Festool video contest. Submit your video!
« on: February 20, 2013, 09:44 AM »
I know you guys like contests, so here's one that we're doing. It's not specific to the FOG. I will be putting together a FOG-specific contest with guaranteed international prizes soon.

Video Contest 2013

Festool video contest. Submit your video!

We enjoy seeing videos from our customers showing how they use their tools. You enjoy winning free Festool power tools. So, we decided to put the two together. Our recent videos from Gregory Paolini are a great example of the type of video we'd like to see.

How to enter.

  • Please use proper safety equipment including ear and eye protection. Any video showing unsafe practices will be disqualified.
  • Your video does not have to be "professional" looking or edited. Feel free to just do an impromptu video with your smartphone.
  • Videos must be one of two types: a testimonial video or a video showing Festool being used in an application of your choosing.
  • Your application style video can be of any Festool power tool or accessory of your choosing in the case. Testimonial videos do not need to feature a particular product, but may.
  • Videos should be less than 5 minutes in length.
  • You may enter multiple videos to increase your odds of winning, but each video must be on a unique tool or accessory. Limit ten videos per contest participant.
  • Videos showing what comes in the box or just going over the features of the tools are not eligible for this contest, but we do appreciate them.
  • Contest entries must be received no later than March 17th, 2013. Must be 18 years of age, a citizen of the United States or Canada excluding Quebec. Festool employees, dealers and affiliates are not eligible to participate.
  • Complete the entry form on our website and provide a link to your video to enter.

The prizes.

We'll select a random winner from each category (testimonial and application video). Each randomly selected winner will receive $750 (USD) in "Festool bucks" to spend on whatever Festool gear they choose.

Festool employees will also select the best five videos submitted and these videos will be shown at our Festool Connect event at JLC Providence on March 19th and attendees will vote on a grand prize winner. All five finalist will receive a CXS compact drill. The grand prize winner will receive $1000 (USD) in Festool bucks.

Everyone's a winner! Just submit your video on our website and we'll send you some Festool swag just for participating.

See our website for complete rules and conditions.

I might as well ask the questions:

1.  Can the videos also be posted here in addition to the contest placement requirements?
2.  Do videos have to produced within a certain timeframe rather than a link submitted by the deadline?
3.  For the sake of the contest rules - are Moderators considered eligible if the other criteria is met?  (Can't wait for the answer to this one.  Shane:" Peter, sure you would be eligible but what the odds that you could ever do a video that was less than 5 minutes are about the same as seeing a burning object flying thru the sky in Siberia.  Get real Dude. ".  [popcorn] [popcorn])

First, this is awesome!!  Cannot wait to see what folks create and I will try to put together an entry or more to this...

I noted that it states 10 videos per user on the FOG rules (bullet 6) but the web page states 5 videos per user.  Just wanted to get some clarification here -- is it 5 videos per category for a total of 10 or can you submit 10 testimonials or 10 Festool usage videos or any combination to reach 10?

Thanks!!

Scot,

Good catch, I had changed it to ten and forgot to update the web page, which has now been done. A total of 10 videos in one or both categories, your choice.

We (Festool employees) will select the five best videos that are submitted. All five of those "finalists" will be given a CXS drill. We will play those five videos at JLC and/or Connect and let the attendees vote on which they think is the best. That person is the grand prize winner and gets a $1000 USD shopping spree.

Shane, I read the rules and the prizes which are great, I was just pointing out that it has the Festool connect event as the 19th when the event is the 21st.  Unless I am mistaken and booked the wrong dates.  Below is what I was referring to.

Well, since Festo was technically Festool's previous name, I suppose it would be within the rules.

AWWWWWW!!!!  I just used the 1010 and midi in my classroom in conjunction with the Akeda dovetail jig as my opener to the Gilded Age/Second Industrial Revolution.  I describe to my kids how dovetails are cut by hand and then I have two students cut the tails and the pins on the Akeda with the 1010.  When they're done we brainstorm about possible advantages/disadvantages of both methods.  We end up talking about things like efficiency, consistency of work, unskilled labor, potential for injury, waste/environmental impact, initial capital investment, etc. - all things that we end up talking about for this unit of study.  The students remember it and I'm able to reference that demonstration and their work throughout the rest of the unit.  I'm kicking myself now for not recording it.

Remember, a simple testimonial video using your smartphone is eligible too. It only takes a few minutes and doesn't have to be professionally edited.

Just tell us why you like a particular tool, does it save you time, is it better than what you used before, what's your favorite thing about, etc.

well I'm finding out the hard way that new technology does not work good with old technology .
I'm having a terrible time trying to upload HD video with my laptop.
every time I loaded onto YouTube the picture quality is garbage.
so I hope I can have this done before the 17th.
I'm very tempted to take a hammer to my laptop!
new HD camera plus new software plus old laptop equals frustration!

Question:  Are you waiting until it is in its final version on youtube before you are forming your opinions?

Yes Peter,

I loaded my video this morning on Youtube, and I did not like the video quality.  I have tried 4 times.  I had my sofeware

crash on me at lease 3 times.  And about an hour ago, I loaded it onto Youtube and the video would stop halfway

into watching the video but the audio would continue to play.   I know that I need a PC or Mac for better video editing.

