SW KA+ for desktop?
« on: July 09, 2017, 02:30 AM »
I just donated building my daughter a desk for her room and now need to paint it white.  I have some leftover KA+ and surfacer.  The wood surface for the desk is Baltic birch.  I suspect KA+ by itself isn't hard enough for a finish (or is it?).  What topcoat can I use over it to make the finish hard enough to resist pressure marks from pens, pencils, etc?  Or what is a better finish?  I'd like to avoid a mat or glass surface protector.

The best KA+ White color I have found is Surface cleared with KA+ clear.

I have a friend who has a sample piece under his office chair, it's held up very well.

Thanks Tom.  Is KA+ Clear over KA Surface different than KA+ White over KA+ Surface or same same?

The Surfacer white with the clear on it appears to be a brighter white to my eye than KA+ White with clear over it.

Unfortunately to avoid pressure marks in the substrate the actual wood plays more of a roll then the finish. If the material marks now before finish is applied there is going to be very little difference unless applying a thicker type finish like an epoxy pour. Do yourself a favour and prepare a test piece and try, especially if your daughter is heavy handed.
