I was just checking to see how much certain tools were currently priced, and I noticed Tool Nut is now showing what the new price will be for any orders after 02/28/2018.   The example I saw was for the Festool DF 700 XL EQ Plus Domino Joiner Set for
$1,430.00, which will increase $70.00 to $1,500.00 after February.

Wow!

The 2017 increase was mainly limited to the new Airstream batteries being added to kits over the old ones and other accessories/consumables.  The tools themselves saw very minor/if any increases.

I guess they will make up for it in 2018?
Current systainer to productivity ratio:  very high

Sure it's "minor" at only 5%.

But it's 5% every year, meaning 20% in the last 4 years.

How much did Dewalt's tracksaw increase over the same time ?
Makita's ?
Milwaukee's impact and Drills ?
Bosch's sanders ?

All of which go on sale from time to time too.

You remember the old adage about the frog jumping out of a boiling pot of water right ?

I blame the customers. You keep buying them, and FT is happy to oblige.

Actually that would be 21.55%, but I don't think that is the point you're going after.

I would rather see higher introductory prices on new tools, with them getting cheaper as the company has ammortized the cost of the design and manufacture.

It's really getting hard to justify certain Festools.  When I got the e-mail for the recon CT26 today, the price seemed high so I checked what they are going for new.  $700.00.  For a CT26.

Fascinating how dealers like Toolnut turn the annual price increases into a major promotional event. Imagine what Black Friday would be like if instead of manufacturers and retailers competing to lower prices to promote sales they simply made competing commitments to raise prices higher after the holiday. Technically this creates the same urgent economic incentive to make a purchase now as a "sale" does but after so many years it feels like a manipulative and abusive relationship.

Pssst. Should the normal folks realize the consequences of the word 'exponential' (especially for our banking scam system) they would rebel...

That certainly makes the $1156 I recently spent for a reconditioned DF 700 appear to be a stroke of genius. [big grin]

This sounds like saying the market force is the culprit.

How come few drivers complain about luxury cars in the same way we woodworkers think about high-end tools?

Without admitting it, many folks love being an owner of a Festool for its prestige status (in addition to, of course, its functionality). I never have had an issue selling my Festool items (to make room for other tools) at a price very close to what I paid for (thanks to this 5% annual price increase!). On Kijiji, within hours, I saw multiple responses to my ads and no aborted sales. Even an old-style systainer was snatched  away from my hands at a very good price (to me).

Market force indeed.

Take another example: iPhone X, model A1865 with 64 GB of NAND, carries a bill of materials of US $370.25. Its retail price is $1000. Samsung Galaxy S8 with 64GB has bill of materials of $302 and retails for $720.

Price has nothing to do with cost. As long as someone is buying, manufacturers are happy to take as much money from you as you are willing to pay. The perceived value and level of competition determines retail price. If customers are buying, it implies they are not frustrated with the price enough to walk away and go elsewhere. Noone expects customers be happy.

I, by the way, stay away from everything Apple as a matter of principle.

Call me economical (I am not cheap  [big grin]). I have never paid for a cellphone; always a new free phone, every two years, on two-year plans (previously three until they were banned). I would rather spend the $1000 on a new CT26 (coming to Canada "soon"!).

I was not so much complaining about the price increase, as I was reminding everyone that higher prices are coming, so do your shopping now !

In my case, saving $70.00 by making my purchase before 02/28/2018, is a no brainer  (as long as it is something you already plan to  purchase anyway).

I also noticed there was no indication of a price increase for the current CT models.  I suspect this has more to do with the newer models being released after 01/01/2018 in the UK (then the US later).  Call it an inventory incentive sale, by not increasing the price  (Either that or Tool Nut has just not gotten around to updating these items yet).

I "think" the reason for no increase on the Planex Easy, is due to the fact it is new this year.   If you look over to the existing Planex Drywall Sander LHS 225 , it is increasing $60.00 in Feb 2018.

Of course, the "being new" theory does not seem to apply to the new battery sanders.....go figure.

Some errors in that list w.r.t categories.

Kind of shocking to see how these prices keep going up.

Makes me feel good about buying the Makita cordless track saw as well as the Makita 118" rail. Those 2 items cost me $675 total. Festool equivalent for those 2 items will be $1315. Love the Makita. Not sure I would love the Festool equivalent costing almost double.

You know that $50 we saved with the vouchers, they want it back...plus interest. [blink]

Another price increase, call me surprised.  Wait, never mind I forgot its yearly now.

Used to be once every six months!? Or was that another brand?

Anyway; $,€ etc. is one big scam. Festools can't be whipped up out of nothing like Dollars and Euro's.

I will leave it at that, anything more will probably result in a political discussion that's against FOG rules.

I don't ever remember it being once every six months so must have been another brand.

And yeah, lets leave the rest alone.

Or the paper catalog that was released every two years, and the prices that got changed every one year.

The Trion became cheaper after I bought it ;). That one got reduced a fair bit after the first Carvex was released.

I have been considering purchasing a ts 75 for a while now but honestly, rather than jump to purchase it now, I'm more considering the dewalt track saw which can run on the same rails (which I already own for my of 1400). Festool has always been the highest price point in the market, and for some of their tools, they seem over priced. Others are actually quite justifiable when you consider the time savings that some of the features offer compared to the competition... What this price jump will do is close the gap between me justifiably spending double the money to get all the great accessories that come with a festool system, or deciding not to fund a company that is raising their prices to an even higher point than they already are above the competition without adding anything additional. I have no problem paying more if they are offering more, but the other brands who's prices are staying the same have products that are improving. Festool is offering the same quality and keeps raising their price.

From my experience buying German tools/machinery, it's a common and accepted practice to raise prices around April 1st each year. For people in the US, this likely comes as a surprise. The unfortunate part is the overall US price increases seem to be outpacing inflation. Over the short term business will likely be fine, but as the cable companies found out, you can only raise rates so far. People are cutting the cord by the millions, flocking to the competition in streaming. Festool management should take note, America is not Germany. Competition here is fierce, and fortunes can be lost much faster than they are made.
