Scheduled Maintenance - Thurs, Dec. 17
« on: December 14, 2015, 07:38 PM »
Hey all. This Thursday Festool will be doing some scheduled maintenance on the FOG. The updates should result in fewer issues and downtimes in the future.

The bad news is that the FOG will be offline for approx. 24 hours beginning this Thursday, Dec. 17 at approx. 8:00 am ET.

You will need to resort to Morse Code and telepathy during this time. Thank you in advance for your patience.

I trust that 'log in stability' will be high on the list of things to attend to?

OK - so we actually need a list of things to do while the FOG is down. I'll start the ball rolling ...

1. Go to the Mafell forum and post lots of happy stories about your Festool tools.

2)  Hang out at your nearest Big Box Store telling all the people buying Ryobi & Black&Decker how they're money could be better spent. By spending 5 times as much.

(sadly I won't have time to do this, as I'm painting all my wall plugs green)

@TylerC is there any chance of the missing photos *ever* coming back or are they lost forever?

Unfortunately, those are lost and gone forever. That pre-dates my time at Festool, so I'm not 100% in the know on it. I'll dig around today to make sure that nothing can be done. That said, I wouldn't expect good news.

Thanks Tyler. Even if they can't come back into the forum posts they belong to, if we could get them back into an album maybe? Then at least we might be able to find the photos we're looking for and even add them back in to posts ourselves.

@GarryMartin  I checked this morning, and -- as I feared -- the images are simply lost and gone. Sorry again.

@bigred00 - Making it mobile friendly isn't part of this update, but we're working on it. We actually just had a conversation this morning. We definitely want that to happen, but we need to make sure that it doesn't happen in a way that deletes any content or functionality.

I was going to bring this up earlier, however I didn't know where to post it, but this seems like a convenient place.

Over the last 2-3 weeks I have had very limited availability of the FOG on my iPad & iPhone. I will actually be able to log-in only 1 in 10 times on the mobile devices. I keep receiving a message stating I've exceeded my 5 log-ins (even though it's my first one) and I must wait to log-in again. Or it will state that there was an error and I need to log-in at which time it then tells me I've exceeded my 5 log-ins.

I originally took screen shots of all these FOG messages but not knowing where to post them, I have since trashed them.

Just a heads-up for you...

@TylerC  when the server is down any chance you can look at the Unread posts issues effecting iPads that has already been mentioned in a previous thread.
The problem seems to be when I login to the Fog click on the unread section at the top and it shows one or two pages of unread messages, but if I have to log out without reading most of the posts and then log back in again all the unread messages have-disappeared from the unread section, even though they have not been read.

While we are on the subject of device issues . . .

Using safari on iPhone, I find the home page jumps up and down repeatedly making things near impossible to read/click.

Any one else have this?

Yes, my iPhone does that - my iPad doesn't.  Rotate it 90 degrees and then back.  It stop that.  Just a quick twist of the wrist.

Here are a couple of screen shots.

So I'm sitting on the couch and because I'm too lazy to get my Mac Book Pro, I'm using my iPhone instead. I decided to click on a Kapex thread and I received this message instead.

Well I clicked a couple more times and finally The thread came up.

Then I clicked on the Scheduled Maintenance thread and when I tried to reply because I was already logged in, this message came up.

Since the update instead of the number of new posts on the top tab label I get "(Bad Value!) Festool Owners Group - Index".

I am using IE10.

@TylerC  I assume you want any feedback on issues / teething problems?

There seems to be at least one problem with the new count number in tabs - I get a (Bad value!) rather than a count...

And you can't select how you want a photo attached - it just attaches as full screen. And if you add one by mistake, you don't seem to be able to remove it as "Clear attachment" doesn't seem to work.

I'm using IE 11 on Windows 10.

[EDIT] Issue also on Chrome and Firefox on Windows 10.

Still not working for me. Can someone else please check?

Reply to a post, choose an attachment; do you get an option to insert full size, as a thumbnail etc., as we did before?

Once you've selected an attachment, click the "Clear Attachment" link; does it clear the attachment at all?

It's working on our end. Is anyone else having this problem?

In regard to attachments and thumbnails, it works a little differently now. Honestly, I think it's a better choice. The updated version automatically generates an expandable thumbnail. It should be a smoother experience now.

Ya, probably about 30 seconds to refresh on a 2010 MacBook Pro, but over a minute on a new iPhone 6s.

Previously it was about 10 seconds or less on the MBP and the 6s.

Things are speedy here also.  I don't know if anything was done to correct or it was just internet traffic that slowed things down.

This was not planned, per se.  A security update that was run post-migration disabled the add-on that provided those features.  The add-on was last updated in 2008.  I'm looking into alternatives.  I'll let you guys know ASAP.

It was fine for a few hours, now it's terrible again.

I know @Shane Holland did some wizardry to get the forum to recover from the last time this happened, hopefully that wasn't undone in the upgrade.

Slow SLOW SLOW!!!

My technique now is to click on something after FOG eventually comes up, then open another tab in IE11 and Windows 7 and check in on about ten high res graphics sites before the link come up in the FOG.

