So I'll let out a little secret.  I'm a HUGE car guy.  Anything with wheels = love.

Any other car guys here?  ::)

You bet!  Thanks for those.
Heading for Reno and Hot August Nights in a couple of days.  A great experience, if you've never done it.  Am going to the Barrett-Jackson auction on Thursday just to look.  It'll be televised on Speed Channel Thurs thru Sat.

I hadn't seen this video before tonight, but your posting caused me to do a YouTube search for a Full Blown Motorsports Nissan GT-R. The first one that came up happened to be a video highlighting the new 1500+ hp intercooler I designed for the GT-R.

You can first see my intercooler at about 50 seconds and several times throughout the video after that. Then the video concludes with several passes on the 4-wheel drive dyno. That itty bitty 6 cylinder engine cranked out over 1000 hp at the wheels!!!!! If I read the screen correctly, it made over 1100 hp.

Edit: After looking at the video closer I noticed that only the rear wheels were turning. I didn't know you could shut down the AWD. John, the owner of the shop, has a 4wd dyno specifically for these cars.

This isn't your run of the mill grocery-getter. It's a low-cost super car that matches the $500k super cars. Off the showroom floor, it will do 194 mph with 575 hp AWD. It has an incredible "launch control" where the computer monitors the road and all 4 wheels to rocket this off the line at an amazing rate. (Search for Top Gear UK...they have featured the GT-R several times.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5SD-7z4QzI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5SD-7z4QzI)

The high volume intercooler uses an off-the-shelf core, but I designed the top and bottom caps specifically to fit the tight confines of the GT-R engine bay. The flowing design is one of the more complex SolidWorks challenges I have worked through. Each cap is CNC machined from a solid aluminum billet, and then welded to the core. Because this rather unique 6 cylinder engine is literally like two 3 cylinder engines side by side, each bank has their own turbo and their own intake throttle body. So it is really two intercoolers side-by-side, but with a deliberate bleed-through between them to assist in balancing the pressure between the twin turbos.

You can see the actual intercooler in the video, but here is the CGI image from SolidWorks. Oh, by the way, this is the same machine shop that fabricates the parts for my SCG-10 guides, and even some of Ron Wenner's products. That's how I came to know this legendary automotive super-tuner to design a bunch of car parts for him.

Here's another video of John (LJ) doing a dyno run with a GT-R. This was from last year so it is before I designed the intercooler. This one only makes 700 hp.....as if that is trivial.  [eek] But in this one, you can clearly see that the car/dyno is AWD.

Come to think of it, as memory serves me, something broke on the white car, and that could be why it was only a 2WD dyno run. Me and my son Tanner were supposed to go down to the shop to watch that dyno run, but something on the car broke, so we never got to see it personally.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGwKV5Mr1B4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGwKV5Mr1B4)

We've done quite a few projects together. Here is an intake manifold for a Honda S2000 that we recently wrapped up. This is a cast aluminum intake manifold for the S2000, 4 cylinder engine. It was one of the first projects we started, but took this long to get finalized and realized in actual product. This was by far the most complex design I have ever completed.

In order to get 850 hp out of this little 4 cylinder engine, John was pushing well over 35 psi into the factory manifold. So we designed a new manifold to give us similar volume at lower pressure. I don't remember the numbers, but I think this is like 4x the volume of the factory plenum, and the runners are massively wide and super short. Everything was designed to flow massive amounts of air with the least resistance.

Yes, you may notice that the cardboard box has Festool green color. It is! But I can't tell you what was originally in that box.

OOH Barrett-Jackson auction!!  Every once in awhile I'll catch bits and pieces on TV.  Someday (hopefully soon, with fingers crossed), I'll dabble into the American classics.  It's a rite of passage to me -- wouldn't be able to rightfully call myself an honest gearhead without.

Have fun mate!  Don't sell the house!

Mr. Christopherson, sir -- is there anything you are not awesome at?   [blink]

In a distant parallel universe I very briefly lived as an Authorized GT-R Sales Specialist, selling our store's first one.  In a previous life before that, I floated in and out of the automotive aftermarket and somehow convinced the right people that I was half decent at suspension design and setup, and somehow ended up helping a couple Honda Challenge / USTCC race cars move up a few places (still no podium though... poop)

That intercooler is one beautiful piece of work.  Here's a t-shirt (that you'll have to wait a bit for it's next production run) that you may enjoy (http://blipshift.com/products/cooler).  That VR38DETT is really something that still boggles the mind -- I wasn't much of an adopter in the beginning.  The RB26DETT just made more mechanical sense to me in three words -- cast iron block.  Maybe I'm even more old fashioned than I give myself credit for.  But hey, fast is fast, and I think it's still fair to say R35 aftermarket support is still nascent at best, so still many many more records to shatter in years to come!

