Vlies for DTS 400?
« on: September 11, 2017, 10:03 AM »
Thank you to anyone who can help - and a "heads up", I am posting from Australia (but am very happy to have product from overseas if this is the only option).

I have a DTS 400 sander, and because it's nice and compact, and can get into corners etc, I am keen to get some Vlies pads for this machine to clean up metalwork and so on.

Truly, I had simply assumed these were available (wouldn't have stopped me buying the sander anyway), but a look on Festool site here in Australia says there isn't such a product (or I missed it somehow).  I've had a Google, and found a thread here saying "discontinued", but that was contradicted.

Anyone know if Festool make Vlies for the DTS 400?  And if so, where I might be able to buy some (USA dealers, I'm happy to buy from you if it won't get you in trouble with Festool)?

You might be better off with Viles on a round Bosch, Flex, Ryobi, or even the lucky-starfish brand from Bunnings?
It is not like you need magical vacuum and dust control, so the first cheaper sander with velcro would work as well as any other.

What are you doing with it?
I have had mixed results... outside= not so great, inside is ok so far.

Initially, I want to use it to clean some surface rust from a cast iron table top... and the only reason I'm seeking it for the DTS 400 is because I'm still putting aside coin to buy an ETS 150 ;)  (I'm still setting up, and getting the workshop and tools together, hence no beefier "normal" sander yet)

Buy the 150 mm Vlies and cut it to fit the DTS.

A wire wheel or some 240 would work too.
I use a makita grinder for some of this sort of stuff with a flap wheel.
Or any sander with 240, and if that doesn't cut it then more down to 180, etc...

I thought you were using the viles with the surfix, so ignor the inside/outside point.

Now there's an answer from outside the box - please don't ask why I didn't think of it myself - thank you!

Thanks Holmz, I didn't realise that using actual sandpaper on cast iron tops was OK (I assumed it would ruin the surface)!

Seems I now have two good solutions, thank you all :)

It is even simpler… lay down a piece of vlies (or scotchbrite or whatever) and put the sander down on it. Start and off you go… : )

It is already ruined with the rust, you are not goign to ruin it more.
And under the patina it is still good metal.

Once you are done, then either wax it etc, or use Birchwood Casey(TM) gun blue. (which is not great, but looks nice).

Bert's suggestion is good. Or just use scotchbright by hand. There sell scotchbright flap wheels which fit the 5" grinder...

Thank you again, another product I wasn't aware of!

I was considering either Silverglide (https://www.carbatec.com.au/machinery-and-accessories/lubricant/surface-lub-and-protection) or Camelia oil (https://www.carbatec.com.au/handtools-and-handplanes/accessories/oils/camellia-oil-240mm-bottle)... looks like I am off to do some more reading, thank you! :)

The gun blue actually can rubs off but it looks nice for a bit.
I would something else, even just a paste wax, or a paste wax over the blue.

I would be trying the camellia oil myself.
