I just logged onto my Ipad but I did not sign in and I couldnt find the topic I started  Secret Doors.  I thought that was strange and I went on home page and der was nothing I then did a search and nothing came up  .  So I just signed in and it was still all der on the home page and I was able to find the topic Secret Doors when i searched it.

I then noticed NO guest are view my topic and never has been I noticed!

So I came to the conclusion  which properly has been mentioned some where on FOG but I havent read it that the OFF-TOPIC section on the front Page and every thing what is posted in it is BANNED from Guest viewing any off it.

All Banned from Guests  I was just wondering why that is really?

I just opened the forum in another browser (no login) and you are correct...I don't see your Secret Doors thread at all. Very strange...

It's probably the word "Secret" in the title.

The forum software could tell that you wanted to limit who saw the posts...

IT WORKED!

JMB,

There's good reason to hide certain sections from guests. Classified section is obvious for our protection but other sections are probably kept for members only to entice guests to join to see the full offerings.

I don't know if this apply anymore or not.  This is just speculation.

A few years back with the original administration, the forum got into a war of off-topic and it became nasty.  The admin choose to have the off-topic only for members and some special off-topic for members that requested access.
I don't remember if this was all the off-topics or just a few.  I don't know if that restrictions still working or not.

I am just guessing, I could be completly wrong, (as usual  Big Grin)

I suspect that this maybe an oversight from days long ago.  Membership does have it's privileges though.

True but it's obviously not a know fact on fog soo  guests who have been guest for years would never even know that they are missing out on the other topics as they don't know they exist.     Maybe like me they think they can see all topics well i thought you could until now.

I think the use of the word "banned" is a little over the top. I should remind you that we took over the forum a couple of years ago.

While I've done my best to make the changes we felt were necessary to open the forum up more to everyone, it's possible that I've overlooked some of the thousands of settings. This is the case here and it was not intentional. I'll go change those settings now. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Why join to gain privileges you'd never know exist?  Seems like it'd make more sense to show the forums so EVERYONE knows they exist and indicate that those forums are for members only.

Now that we're talking about guests here, everytime I open the FOG's homepage it says "Welcome, Guest. Please login or register." instead of logging me in automatically. When I open another page then I do get signed in. Why doesn't the website log me in on the homepage?

I basically check on the FOG from the homepage and scroll down to the recent posts list, like I assume most people do. If certain threads are hidden from guests then I as a regular member also miss those threads. Sometimes I suddenly find a thread on here which is recent but which I haven't seen before even though it got quite some responses. Now I understand why I missed them.

Am I the only one with this problem or is this the same for all people here, that they're not automatically logged in on the homepage?

Alex,

There's an option when you log in for the forum to keep you logged in. Also, it utilizes cookies in your browser. So, if you clear them or have your browser set to disable them, then it will not work.

I know Shane, and both things you mentioned are enabled on my side. That's why I do get signed in automatically with all other pages of the FOG I open, just not the homepage, it's strangely enough the only exception. That's why I'm wondering if other people here have the same or that I'm unique to have this odd problem.

Alex,

I can log in on any of my 6 or more devices and it will bring me to the point that you are desiring.  It is not anything special to my moderator status.  I occasionally have to log out to try and see what others who are not members can see.