Last I'm updated with is this - the AMS GT-R
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ7snULupqE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ7snULupqE)

What really took my breathe away though, was your S2000 intake manifold.  I'm a Honda boy (gotta stay true to my roots!)  Sure would love to see that thing on a flow bench and/or CFD images.  I'm still saving up for my own S2000, hopefully by early next year? *fingerscrossed.  My NASA (http://nasanorcal.com) instructor is kind enough to hold his unicorn, a 2004 AP2 with 12,000 miles on the clock, awaiting my purchase.  Eventually I hope to stash away a NSX to keep forever and ever.

Great thread and nice work Rick , I am a tool and die maker by trade so I can appreciate every thing that went into your design. I don't think I am mature enough yet for a car like the GTR so for now I will have to stick with my 2007 Audi RS4. That being said though feel free to design and build any performance enhancers for my ride and I will gladly test them out for you. [smile]
We just got back from a weekend in Oswego New York watching the super modifieds. I believe this track is one of the best kept secrets of auto racing. For a mere $20 you can enjoy a night of 800+ HP, 1800 pound cars running a 5/8 oval track that results in some very exciting racing.

Yea 700 is pretty wimpy. That's my goal with the Trailblazer I have parked in the garage.

Nice man!  If you're ever out here in San Francisco, do please check out Sonoma Racway (previously Infineon Raceway), and of course home of the corkscrew, good ol' Laguna Seca (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=laguna+seca).  <-- Click that GoogleMaps link and switch to StreetView to do some laps alongside ALMS cars ;)

Any track days out in the RS4?

Yes I have done a few track days at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park http://www.canadiantiremotorsportpark.com/ (http://www.canadiantiremotorsportpark.com/) It is an absolute blast and adrenaline rush . CT Motorsport park is actually the fastest track in North America and the third fastest track in the world. We will be camping there this weekend for the Canadian superbike races.
I have also done MANY laps at Laguna Seca but they were all on my PS3. [smile]

Today, a post on SAFETY!

You probably all know what it's like trying to tell a friend or family member of, well, better ways to drive.  Usually doesn't go too well.  Alas, I still find it to be our civil duty, as car guys, to help keep our loved ones safe.  So here's a (G)oldie from the past, about carrying cargo in vehicles.  Be it your work van with Systainers, or your family car with a child seat, please take 10-minutes to watch this clip.

Always use your cargo net and tiedowns.  Try your best to reduce loose items in the passenger cabin area.

Start at 11:18 to skip right to the crash testing bit.

Here's a video that features my car.  I'm the red car in front of the red #8 car at the start.  I'm starting 2nd and the camera car is 4th.  If you make it past 15:00 or so, the red car in position 5 makes an appearance running with the orange car that starts first.  Orange car is fast, but was making sure some problems he was having were good before coming up to speed.

It took the camera car a few laps to get his legs, but he started to open it up about halfway in. Well, sort of. His car was faster than the others, but he just wasn't using it. He held a reasonably good line around the track, but had poor throttle management.

The biggest comment I have for this guy is that "if you're not hard on the brakes, you should be hard on the throttle!!". He had a habit of having the clutch pulled in before the corner, but still had his right foot on the throttle enough to tickle the throttle with the clutch pulled in. Why would he do this? This wasn't a downshift. He was tickling the throttle before he moved his foot to the brake!

You should never be able to hear a downshift. It should only happen during braking, and only to prepare the car for going back to hard throttle.

He also had a habit of holding his up-shift on the straights. It was like he was hesitant to go into top gear. It doesn't matter whether you hit the next gear for 1-second before jamming on the brakes, you still go to that gear.

It took him a while to realize that he could hammer it through the high-bank concrete turn, but even then he was lifting quite a bit. You have to lift a little entering it because it isn't a smooth transition, but once in the bank, that's where it is a blast to totally hammer it and feel the G's push you into the seat.

He also had a habit of braking into the hairpin too late and overshooting the apex. He was still braking by the time he got to the outside line. A little bit more of that and he'd be in the grass.

