Title: The Weathered Look
Post by: Trevin on December 13, 2017, 02:08 PM

My sister in-law asked me to build her a mantle for her fireplace.  Nothing fancy just a piece of white oak about 2" thick.  She wants it to have a "weathered" grayish look.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

A box of this and a bit of skill making miter joints should get you there :

Steel wool, vinegar and tea.

I would make the mantle out of white oak and take some cut-offs of the same material (go with the sister-in-law if possible) to a paint store to find the right stain.  Without knowing your conversations, weathered can mean a lot of different things from greyed, spalted, or discolored to worn or distressed, so I would try to involve her in the finishing process to best get the look she wants.

I say get a nice piece of reclaimed wood (barn beam piece) and mount it. Can’t replicate mother nature’s footprint on old wood...here is a beam in put in my house to replace the cheap builder grade mantle...

Go to https://designs.generalfinishes.com.    There are over a 1000 images of assorted projects people have done.   Most of these are following this finish scheme:  1. Paint with base coat.   2.  Seal with water soluble top coat.  3.  Glaze to get effect with their glazes, effects paints, etc.  4.  Put on final top coat to protect the project

Hint, let your sister browse through these to find something she likes.

They also have lots of technique videos.   Here may be what you want in a weathered barn wood gray.  https://generalfinishes.com/how-to-videos?page=4&search_theme_form=white%20milk%20paint&op=Search&form_build_id=form-fdMFDGf-BceXU-h3YQ61fZNkmGrbkFU_DbKNVh6jBUY&form_id=search_theme_form
