Along with most tool users, I frequently modify tools or accessories to work better, for me. I recently had a bit of an adventure with one of my sortainers. ( thanks to those who offered advice to repair my "repair".) I learned that a sortainer is just a bunch of parts snapped together to make a whole.
Basically there are just the following main parts: (2) vertical walls with indents for horizontal shelves or drawer glides, and a top and bottom. Each top and bottom is about 1 3/8" tall.
When I attach (2) sortainers together, I loose about 2 3/4" of space that could be used for storage. (almost a large drawer!!!)
I would like to see sortainers sold in pieces that can be mixed or matched as the end user would like. For example, if I wanted a (4) large drawer sortainer, I could order the sides, top and bottom, the drawers, and assemble myself. And save ( if my math is correct) 5 1/2" in total height. Not a big deal in a shop setting, but huge in the field (not to mention the weight savings)
Being able to order semi-custom sortainers pre-assembled would be cool, but I don't know the manufacturing end of that deal. I do know that someone is already manufacturing the parts and someone is assembling them. Why not let me assemble my own sortainer?

I like the idea of buying the parts separately and being able to modify them.
But I'd rather just see more drawer options in general like narrower deep drawers. Anyone notice how the big drawer in the sys5 is really flimsy and doesn't slide well when it loaded up with stuff? But the little drawers slide like a dream yet don't offer nearly enough height?

Dan, We only see part of the Tanos line, but they are working to expand their presence here. See:  Why don't you get in contact with Festool and ask who the Tanos rep is. He comes here occasionally, but I can't remember his name. His name is French I believe. Sorry, I couldn't help more. Peter |

The tools in my truck were talking the other day. The Dewalts, PC's, Boschs, Makitas were not happy. They also were in the minority. Their complaint: They felt unused and unappreciated since the Festools moved in. I guess the truth hurts.

And let you disassemble them too!! It's the disassembly of these Sortainers without breaking them that seems to stop everyone in their tracks. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone managing to get a Sortainer apart without breaking something in the process! Personally, I've love it for the Sortainers to be made so that they can be assembled and disassembled by the user with common tools. We are already part of the way to being able to customise them outselves, since we can mix and match the small and medium drawers, but lots of people want to do more than that. Forrest |