His car appeared to be pretty fast with the way he could easily overtake several of them on that one corner at different times. (Appeared to be his favorite corner.) He could actually be pretty good with a little better throttle management.

This was probably the last video / last track day I did at Sonoma Raceway (previously Infineon Raceway) (http://www.trackpedia.com/wiki/Infineon_Raceway).  I'm running NASA HPDE Group 1+2, so naturally, all beginners.  Poor Integra has blown a head gasket since then and I haven't gotten around to fixing it  [crying]

My Integra's first video upon first stage build completion!  A little autocross at Oakland Coliseum!

So you'll probably notice that the car is called "Circuit-Sports Integra".  Circuit-Sports (http://www.phase2motortrend.com/circuitsports.html) is a small suspension specialist company which my friend owns, with emphasis on Nissans.  He wanted to branch into the Honda market, and I was lucky enough to hoodwink him into believing that I had an idea of what I was canoodling about -- thus the suspension system you see here is prototyped, and still on the car today!

Project DB8 Day 1 (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.411309492343.191901.575982343&type=1&l=43e0937f33)
- Stage 1 build's emphasis was all on suspension.  All rear suspension bushings are replaced with spherical bearings, and starting from rear trailing arm bushing forward, polyurethane.  Monotube dampers, F:10kg, R:8kg.

Project DB8 (aka NinjaCat) - Stage 2 (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150287943717344.331463.575982343&type=1&l=11a0d1d6f6)
- Stage 2 saw minor weight reduction, and minor power increase by cams, exhaust system, and engine tune.

Naahh, no worries. That "drag-your-nose-across-the-asphalt" point of view of the camera was pretty cool!!!!  [scared] [scared] That was fun to watch.  [cool] [cool]

I do have the same comment though. You should never hear a downshift, because it means you are using the engine to slow the car instead of the brakes. If you used the brakes, you could hold power for a couple more seconds before hitting the brakes. That would be enough to put you right on the tail of the car ahead of you and possibly power out of the corner ahead of them.

You could also hold a tighter line through the corners. You've heard the line in the Dukes of Hazard theme song, "....straightening the curves...", right? Enter wide and aim for the tight apex, and then exit as smooth as you can with full power. The straighter you can make the curves, the faster you can take them. Your inside tire was a little too far away from the apex. Your entry can be a little jagged because you're on 4-wheel brake, but your exit should be a smooth curve because you are on full 2-wheel power.

By the way, if the driver ahead of you is using the engine to slow the car, he's going to have to take a wide entry into the corner and a wide exit. When you come in with hard brakes, you can take a short entry, closer apex, and then a tighter inside angle coming out of the corner. That is the perfect time to make a pass leading into a straightaway. The tighter entry can get back on the power sooner and have the shorter line on the exit.

You should never be able to hear a downshift. It should only happen during braking, and only to prepare the car for going back to hard throttle.

He definitely held back on the first few laps to film his father and I (his father is in #8).  His car is definitely more powerful than the others.  He's a 1.8l prepped for SM, the 3 red cars are 1.6l prepped for SSM.  I think the orange car is a SSM also, but I don't remember and don't know the guy.
I partially agree with your throttle assessments.  His braking isn't his strong suit.  In his defense, that is a funky track.  It is severely crowned for drainage all the way around and doesn't have the nicest/smoothest pavement.  Also, there are at least two braking zones where there is a small rise followed by a small drop before entry.  Need to get most of the braking done during the rise as there is little grip over the crest and down into the entry.  The wide angle camera really hides that.

He also had a habit of holding his up-shift on the straights. It was like he was hesitant to go into top gear. It doesn't matter whether you hit the next gear for 1-second before jamming on the brakes, you still go to that gear.

This track and stock Miata gearing don't get along well.  If you do shift at the end of a couple of the short straights that put you right near red line you will lose a half a car length.  Miatas rev up around 7500RPM.  Best bet on a straight is to shift a little lower than that as power starts to drop off over 6700 or so, but the shift itself isn't worth it for the few seconds you're falling off the power band.

It took him a while to realize that he could hammer it through the high-bank concrete turn, but even then he was lifting quite a bit. You have to lift a little entering it because it isn't a smooth transition, but once in the bank, that's where it is a blast to totally hammer it and feel the G's push you into the seat.

The carousel is nasty.  We all pretty much launch into it near the speed we'll go around it, no smooth transitions there we're catching air.  But, it's bumpy and will spit you out if you try to go full throttle through it.  About 2/3 of the way around it smooths out and you can hammer it and get launched out.

