D700 vs D700 XL
« on: May 16, 2019, 05:41 AM »
In a sentence what is the main difference between the D700 and the New D700 XL?

I am very new to the Festool system of tools, so please treat me gently. :-)

Chris

It's all the same, there is only one DF700, and XL is added to distinguish it from the smaller DF500.

Some dealers are a bit free with the additions they put in the names, so maybe that's where the confusion comes from.

I think there are two different sets offered. The difference is in the accessories included.

DF700 EQ is what one retailer uses:

http://www.leevalley.com/en/Festool/page.aspx?p=69453&cat=5,105,68330

Another retailer offers something different:

https://www.woodcraft.com/products/festool-domino-xl-joiner-df-700-set

To me, DF700 is bigger than DF500, and the suffix "XL" (whatever its intention was) is unnecessary. DF700 XL could actually be interpreted by the uninformed to mean the extra large version of a DF700, which, of course, isn't the case.

No.

XL is simply part of the name of the tool itself.

If different packages were offered they'd name it -Plus or -Set.

To answer your question, the size and length of the tenons, 500 has smaller tenons used on about 90% of the things you'll build. the 700 is for larger thicker projects like gates, entry and interior doors. I recently got the 700 and used it to start building some patio furniture out of 2x4s. Made it quick and easy

Best way to be sure is to go to the appropriate Festool website for your location...
In the UK, it looks like only 1 version of the 700 is offered:
https://www.festool.co.uk/products/domino-jointing-system/domino-joining-machines/574420---df-700-eq-plus-gb-240v

Other countries may have more offerings. For example, the US has 2, a "plus" (which is the base config) and a "set" that includes some extra stops.

I am in the UK and so I can see that the D700 is available (as is the D500) I am happy with the difference between the 500 and the 700 but it was the "XL" denotation that I was unsure of, as indicated it seems this is just the way other countries seem to delineate it.

As I understand it I have the option (in the UK) of just two machines the D500 or the D700 and I assume they both come either with a set of accessories or not. Correct?

Correct.

Maybe except the '(in the UK)' part as AFAIK both the DF 500 and DF 700 are available on all markets, but I might be wrong with that.

From what I can see, looking at the Dutch and UK festool sites, the DF500 is called Domino, and the DF700 is called Domino XL, The XL is added to the word Domino, not to the DF 500/700 (E)Q-(plus) name.
