceable inserts could make this cost effective if you use multiple blades or bevel angles.

Looks like the same idea as the Sawstop ZCI, but can't tell if it is made by the same guys.

Seems like a good deal, if you're considering multiple inserts, like one for 0/90*, one for 45 left, 45 right, 22.5 left, 22.5 right. I typically mitre instead of beveling whenever possible, but you get 3 inserts and one "base" for the price of two betterly bases, and its a quick switch!

The throat plate moves along with the blade so I don't think you need a new plate for various miter angles.  However, the bevel origin is not in the same plane as the plate, so every bevel angle would require a new plate, as well as each new blade.

I haven't made the jump to the Kapex yet (one of the remaining Festool goodies I still need) but I  have the same product from the same company for my yellow / black 12" sliding compound miter saw. They've had the non-sliding version around for a little while, but the longer unit for the sliding units is relatively new to the lineup. It's a nicely made product with the frame being made of machined aluminum and the "removable inserts" being made of 1/4" ply. The insert slides into the frame and is held in place by way of 45 degree bevels into a dovetail slot.

I also ordered some extra inserts but realized after that I can easily make them myself from spare scrap laying around the shop. Overall I give it a thumbs up and I'm sure it will be the same for the Kapex. Keep in mind you'll still need a sacrificial fence to eliminate rear tearout, but it greatly helped my cuts in that the original throat plate that came on my saw was pretty flimsy plastic. Hope this helps.

Throat plate has been installed for a week. Much nicer than the factory plastic!

My Kapex has been the most dangerous tool in my shop so time to upgrade to these zero clearance upgrades. Wondered how the Infinity upgrade has worked for you fellas. I like the idea of a removable plate for multiple bevels/Blade’s.

At erock's suggestion, I tried the FastCap solution - much, much less expensive, and works fantastically well.

I had the Betterley, but even there it sat slightly below the plane of the saw bed, and so it still had the potential of introducing errors when cutting smaller delicate pieces (unless you shim it to the exact plane.

I think there's ultimately no substitute for a custom made wooden one (or phenolic, if you have the capabilities of milling that), which matches the level of the saw bed.  Since I started making my own there's no going back.

I was looking at the Betterly and it shows installing wit small o rings on the screws and then using a straight edge to adjust the height with the 6 screws. Did that not work well?

Another user of the Fastcap tape here...by design or by coincidence, the applied tape is flush with the surface, too.