He also had a habit of braking into the hairpin too late and overshooting the apex. He was still braking by the time he got to the outside line. A little bit more of that and he'd be in the grass.

Actually not a bad line through that turn.  It reminds me of a motocross when you get a bunch of cars going into it.  Some going deep, others tight, and all coming out about the same.  It's super tight with crazy off camber and the exit is the inside of the track onto the really long straight that follows.  Both left's that follow are full throttle if you setup the hairpin correctly, so it's really about the exit speed.  The lines that bigger cars, like vettes, have to take through there is almost comical watching on video.  There's just not much room to get the car fully turned and wind up pinned to the inside of the track on exit so you don't have to lift on little bend.  I don't go quite as deep in as I rotate the car more under brakes, but his way works.

His car appeared to be pretty fast with the way he could easily overtake several of them on that one corner at different times. (Appeared to be his favorite corner.) He could actually be pretty good with a little better throttle management.

I agree, a little more experience and he's going to be quite quick.  He has no fear and has improved quickly.

500 vintage cars going on the auction block....50 of them with under 20 miles.  :-)

[attachthumb=1][attachthumb=2] How about some Americanized Italians. Twin turbo charged 351.

[attachthumb=3]I was on a job, Eric who was on his way to pick up some material we needed, texted me this photo. It is a '71 push button, one of 89 built, there are less than 50 left. I can tell from the photo, it is as stock as the day it rolled out of the Lincoln Mercury dealer. When I got home, I showed my wife the picture and told her "if I had know it was there, two phone calls would have been made---first to the bank to transfer the funds, second to her to see if she wanted to go for a ride after I hooked up the hauler". Her only question---"where where you gonna put it"?

In the '70's we built about 50 cars for show and go. The first date with my future wife ended up being set up night for the World of Wheels when it was held at McCormick Place.

LOL... I knew that statement would be at my own risk  ::)

I'll first acknowledge my ignorance towards both Koenigsegg and SSC; frankly, I know very little of both, except for the obvious that they are incredibly fast.

While I was selling Nissans (however brief that period may have been; and boy sure seems an eternity ago), I often talked about the GT-R to potential clients.  My terms then, and still now, is that at that level of car, the supercar, the hypercar - lap times, aerodynamics, horsepower figures, G's; they all lose their meaning -- they are no longer the point.

The point then becomes a mere, "which club would you like to be in, sir?"

A prancing horse.  A raging bull.  A Porsche Club racer.  A three-pointed star.  A red H.

The issue becomes of lineage, of proven racing pedigree and history, of which to me defines a marque, a name, and frankly... a genre.

Truthfully, if I had to name the one trump card, the one qualifying metric that aces the McLaren F1... well, it's in a name -- Gordon Murray.  Maybe it tickles the essence of an absolute purist in design, a one-man show.  Maybe it's my own bias that Murray owned and daily drove a Honda NSX, and took many inspiration from.  Of which, to add to, the NSX was largely, nay, the NSX IS Ayrton Senna's legacy -- that adds quite a bit to it all too.

Of course all in all, who am I to judge?  I've never driven any of these incredible machines.  But I think that is precisely the tingle, the dream, that makes this all so mesmerizingly amazing.  As Shakespeare put it, "what's in a name?"

Two very good reads, written by Gordon Murray himself!

Very good stuff Paul.  And I think I may have spotted why you love Koenigsegg so much -- as evident at 4:26 in the factory tour of your first clip.  Take another peek and let me know if you see what I see.  Pay close attention to the goodies on the right hiding in the back... and of course the gorgeous banner on the wall  ;)

I did always appreciate the phantom insignia, bearing honor and tribute to the First Squadron of the Swedish Air Force.

I'll add to Tour de Koenigsegg with...

I actually was looking specifically for Festool in the videos  ;)

I can't vouch for the rest of the world, though in all probability it is probably so -- all authorized Koenigsegg Service Centers in China MUST use Festool Automotive System for paint and body repair.  It's part of the agreement between Koenigsegg and the Service Centers as a way to guarantee exceptional quality of workmanship.

Little bit of trivia knowledge I picked up while I visited TTS CN for Automotive Systems Training last year :)

Just been working for a guy who had a brand new DB9 in quantum silver (james bond colour). He was showing me around it , very nice. The best bit was the key , it has crystal glass on one end with the Aston logo inside. You push it in the dash to start the car and the crystal lights up.

