Title: 3m PPS System for a Fuji Gxpc spray gun
Post by: wptski on March 24, 2016, 02:54 PM
Got a Large PPS H/O or pressurized cup with lids and liners after getting a mini yesterday.  This is sort-of a continuation of this thread (http://festoolownersgroup.com/finishing/kem-aqua-virgin-!-any-advise-please!/) which went way off topic into 3m PPS.

I wasn't expecting the clearance problem with the large cup with the Gxpc.  As one can see in the picture, it won't clear the hanging hook and the it won't even clear the trigger when rotated the other way.  I had hoped I'd be able to rotate it back further for better balance.  Not sure if I should return it or just live with its restrictions.  A midi size or 13.5oz would have been a happy medium but they don't make a H/O cup.

Hello Bill, I recently sold my Fuji Gxpc gun but the previous owner just simply removed the hook This gave more room to rotate the pressure cup

That would allow only a small amount more rotation before hitting again.  I've used that hook while working off a ladder so I could back brush some cedar after I applied stain so it's worth having.

I do have to make standing fixture like you have there.  Mine came with the aluminum gun holder to mount on the turbine but I attached it to a board and clamp wherever I want.

I see Tom has the same problem!

You wouldn't rotate the cup if you could?  Don't you rotate the mini cup or maybe you never have the need to?

Hello Happy Easter everyone
Actually, I just made the stand so I could take a photo for the sale

I found that without the hook you could rotate the pressure cup to the most comfortable position, and unfortunately it's right there where the hook is
You will understand when you fill up the cup with 25 ounces of product and try to find a good balance with the gun
For now, fill the cup up with water and check the gun balance. Maybe it will work for you

I'll see how a filled cup feels.  I do have two Fuji Gxpc guns so removing the hook is a possibility.

I have a better idea!  I couldn't remember if both threads on the so-called G-fluid coupler are SAE.  They are so I'll make another one about an inch longer which will clear everything.  Since that throws the weight outwards, if that becomes a problem I'll just shorten it to a happy balance.

I use the smaller PPS cup on my Gxpc and the larger cup on my syphon xpc. Unless you need to fit into tight areas, there is no need to rotate the cups into different positions. PPS cups can be sprayed while upside down because there is always pressure on the paint bag.
Rotating a large cup on a Gxpc might improve the balance.

I never stated to rotate the cup.

That's on of the best things about the PPS system, it allows you to spray in any position------rotate the gun as necessary.

Personally I think a 28-32oz PPS cup on a gravity gun is excessive. There's a reason the original Fuji cup was only 400ml.

Agreed. For me it's just too awkward to handle.
To each his own however.
The larger cup on the siphon gun works perfectly well.

No talking about a siphon gun but a Gxpc with a side mount cup.

Yeah, you can spray in any gun position but this is about the position of the cup in relationship to one's wrist.  It's seems to me that the closer the cup's weight is to one's wrist the easier it'll be on the wrist.

Fluid coupler extension.  Just have to test with water under pressure for leaks.  I can feel the difference even with an empty cup from rotated forward if used on a horizontal surface.  Made out 303 stainless steel.

Added the "tjbnwi" pressure tube mod also which should help bleed air from the large PPS cup is used for smaller amounts by shutting off the air flow to the Gxpc.

Trial by water today and that pressure tube mod really speeds up forcing air from the PPS liner!!  It was well worth the effort.

Tom:

In this thread or elsewhere, didn't you state that the HO PPS pressure don't hold their pressure?  I noticed this today using the mini(6oz) cup with water to clean my Gxpc.  It leaks around the top at the rotating locking collar.  Tried another lid/cup, same thing so I tried the large cup and it leak as well.

Here's another one!  Tom stated that he's kept water based material for two weeks with no issues.  I just kept water based poly for three weeks.  The only issue I had and maybe everyone else has seen this also but dried material cakes up on the spout possibly ending up on your target.  I think I had a couple of specs from this on my second coat.  On the third coat today I used a fresh lid and not a spec anywhere was to be found! [big grin]

Now the kicker.  While dumping the unused material back in the can I find that I used two liners.  How many have done the same?

I have had issue with the product drying on the nozzle. What I do now after each spray session is a damp tooth brush across the air cap and nozzle. Make sure you unplug the cup pressure line before you pull the trigger to do the scrub down.

Store the gun upside down if you're storing it with fluid in it for a few days.

I've never been able to get the lid on with 2 liners in the cup.

Sounds like you got a product bath in the past? ;D

I flushed the gun after every use but I did learn that that poly dry fast and sticks like glue to the air cap so tosh it in soapy water while flushing the gun.  I tore it down for a good cleaning today.

Those liners must have really been stuck together because I had no problem with the lid, three times too!

Never got a bath, it a habit of mine to disconnect the cup when I park the gun. It's a just incase habit.

I had an idea, I wondered if I heard no air leak while using the large cup because had two liners inserted?  Sure enough, I tried two with the mini cup and no air leak.

I still had a email response from 3M about the PPS system so I emailed them yesterday.  I just got a response and I told them that it doesn't leak with two liners inserted.  See what they respond.

My inquire at 3M got pasted up the ladder.  They suggest that I might have applied more than 10psi to the cup which I didn't.  They said although annoying it shouldn't affect its operation as long as it's only air leaking.

Okay, lets try that again!  Liners are stacked so I grabbed two from the top.  Lids are loose in a box so that's like drawing out of a hat.  Just using water, the mini-cup leaked so bad this time that it couldn't even push the air from the cup.  I even tried attaching to the adapter while leaving the cup loose to self-align itself first but it still leaked.  Added a second liner, again no leak.  One could cut off one liner at the large point near the lip and just use that with another liner.

Since nobody else here has mention leaks this bad, I can only assume that there are defective lids, liners or cups out there.  I did tell them about this bad leak but they haven't replied yet and I doubt if they will.

Wasn't it mentioned in this thread or others that some are reusing lids/liners?  I've only used PPS with poly and now with black latex.  The black latex gets stuck underneath the outside edge of strainer in the lid but I didn't notice this with the poly although it's very thin and rinses off easily.  Tried scrubbing with a gun cleaning brush which didn't touch it at all.  Had to remove the strainer and scrub it off then.  I do strain first anyway.  Maybe it was just reusing the liners only??

I reuse the liners only, up to 8 times. I do not reuse the lids except in the same spray cycle.

All parts was made on a 10" metal lathe I own, all worked better than the OEM setup, being to rotate the PPS allows better weight distribution to your wrist.  Make the new hex fitting with a Push To Release connector removing the barb(which I had to cut off) makes it easier also.

The fluid coupler was made out of stainless steel and the air fitting out of aluminum with an added "O" ring to seal any possible leaks.
