Which sander for finishing drywall?
« on: April 12, 2018, 09:35 AM »
Other than the planes, ( I don't do enough drywall to make it worthwhile) which ROS  would you recommend.  I'm getting fairly decent (very little dust) with an old Dewalt ROS using Diablo SandNet disks and a CT-SYS. I'm looking at the ETS or ETS EC ones in particular.  I have a bosch 1250 DEVS on order so I don't need a rotex.  Would the old ETS 125 be suitable? I know it's a fine finish sander.  95% of my work is done on a jobsite.  I don't really need an all purpose sander.  One almost exclusively for drywall with some finish sanding. Thanks .

The older ETS is a great sander, compared to the newer EC model it will be heavier for vertical/Wall work or ceilings, but is a great sander.  6" will cover more wall space than a 5" model if time is a factor for you.  Neither round sander will get into the corners like a Delta Sander or Square Pad sander.
Not as many Sanders as PA Floor guy.....

My its 125 has logged hundreds of hours drywall sanding without any problems.
There is a learning curve though in terms of handling and suction. I use 1/3 to 1/2 suction on walls, 1/2+ on ceilings. Also need to use a light touch if there is a lot of mud on the wall. The sander will bite into thick mud and leave swirls. Early use can be frustrating but once you get the hang of it its wonderful.
Grit wise you should be fine with 120, 150, 180 depending on how good or bad the mud work is

If you have the chance definitely check out the EC versions or the Mirka Deros (or Leros which is their Planex). Holding one vs the old ETS should give you a good idea of the improvement for vertical and overhead work.

I use a pro-5 (ec 125?) with a ct-sys for small jobs and patches. It sure is a nice package to carry up 3 flights.

I use the Planex and Delta sander on the AC for big jobs.