The laptop I am using is only a couple years old.  It's one thing I hate about computers, todays newest thing is old in a

year or two.

I'll get this thing worked out.....

Shane,

If you guys at Festool receive a video with poor quality, will you let me know?    [unsure]

I had just submitted my video and when I watch it on youtube it freezes a minute into it and then the video quality turns to....um.....trash.

I'm hoping it's Youtubes fault and not mine.

YouTube recommends that you export your video in MP4 format using the H.264 codec at 8MBps bitrate or better. If you're shooting in HD, then you should have a resolution of 1920x1080 or 1280x720.

http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1722171

A lot of times, software that comes with a product is buggy. Check the software for updates on their website.

The video you just submitted is not being seen by YouTube as HD and appears squashed.

Yeah.....I've changed the format, 3 times.  I'm trying to use Movie Studio software.  My new HD camcorder uses a format that Windows Movie maker doesn't

support.  I'm just having bad luck with this project.  I can't even change the format of the video to open it in Window Movie maker to redo the video.

Before I bought Movie Studio I was using Window Movie maker.   I guess I'll redo the whole process with  my old camcorder and use Windows Movie maker

and hope for the best.   I wonder if this is a sign, that I should just walk away from this project  [scratch chin].

NOPE!   I'm not giving up.....yet!

Try this free video converter if you just want to change the video file format to use in other software.  [wink]

And, be sure to re-submit your video once it's working right. Looks like it cuts off.

Hi Shane,
Thanks for putting this on! How strict are you guys on the 5 minute rule? I'm a minute over so just need to know whether I need to edit it down significantly. Thanks!
My first woodworking experience was as a Cro-Magnon. As a six year old, I took silver maple branches, stripped the bark, and washed the sap off the branches. While they were still wet, I would bend them into the shape of a bow, tie them in place, and air dried them for a few days. Then, with my newly made arsenal, I launched homemade arrows at squirrels with miserable accuracy.

I should have posted about the video length before since I've had a couple of questions about it already. Consider the 5 minutes a guideline, not a rule. It can be longer. But, generally people have a short attention span (myself included) so we just wanted to make sure we didn't get any 30 minute videos. So, rock on.

Peter,

None of the videos are currently in a playlist or anything on our YouTube channel. They should all be accessible on YouTube. Doing a search for "Festool" and filtering by the last month will show many of them I suspect.

I'm sure will publish some of them in a future SysNotes for all to view.

Thanks,

It's always great to share the experience of how our customers use our tools. So, this has been a particular fun contest for me.

I saw that video via the live stream; very very well done.  Wonder what type of blade he used to cut that log :)

I also actually liked some of the commercials that played over the stream focusing on different craftsman.

Kinda wish they left the microphone on when Nahm was doing the meet-n-greet.

wow . thats a great video/ they really put in the effort on the editing side
i love the slowmo of the blade starting up and the dust coming off the blade

it really shows the need for a solid piece under the material and not too have the blade out too far.

Was just perusing through some more of the entries on YouTube and ran across Warner's video:  http://m.youtube.com/index?&desktop_uri=%2F#/watch?v=kMi3VmwLJWw

Must say this one is pretty darn impressive as well.  Looks like you had a pro shoot it - maybe you did?  Shoot, now that I think of it maybe it wasn't even a contest entry and is a professional video by and for Festool?

Whatever the case may be, I like the video.  Nice job.

Yeah, Darcy's video is great. I love the story that many of us can associate with about a legacy of fathers sharing the craft with their sons, and them with their sons.

The video was shot by two folks that we work with on our new videos of accessories and set up how-tos. They did a great job with the videography and Darcy with his story. Definitely one of, if not the best, videos we've done in my opinion.

Here's the next installment from our video contest entry top five. A great video showing some of the advantages of the Domino.

I can't remember if I said it already, but even if I did, a huge thank you to everyone who participated. Our top videos were separated by very thin margins coming down to the final five. There are dozens of other videos that were also very, very well done. Some of those participants may have additional opportunities to work with us on videos in the future. PLUS, we'll be having another video contest later this year, more details coming soon so everyone has a chance to participate.

Also, congrats to our two randomly selected winners, our very own ScotF and Jeremiah R. Here are their videos. Scot did a series of videos on the HL 850 that were all very, very well done. Check his YouTube channel to see the others.

Ok, so here's a playlist with over 100 videos from the ones that were submitted, in no particular order other than the top 5 finalists being at the beginning. If you have 7  hours, feel free to watch them all.  [smile]

Spencer Ratliff should not have won this contest....it is obvious he does not appreciate tools from Festool if he mocks them.  I must admit that it was funny. .. but is that missing the point.
What will he do for the next contest, mock the tools he purchased with his Festool bucks?

Jamie, welcome to the forum.

Sorry you don't agree with the selected winner. I don't see it as mocking at all. If you watch his testimonial video I think you'll agree.

Spencer PS 300 video

Okay,  I like Spencer's take on the PS 300.  I take back what I said about his entry.  It was rather amusing and informative.... but I am almost 100 percent positive that there was no way he could have sliced through that large log round.  The weed... yes!  But the old growth chunk?!?  Most likely not!

Well over a hundred. I think the final number was close to 150.