I watched the movie "Rush" at the Thursday night premier, and sorry, but I was very underwhelmed, especially after the build up to it by various racing announcers. The story was told well, and the acting was pretty good, but there was little racing footage. The 1966 movie "Grand Prix" has always been one of my favorite films (and always will be), and I thought that "Rush" would bring all that to another level; not so. In fact, except for starts and other stuff on the pit straight, there wasn’t much of anything; hiss boo.

I don’t know if I would have spotted it on my own right away, but they mentioned in the NBC Sports 1/2 hour show about how the film was made that they used the same movie set (with changes to signs and such) for the pits and spectator stands. Not sure where they filmed the other parts of "various tracks they were supposedly at" other than the pit straight. I think the short part showing Lauda's crash at Nurburgring was the real original footage, so they probably didn't film at all there. (edit by dicktill: Wrong! Just did a search about this, and for the movie they did film (re-film it) it at the actual crash site. Kudos to Opie, Richie Cunningham, Steve Bolander, and er Ron Howard!) Anyway it lost some luster with all this; "Grand Prix" did it right!. And finally, although they had a slew of the real original 1976 F1 cars, they didn't show much in the way of closeups of suspension and engines.

Virtual VTEC: Tour Honda's Museum on Google Street View

In addition to a modest gift shop, café, and archive room, the first floor also features a special section dedicated to Asimo. Here, Honda shows no fewer than 12 evolutionary steps it took to produce the ultimate live-in assistant. Alongside Asimo is a display dedicated to the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle. There's plenty to see on the second floor, whether you're a fan of Honda's two or four-wheeled vehicles. Included among the collection of cars are the NSX, an Accord station wagon, a first-generation Honda Prelude, and the Civic. One wall is even dominated by Honda's collection of lawn mowers. Finally, the third floor is dedicated to the automaker's motorsports heritage. There, you'll find a 1990 McLaren Honda MP4/5B, which Ayrton Senna raced (and won) in a number of GPs.

(Took me a bit to figure out how in the world to "climb the stairs" to go up.  Dedicated "floor" buttons on the navigation (3, 2, 1) right below zoom depth!)

The BMW Films series, The Hire was a series of eight short films produced for the Internet between 2001 and 2002.  All eight films featured popular filmmakers from across the globe, starred Clive Owen as, "The Driver," and highlighted the performance aspects of various BMW favorites.

So... I don't think I've mentioned it here yet, but I'm addicted to this summer's underdog blockbuster hit, Pacific Rim.  Some may know that Blu-Ray was released yesterday, so naturally, I picked up my copy and oogled all night at the absolutely amazing imagery and mechanical detail.

A thought did pop up.  Just exactly how large are these Jaegers and Kaiju?  Do we have any direct analog comparison today?  So I started Google'ing around (yes this is what I do afterhours when I'm supposed to be working on our online store *hinthint and decide to noodle off).

Stumbled across this bad boy:

Seawise Giant, later Happy Giant, Jahre Viking, Knock Nevis, Oppama, and finally Mont, was a ULCC supertanker and the longest ship ever built. She possessed the greatest deadweight tonnage ever recorded. Fully laden, her displacement was 657,019 tonnes (646,642 long tons; 724,239 short tons), the heaviest ship of any kind, and with a draft of 24.6 m (81 ft), she was incapable of navigating the English Channel, the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal. Overall, she was generally considered the largest ship ever built, as well as the largest self-propelled human-made object ever built. She was sunk during the Iran-Iraq War, but was later salvaged and restored into service. She was last used as a floating storage and offloading unit (FSO) moored off the coast of Qatar in the Persian Gulf at the Al Shaheen Oil Field.

The vessel was sold to Indian ship breakers, and renamed Mont for her final journey in December 2009. After clearing Indian customs, she was sailed to, and intentionally beached at Alang, Gujarat, India for demolition.

To put that into goth-tech sci-fi perspective and comparison:

Gipsy stood at 260 ft tall, weighing in at 1980 tons
Seawise Giant lays 1504.1 ft long, weighing in at 91704.48 tons

Granted in retrospect, a land-going vehicle versus a sea-faring vessel isn't even remotely a valid comparison anyway, but hey, let's just enjoy the absolute grandeur of scale of human marvel yea?  ::)

And icing on the cake... this post wouldn't be complete without this... The Helicarrier

A repost... but hey, safety #1 folks!  Please share with friends and family :)

Rain/snow season is around the corner, so let's get those windshields prepped up right.  First line of defensive driving is improving visibility!

