New Mobile workshop MW 1000
« on: July 17, 2018, 07:04 AM »
New Mobile Workshop available from October

Of all the new Festool items (hitting europe first I think) I am most interested in the mobile workshop. Looks like festool's version of Timothy's (aka Benchworks) MF-TC which I always liked. Last summer I invested in Peter Parfitt's Parf guide and a couple of sawhorses but like the idea of having it all as one rolling station.

Anybody else interested? has a crazy price though going by the RRP.

I really like Tim's MFTC design. It is intimidating for me to build, but the tag price Festool set makes me more willing to give Tim's cart a try. I can just imagine the Festool cart here would be over $1,000CAD... I can make 4+ Tim's cart for that price.

I see the Festool cart being more for site job and Tim's cart for shop work.

I dislike the base unit as it's not very space efficient: Laid down it has quite some free air below it, standing up the wheels needlessly inrease footprint, the black bottom is mainly airspace (an aluminium frame would have given the same stiffness with less waste). Will skip that.

But the extension table is quite interesting, it conntects to KAPEX on an UG, MFT/3 and CMS. As street price of it already fell below 2/3 of list here (so 3 extensions for the price of one MFT/3) I'll likely get some of these.

Another who wants the extension tables! I would love a pair of them as my tiny shop would benefit from the removable units. No news on when they might be available in the US though.

What about setting this up as a mobile vac sys station? The pump could live on a shelf and the head mounted to the top.

I have used the MW1000 on my MFT3 for the past couple of weeks. It is a great addition but to be honest it is kind of expensive for what it is.

It does work well for me though - I have my MFT 3 on a rolling base the same height as the MFT 3 with legs so I can hook up my second MFT 3 for extension of the work space. When I do this I still usually end up having too little space for the extras/tools so I am happy with the MW 1000 as such.

It also glides along with no issues when I need to roll away the MFT 3 table.

Line up has been reduced with the introduction of Mafell/Metabo tools. Red Green and Blue do mix well in the shop.

So can the extension table only be mounted to the one side or can it be mounted to both sides and front? I.e, two extension one on each side and one on the front  and one on the side?

It can be mounted to any side on the MFT 3 no problem.

The fitting is for the alu profile so you can slide it to where ever you like and clamp it in place regardless of side since the profile is, of course, the same all around the MFT3.

There are plastic adjustable feet that are hard plastic so they slip and slide a little but in my case it is welcome since my MFT 3 is on a lockable rolling base. Guess you can put a rubber piece under the adjustable feet if you want them a little more secure but the legs themselves are not that rigid so I won't bother.

I just received my MW 1000 table (the add on) and I find it very well constructed and easy to use, once you get the hang of pushing the connector into the profile of the MFT/3. For its price I consider it a very good investment in adaptability in my shop (it was 166 euro excluding tax).

And where can that kit be bought for 166?
Cheapest I could find was 209, so that's quite the difference.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to make a video about the MW1000. I first saw it at the Axminster Open Day and really like the concept. It wobbles a little but then one has to remember what it is - an adaptable mobile work station that will help move key tools around and provide a reasonable working platform.

If people expect it to be stable enough for hand planning or other aggressive activity then they will be disappointed. Having said that, I am sure that I can find a simple way to allow some quite energetic work to be done safely on its work surface.

One of my professional friends has just bought one and it is now a key part of his away day kit when he takes new pieces to client's houses.

it looked really nice and a convienent way to work on site. However I think the MFT table is a bit narrow in width.

Jobbie, I am contiplating a narrow table for my shop with drop down pegs on either the back side or front for the few times i need the extra width. Or maybe just a drop leaf. My shop is narrow and I barely have space to walk around my MFT.

I have to correct myself:
... the extension table ... conntects to KAPEX on an UG, MFT/3 and CMS.
The MW 1000 Table is, according to the included 'manual' (one sheet of A4), forbidden to connect to anything beyond a MFT/3 and the MW 1000 base unit.

Hi Ron,

I think that a lot of sawing can still be done on the MW1000. I hope to demo this in my next video in the New Year.

I liked this field review of the MW, . A good assessment of the pros and some cons.
