The tools in my truck were talking the other day. The Dewalts, PC's, Boschs, Makitas were not happy. They also were in the minority. Their complaint: They felt unused and unappreciated since the Festools moved in. I guess the truth hurts.

Just this past Tuesday morning, I was folding the laundry before heading out the door for the day. I noticed that JR wore a tee shirt over the weekend celebrating a festival, TapFest (software), that we attended on Deer Isle, Maine, back in 1989. I guess Virginia is not that far away afterall. |

Well, if Tom B can travel all the way from Austin, TX to Richmond, the least I can do is try to fly in from the Burbank/Los Angeles, CA area.
My woodworking shop is just south and a long block east of the Burbank Bob Hope Airport. That is so convenient. Unfortunately American Airlines stops serving BUR on 7 February 2012. AA offered good connecting flights to Reagan and Dulles. Now I will need to use LAX which is larger and not as convenient.
Of course all this depends on the exact schedule of the FOG Fan Fest in Richmond. I really want to participate.

This is awesome and it just perfectly illustrates why this forum is so great - not only do we enjoy each others company well enough to share tips and experiences, we enjoy it so much that several members are willing to travel hundreds of miles to meet in person! Carroll, With your long and storied career you probably have tons of frequent traveler miles and loyalty to different airlines just I did / do. Delta and USAirways are the predominant carriers here with over 60% of the market. Often a DC airport offers great rates and fewer stops, but Norfolk and even Williamsburg are handled by discount airlines. DC is a 2 hour drive, Williamsburg about 1 hour and Norfolk about 1.5 hours. If you travel all this way to attend, if you have never been to Colonial Williamsburg I would urge you to look into extending your stay if time permits to spend a day there and be amazed at what craftsmen from another era did without power cords. Just a suggestion. Peter |

Funny you bring up Colonial Williamburg, Peter. I have loved that place for over 50 years. Probably I have stayed there 40 times. Circa 1974 I was a delegate to a movie industry international standards conference that lasted for 10 days at a hotel there. My late wife Jean and I stayed at one of the inns, so we had the chance to eat at most of those inns on that trip. All three of our children were with us there in the fall of 1977 for several days. At that time our oldest was 15 and our youngest an infant.
One of the waiters at an inn provided us a favorite family expression: "Spoonbread just loves butter!"
You are correct, there are many ways to approach Richmond by air. For the 1977 trip I had produced a TV special in DC. We had flown our own King Air to a general aviation field near DC. On the way home we flew it to Norfolk, where we rented a car. Then I had to fly commercial to Boston for my studio while Jean flew the King Air home to Burbank with the kids.
This is one of those trips where it would be so convenient to still have a pressurized turbo-prop able to use fairly small fields. However, these days the insurance and hanger, plus fuel and maintenance on such a plane eats you alive. I don't miss those expenses.
Sure, I expect to combine FOG Fest with some quality spoonbread, with butter, at Colonial Williamsburg.

Carroll It funnny both Peter and you bring up Colonial Williamburg, When I mentioned the Fest to my wife her first thought was oh good here comes a Williamsburg Trip.
She is already thinking she can stay in Willlamsburg during the days ( and shop )of the fest and I could make the 1 hr drive to Richmond and have my fun...
It didn't take her long to want to go back to Williamsburg as we have done this once a year now for about 15 years. we love it there
I am waiting to get some idea on the dates and I guess will be making plans based on that

I hate to say this, but Cherry Blossom time in DC (typically the third week of March to the second week of April) is not in the time frame. Realistically I looking at later part of June.. the last weekend of June I will be attending a conference in Louisville with my wife ( who has been drafted to help with this endeavor - she just doesn't know it yet.) Can't commit right now because many things have to come into focus. March into April is too unpredictable anyway . Peter |

Wife & I have been to DC area several times during C-Blossome time. If it were not that we were there to visit our chauf-- er, our daughter, we would never have survived the traffic around the area. Our daughter knows the roads and is somewhat a crazy driver (I think she came by that part honestly) so wife & i just sit back and relax as we get whizzed all around the town. On my own, them dayz is a while behind me. BTW, Builderbob, I'll wait for you on I-84 right where Rt 7 branches off. I'll be sittin' on my lawn mower so you can spot me. I hope you have space for it, as I shore would hate ta lose it. If it ain't too much ta ask, we could stop for Tom(off in the boonies of Texas) along the way from picking up Woody from Anchorage. It's really not out of the way. And Kristian, what's a little hop across the pond? I mean, what the heck, I managed to make several trips to Stuttgart and back just to visit with my mother-in-law (she rests in peace now) along with meeting all the rest of the outlaws. A short hop of 4000miles to be with a bunch of tool freaks should be nothing. Right? Tinker |
