The tools in my truck were talking the other day. The Dewalts, PC's, Boschs, Makitas were not happy. They also were in the minority. Their complaint: They felt unused and unappreciated since the Festools moved in. I guess the truth hurts.

The 149 pc set you guys are talking about, is that the same as the Centrotec Sys 09 kit or a different kit? I ordered the Cent Sys 09 kit in germany. My Mom is picking it up and bringing it back. Luckily she loves me because she is going to be ticked when she sees the Sys box. I also ordered one of the hand sanders with the built-in vacuum attachment. It should be here in a few weeks, I post pics when I get it.

Well, that truth certainly hasn't sunken in yet with Festool. God, what is the Centrotec range LIMITED. I'm glad we also have Protool here, so we can buy two drill bits more then Festool offers. |

 Gosh, $599 for a 2008 Centrotec set ......... you guys must really be starved of them 'cos here they go for far less. You can get the '09 set now for 215 euro and I've seen the '08 set for 167.

i have been asking for the kit for ages and now i started making my own!!!!
did any of you guys ever try buying a cheap ryobi drill bit set for 9.99 at the depot or any other bit, extender etc... all you have to do to make all these attachments work on your centrotec chuck is to grind off the edges of the hexagon just so slightly with a grinder, belt sander or what ever your preference is, and BAM!!! you got your self a centrotec fitting bit set for 10$, i'm sure they don't compare in quality or look as cool but hey for 10 smackers you can't go wrong.

I've taken some old bits and ground the edges of the hex. While this makes the bits fit the chuck, they don't stay locked in place like Centroctec bits. The detents are still in the wrong place.  |

you can always grind out new detents when the hex is long enough, i'm going to try this sometime this week and see if there is enough space to slap a tiny extension between the drill and the centrotec chuck just so it brings the detents up enough to catch.

Just received my 09 set a couple of days ago & not to impressed with the content in the box. A small socket set, 5 wood bits, some steel bits & loads of 25mm insert tips. I only paid 174GBP which is about 100GBP off, but if i had paid full price i think i would have sent it back & tried to get the 08 set. Not one drill/countersink bit or self centering bit in there There is plenty of space in the bottom to add some bits but i thought for that sort of money you would be set. Woodguy |

The 100 squid off was too tempting. I guess i will just have to fill it with the stuff trades people really need. The bits are really nice & sharp though. I have dozens of torx bits but i can count on one hand the amount of times i have needed a torx in the last year ! I guess they must be really popular in Europe ?

i use torx alot spax make an mdf screw which only comes with a torx head and i use them alot and on alot of appliances i fit they have torx screws supllied for fitting

Recently I received my 09 Sys centrotec set. For what it's worth here's my review.
The ATTIC
- the stubby drivers on the right side are great. I didn't even know they existed. I think they are the shortest setup you can have in the drill, very handy.
- The wood bits in the middle are Ok. Having either the drill bits or the long driver bits in this location would be good.
- I really like the set of driver bits on the left side. All organized and labeled on the top of the box. Very cool, very handy.
Top of the inside
- Box with metal drill bits, very handy for me. Having dealers stock these boxes with either wood or metal bits would be cool. Let the customer pick which type of bit set works for them.
- I liked getting the socket set but thought it would probably be fairly useless. Within a couple of days of getting the set I had to service an older Franke faucet. The socket set worked perfect, no scratches on the exposed faucet handles. I would have never guessed.
- Of course getting the Toolie and parts is very cool. Probably won't get much use but glad to have it.
Bottom of the inside
- I think this is where the set really falls short and is a bit annoying. As you can see from the pic there are a ton of driver bits in the bottom of the box. Mind you that's after I took a bunch out and put them in my C12 and T15 Sys. What was Festool thinking? Let's throw handfuls of crap in and up the count. A few would be Ok, but seriously. Considering the full set in the attic, I would prefer to see the money spent including more useful items.
- The awl, kind of useless; the eye hook attachment also kind of useless; I use a lot of eye lags, not eye hooks; The black adapter thing to put centrotec chucks onto a regular drill, Super cool. Probably won't use it much, but when I want it, it will be great to have.
Overall, I think it is a fairly cool set-up. Not great but not terrible either. I wouldn't push anyone to run out and get one. Price is high, usefulness is probably somewhat limited. If I were still doing lots of kitchen installs, this set would be almost perfect and get daily use. Doing installs is probably this sets strong point. With some refinement and a little more thought to price and content the next set could be really great. Add countersinks and long drivers; get rid of the nonsense drivers in the bottom of the box.
I also received the Festool sanding pad with factory hose attachment, haven't even had time to pick up paper for it though.

Just to throw in my .02? the '08 set is great, I use it daily. It appears that the later sets have included less useful items. I would not have wanted or needed sockets, that sounds like something that would be included in an impact driver Centrotec set- maybe someday...

I reground several Robertson drive bits from McFeely's to work directly in the Centrotec chuck; besides rounding the edges, you need the detent. I blogged about it during that week when I thought it would be fun to blog. I use them often and won't hesitate to 'Centrotec' more bits when necessary. |