Please get this fixed.

Yesterday (AEST), when others complained of slowness it was probably the fastest I had ever experienced since joining the FOG.

BUT this morning, it took me five attempts to open the FOG, the last successful attempt took around 2mins, and actually logging on also was much longer than in the past.   [eek] [eek] [eek] [eek]

Also I want image options returned. Surely you could have achieved similar file size restraints by just simply reducing the allowed image file size.

By counting seconds - 48 seconds to first upload this reply, 61 to reopen the thread, and 36seconds to open modify.

Same here. On both win 10 and iPad 2. Extremely poor user experience. Reflects badly on the brand.

Yeah, ridiculously slow on a range of devices.

Getting the impression this forum is hosted on a shoe string budget, with limited expertise. Maybe it's time the forum was migrated to a more main stream hosting software like vbulletin where there is greater support and resources to manage.

Apparently there are some tweaks that need to be done to enhance the performance of the forum right now.  I know that Shane had to do some of those when he was changing servers many months ago.  The fact that the forum runs much quicker at some times and slower at others is an oddity and I am sure that there is some head scratching and much investigation going on.  I am sure that it will be worked out.

The software has been updated to a newer version.  Unfortunately there might be changes to posting images that are pretty consistent to what other forum software is doing.  Change is inevitable.

That be said I am going to say that some of the comments here have surprised me with both their comment and tone.  I probably love this forum as much or more than most, but some of the comments go way beyond whatever I could imagine.

Carry on.  I am not trying to change your feelings or thoughts.  Just expressing mine.

I don't think it's too out of line, can you imagine if Bosch's forum went down? There's no question that it looks bad on the company.

I'm also surprised Festool Germany hasn't really put forth much effort and it's Festool USA that's driving the entirety of the forum. Festool isn't an IT company, why are they trying to cheap it out with freeware forum software with zero end user support? I run the same software myself on a few forums, but I'm not a multi-national corporation or supporting any business.

Anyways, back to the problem at hand, my guess is the httpd daemon is over-saturating the number of available connections to the database. Once things start queueing up, delays grow exponentially from there. It usually better to queue the users at the daemon than the daemon to the database, because one user can generate 10-100 queries in one page load.

All:

I'm working to solve the slowness issue.  I can assure you that, in the end, this server will be several orders of magnitude faster than what it was running on.  I've had to read through the server logs and analyze the data to make an informed decision.  I apologize for this taking a little bit of time on a Sunday.  I had several family obligations that prevented me from making big changes mid-day.

With that being said, I've just pushed some changes that should solve the slowness issue.  This configuration update is applying now, but will take a bit of time to complete.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me, one of our great moderators, or @TylerC if you feel that your issue hasn't been addressed appropriately.

Thanks,
-Scott

The fact that Scott and others are spending their weekend on fixes suggests otherwise. We upgraded the server because we're trying to make it better. As with most web upgrades, it has bugs, and we're working on them.

I am fully aware of Scott's efforts and they are appreciated. While I understand that you may take comments personally, they are not directed at staff or volunteers who are dedicated to solving them. They are doing the best with the resources available. I accept that change is inevitable, but please find a better way to upgrade the site so there is less impact on the current users and the legacy content.

I think the days when this forum was run and supported by 'enthusiasts' are long gone. Surely Festool could make a real effort to support FOG members in what in the end is sales promotion. Slowness does not invite participation.

The FOG should be sufficiently supported without staff having to solve problems in their own time. It might be time for Festool HQ to provide additional support to Festool USA.

Having said this; Peter, Seth, Phil, Scott and Tyler - thank you for your dedication in what must be difficult times.

Pretty sure that we all are in this forum to get advice and possible give suggestions and advice based on our experience. If that doesn't happen completely or as efficiently for a day or two, the world really doesn't end. I came from an environment where over 20,000 demand response trips were booked and automatically scheduled and dispatched every week day of the year. Now, if that system ran slow or it went down, and it did sometimes, that's a real problem as people with disabilities traveling throughout the Chicago metropolitan area were impacted significantly. So what if we aren't able to shoot the "s___"  as quickly as we normally do for a couple of days. I didn't see anyone asking questions that require significant medical treatment or put them in jeopardy of losing all their money if they don't get an answer immediately. Just take this in stride. If the ultimate end result doesn 't match what has been suggested the end result will be, then maybe there is room for some dissatisfaction. Even if it's close to what the intent was and getting better, cut everyone some slack. After all, the whole point is to use your tools, Festool or not, to either make a living or for satisfacdtion, fun, or to make furntiure or pieces for your friends and family. What difference does it make if the site slow temporarily. It just doesn't have that level of "life and death" significamce for me.

please find a better way to upgrade the site so there is less impact on the current users and the legacy content.

I can assure you that I've tried to take all precautions to protect legacy content during my tenure with Festool USA.  The inline attachments mod failure was 100% out of my control (outside of choosing not to take an important security update, which I cannot do).  The mod creator had abandoned the mod, and no alternative was readily available.