I just did mine last night, scraper + clay + rain-x... now just waiting for the rain to come.  Bring it!

This has been a very interesting and enjoyable thread.

How about a Mustang Monday?

I'm a big Ford guy (trucks and SUVs) but have never owned a Mustang.

If I ever were to get one, the 2013/2014 Shelby GT500 would be at the top of my list. I've been told the 2013 production was around 3500 cars, and the 2014 production will likely be less than 3000. I do know that they've stopped taking orders for the 2014.

Rumor has it (and we all know about rumors  [smile]) that this will be the last production Mustang to have the Shelby name, and the last to be supercharged. Are the days of the factory built "muscle car" over?

Thanks for that video, Phil, I had not seen it before.

I also like the vintage training film on power steering. Reminds me of trade school back in the "olden" days.  Gotta love that music.  [smile]

Here's a more current video showing some of the engineering of the drivetrain on the new GT500. When a massed produced car with such power and torque was first released I wondered how they were going to keep the crazies from scattering parts all over the highway. So far they seem to be holding up well.

This'll bend some minds...

Donk'y Tuesday?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKY7WyUU8Nc&feature=youtu.be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKY7WyUU8Nc&feature=youtu.be)

Hi-Risers are a type of highly customized automobile, typically a traditional, full-size, body on frame, V8 powered, rear wheel drive American-built sedan modified by significantly increasing the ground clearance and adding large-diameter wheels with low-profile tires. Depending on the model and style of body, autos customized in this manner can be labeled "donk," "box," or "bubble."

Hi-risers originally grew out of the Dirty South subculture, but the trend has spread across the United States. Vehicles customized in the hi-riser style are distinguished by their oversized (even disproportionate) wheels, ranging from 20 inches to 30 inches or more in diameter (largest being 50 inch), as well as fanciful custom paint-jobs and expensive audio equipment. Suspension modifications similar to those employed on lifted pickup trucks are made to give adequate clearance for the large wheels. Often the suspension is modified so the front end sits slightly higher than the rear end, giving the car a swaggering appearance. Because of the exaggerated look gained from installing a lifted suspension and enormous wheels, donks are also known as "hi-risers" or "sky-scrapers."

This is my bike that I built with my friend Chris. It's a 990cc 101rwhp AWD KTM Adventure and it's one of a kind. I thought it would be fun after we built it to do the worlds first two wheeled motorcycle burnout. It was. I shot the video with my friend and studio partner Tommy in an afternoon. Of course I also rode it too so mostly I was placing cameras and GoPros.

Question then would be... if we are ever so lucky, would you rather a P1, or the original mack daddy, the F1?

Make you a deal -- If I ever win the lottery you get a vehicle of your choice if you'd return the favor if you win it big.  Deal?  ;)

(for those really lazy and have not clicked the Jalopnik link, here's the video... lol)

As impressive as a P1 is... being a Porsche guy myself, this video show how incredible the 918 is.  LOVE that car... very excited to watch the Code Racing team this year...

That is awesome! I was so impressed that I ran down to the local Porsche dealer this morning to plunk down my $845,000 (base price) for one, only to find out the entire production run is sold out.  [sad]

The Porsche 918 Spyder lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in an amazing 6:57. Still a record I believe.

Here's a video of a Shelby GT500 doing the same lap in 7:38. The 918 obviously has far more sophisticated engineering for the track.

There's a lot more tire squealing with the Mustang as it is muscled through the curves, but still not bad for a "cheap" car.  [smile]

It is funny.  The specs on that car don't seem like reality.  People see 800+ HP and handles like a bullet train yet has the potential to get 70+ MPG with the Hybrid motors.  If I had 1 Mill, I would absolutely pick this car up.  I have driven the 2014 GT3 and fell in love.  My 91 is looking soggy these days yet I still love my mistress :D

I am waiting for the RS to be out.  My father in law is the GM for Porsche in our area, so a backstage pass helps on getting in that car.  If you haven't looked at videos of the GT3 (still achievable at 140K!) do so, you will have a smile on your face all day (and night) long.

Thanks, Phil. To tell the truth, the car still scares the heck out of me. I haven't driven a manual shift in over twenty years, and one that breaks traction so easily is taking a lot of getting used to.