I've tried very hard to keep actual downtime to a minimum.  This is actually the reason I decided to move the FOG to a different hosting company.  The previous hosting company's support team hadn't been as responsive as I needed them to be.  I've chosen a new hosting company that allow's me a great deal of control over how we will run this site going forward.  I will admit that I'm still working out the 'kinks'.  I simply ask that you bear with me.  I'm doing what I can, all while trying to protect the legacy pieces and parts of the FOG that we all value.

I sincerely hope that the FOG experience is a positive one for all of our visitors going forward.  @TylerC and I are both relatively new to the company and I can assure you that we take the FOG seriously and will do what we can to make it a great online haven for all Festool lovers.

Take care,
-Scott

@grbmds
For me there have been problems with FOG speed when compared with other sites I visit, for around 6 months. So what happens in the hrs after a major rebuild - it gets incredibly more slower, almost impossible to use - yes I know it's not a bank site - but my and others FOG experiences have been deninished for much longer than the last few days.

And remember, although it runs upon considerable volunteer effort, in the end the FOG represents a major international tool company.

@ScottW @TylerC
Thankyou for your Reply #77 Scott in which you outlined your objectives in moving the FOG to a new host. Given the speeds reached at lunch and after work today [AEST], some of your objectives may now at last be realised. [Hopefully this improved speed is not due by timing to most members in the Northern Hemosphere being asleep!?]

Still not able to post pictures.  The in-line attachment option does now appear, after having disappeared for a while, but no matter what I try to do (even if I just keep it on the default of end-of-post-expandable-thumbnail), I get a server error after the pictures upload and the topic I have been trying to create does not get created.

Edward,

Which option are you choosing for inserting the picture?  I was able to post a test image using 'Inline expandable thumbnail' and 'End of post'.

If you can't attach an image, could you include a little of the error text to give me a little help in solving this for you?

Which browser and operating system? I'm on Windows 10 and IE 11.

I had initial problems before the image posting options came back whereby (Clear Attachment) wasn't working. That was fixed, but then it seems it's broken again now.

Also, when I browse and add a photo but just leave the option to insert as "End-of-post expandable thumbnail" it doesn't add the insert code, but it does appear.

This should be an inline expandable thumbnail of my @Timtool clamp rack if it's working. (EDIT: Hmmmm, seems the auto image rotation bug is back too as that's not the correct orientation of the image)

This should be an inline full size image of a cheap cyclone from Aliexpress.  (EDIT: Hmmmm, seems the auto image rotation bug is back too as that's not the correct orientation of the image)

The above photos when I clicked on them actually rotated and expended so large I had to click again ad the other half showed up.  When i clicked again, the photo went back to the other half and from there it was back and forth never seeing more than half at a time.  to get back to viewing the rest of the page, I had to go to the back button in the upper corner of the screen. (Sorry if I am not speaking in computerese language)

Based in the pics in this thread, a full size inline picture works, but the expandable thumbnail should expand inside the post, and not on a new page.

The thin line on the bottom of the post you see when using an attachment should also not be visible.

I don't see anything rotating like Tinker mentions. Using Win 7.1 & FireFox 39.0

You should use your tools @Alex, stop being so protective over them.

FWIW...just to help with the sleuthing activities...

Using Mavericks OS X 10.9.5 and clicking on the thumbs;

Post 83: Edward's board expands on a new page and rotates 90 degrees CW

Post 84: Garry's clamps expands on a new page and rotates 90 degrees CW

Post 86: Alex's sanders expands on a new page and DOESN'T ROTATE

The extreme slowness I experienced around this time yesterday morning [AEST] has returned. This suggests to me the server is not coping during periods of peek use and is close to unusable, but off peek the FOG is lightning fast and a joy to use.

Re images - the options have returned and that is great news. Thank you.

If you don't like Signatures, just go to Look and Layout and tick No Signatures.

@Untidy Shop
I can confirm that the server had one last issue.  I had posted in another topic about this issue.  I've rebooted the server to make a setting change.  This issue should no longer cause problems.

Thanks Scott.

Since I posted a few mins ago, the Lightning speeds have returned as other posts are opened.  [smile]

@Holmz

Did it work better with the iPhone before the server move?

Can you give me some detail about the 'does not reply well'?  I'd like to look into that for you, but I'm not sure what you mean.

Thanks.

When I click on an in-line attachment it still opens in a new browser window, rather than just expanding in-line like they used to. I have to navigate back to the thread after viewing the image. Is this still a work-in-progress?

Overall the forum seems pretty zippy, nice job tuning it up.

I'm still working on it.  I've had to cobble some old code together to bring those functions back.  As it is functioning, I'm working on it as time permits.  I'll get it fixed soon.

Thanks,

Yes when I poked on reply I start entering txt, and the it pops out of reply mode, and when I poke back into the field it keeps popping out.
Worked fine before.
I almost always turn my phone off during day - so I ignore behavior unless it is a couple of days persistent.
I am not taking the bus today, so I'll won't get a chance to use it because I cannot drive and thumble through the phone.