These cars are programmed at the factory so that the supercharger is turned off until the car is driven a continuous 5 miles. I guess for the protection of unwary transport drivers and lot boys.

Mine had 5.5 miles on it when it arrived, the supercharger was not functioning yet, but it still seemed to have quite a bit of power. I was not ready for what happened at 11 miles, stepped hard on the throttle and almost lost control.

This car was hard to find, it took two months of searching dealer inventories nationwide to locate the one I bought. I wanted a convertible in Sterling Gray Metallic with black stripes, and they only made 67 of those (the 2014 is already out of production and there will be no more of these cars made). A dealer here in Southern California did happen to have the car I wanted but would not budge from $10,000 OVER STICKER!

I finally found one in the wheat fields of Imperial, Nebraska (pop. 2100) for MSRP and had it shipped to Los Angeles. The folks at Imperial Country Ford were great to work with, far more "down home" than most dealers out here.

To be honest, the car is still scaring the heck out of me.

Even with our moderate temperatures the OEM Goodyear F1 tires just don't get any traction. Step on the gas in gears 1 through 4 and you're all over the road. They say these tires are designed to do better when very hot, either because of the weather or after several miles on the track (or the water box at the strip).

I've heard that a lot of Shelby buyers in the colder climates are replacing the tires on the way home from the dealer, or putting their cars in storage until spring.

Still, I love this car so much that I sleep in it every night. Okay, I'm sleeping in it mostly because I bought it without telling my wife. Not as easy to sneak past her as a Festool.  [smile]

A good read on the phenomenon that is THE TRAFFIC JAM.  Oh, and proposed solutions too :)

http://www.smartmotorist.com/traffic-and-safety-guideline/traffic-jams.html (http://www.smartmotorist.com/traffic-and-safety-guideline/traffic-jams.html)

"Traffic jams often occur on highways wherever two lanes must merge into one. Lanes of cars cannot merge if there are no large gaps between cars. Therefore, drivers who create large gaps between cars will ease this type of traffic jam."

To ease this type of jam:

- Maintain a large space ahead of your car.
- Encourage one, two even three cars to merge ahead of you.
- If traffic slows to a complete stop, KEEP TWO CAR-LENGTHS OF SPACE OPEN AHEAD OF YOU.
- Never "punish" merging drivers by closing your gap.

Sometimes it pays to be afraid of a car. Below is a photo of a recent incident where a guy lost control of his brand new Shelby (59 miles), which is easy to do with these things. He admits that he was showing off in a parking lot. Luckily only minor injuries, car totaled.

I sure would be crying if this happened to me:

I guess you're right, Tom. As I drive the car more my initial fear is gradually becoming respect. A respect that I hope I never lose.

As I look at that wrecked Shelby I can't imagine how upset I would be (at myself) for being so careless. I go nuts over a ding in a door.  [smile]

It's import to remember that high power / high performance cars are EXPENSIVE TOYS ... and toys can get broken when you play with them. Yes, sometimes they even bite back.

Mostly these days I feel like I've got the exotic motor out of my system - but it doesn't take much to realise it's just an impulse away [eek]

The only thing I can suggest is finding opportunities to safely test the limits and learn about your toys - certainly not in the car park though!

Well with the Corvette costing about the same as a Porce 911 here its a no-brainer - 911 Carrera 4S all the way.

And as blasphemous as it might sound I much prefer the 911 4S over even a Ferrari 430.

Especially here up north having 4wd is essential with sand roads in the summer and snow in the winter.

(And sadly no, I don't own any of these cars, but luckily know people who do and let me have a go on track days every now and then ;-)

Formula One vs Road Cars

In February 1991, McLaren/Honda carried a test at the Estoril track. The race, recorded for British TV, had a pretty unique line-up: Ayrton Senna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayrton_Senna) driving his F1 MP4/5B; Allan McNish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_McNish) driving a Porsche 911 Turbo and Gareth Rees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gareth_Rees_(motorsport_commentator)) behind the wheel of a Honda Concert 1.6.

The Concert was lined up first on the grid, with the Porsche and F1 cars behind. Senna gave McNish a headstart of over a minute and started 50 seconds behind Rees - but that didn’t prevent him from finishing ahead of both of them in just one lap!

The times were:

1) Ayrton Senna 1:14:00

2) Alan McNish 2:08:00

3) Gareth Rees 2:28:00

Heya welcome to the automotive thread Roy!  There's a little car guy in all of us, so this is a nice lil venue for us to light up some tires and appreciate the mechanical symphony that is the automobile.

Here's one more piece of trivia that you may or may not know -- The Granat family of Festool abrasives was initially developed for Porsche, as part of Festool Automotive Systems, as a solution for Porsche's low VOC (super hard) paint, which was extremely harsh on sand paper.  Seeing the improved durability and clog-resistant properties, Granat eventually made its way over to Festool's woodworking catalog, which is what we here in Northern America are more familiar with now :)

Alright ya'll.  Time for some serious business here.

Just kidding -- I can't say that with a straight face...  [big grin]

But on the real, here's Festool Automotive Systems for Headlight Restoration using one of my favorite sander/polishers, the one and only, RO 90!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVHkQSc2HVk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVHkQSc2HVk)

All items as listed in the video are in stock!  The MPA's can also be used on the body for paint polishing, MPA5000 will get you a real nice shine for light colors, and I even have MPA11000 to get that mirror gloss finish on dark colored vehicles.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgSLEVi_SPg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgSLEVi_SPg)

As noted in one of the previous videos on auto paint polish, an advantage for beginners in using a Rotex RO sander/polisher is precisely in the oscillation of the pad in Rotex mode -- helping in dissipating heat.

For us virtual guys, "Kaz", the grand visionary behind Gran Turismo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QESGXTFFZXM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QESGXTFFZXM)
This film is about drive. It's about the passion and creative drive of Kazunori Yamauchi, the architect behind Gran Turismo's birth and breath-taking fifteen-year evolution. This film will trace his relentless willingness to challenge himself, to hold none of his past achievements sacred, and push beyond the virtual divide in his pursuit of perfection. Through the support of PlayStation, Kaz's journey has forever changed the gaming and automotive landscape and in doing so, has redefined how we perceive the relationship between art, entertainment and culture.

And, a little stroll down memory lane

Found this old video circa 2011 of my buddy in his Impreza STi, after I snuck past him in my Integra.

National Auto Sport Association (NASA) High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) Groups 1 and 2 have limited passing zones, so you end up with traffic jams.  Once a gap opens up though, a string of cars will punch through.

Funny stuff happening behind me that I wasn't fully aware of.  Poor NSX...  ::)

I think I noticed it first when I watched that hooptie one.  I mean, I went to F1 boston a couple of times, and I had a death grip on the wheel my first couple of races.  Killed my wrists.  Eased up on the pressure, and it was so much more fun and felt more in control.

Would love to take a hooptie around a race track!

Ya know, my NASA driving instructor has always told me to just bring a rental car to the track.  We're doing non-competitive open track driving events, so he said just kick back, relax, and work on fine tuning my line, while opening up eyes and ears to take in more sensory input at the slower pace of the rental.

Seems a very good idea (he does it himself plenty), but I'm not sure why I feel more at ease putting my own track car at risk as opposed to a rental.  Social mechanical responsibility??  ::) *shrug

That Ferrari F12 looks pretty nice, and affordable too. If you leave off some of the options you might get one for under $500,000. Better hurry though, they only plan on making 7000 per year.  [smile]

I think Aston Martins are beautiful cars, but a new one in Oz is just insane money (as is a new Ferrari). Anyway, my fav AM would be a DB5.

Sadly I look at cars these days and tend to see the last idiot that was driving that marque!

Sad news:

LITTLE RIVER-ACADEMY (September 12, 2014) A man is dead after an accident at a drag strip racetrack in Bell County, Texas.

The Bell County Sheriffs Department confirms the man lost control of his 2013 GT500 Mustang at the Little River Dragway Friday night.

The man has been identified as Allen Mouton of Killeen, a 48 year old father of 3.

Lt. Donnie Adams of the Bell County Sheriff's Office says the driver was making a single-car run down the drag strip when he hit the guard rail at the halfway point before hitting a tree.

The strip was open for racing tonight.

No other injuries were reported.

oh my god....... rest in peace....  [crying]

My family (parents) are immensely opposed to my love and participation in motorsports.  No poetry around it; cars are dangerous.  But such is the passion.  If it's my time to go, I'd prefer to go out doing something that I love.  (flames optional).  The only responsible thing for me to do is take as many safety precautions, mechanically, mentally, as I can to try to bring myself home after each track event.  I mean, trust me, I'd like to come home too.

Drive safe ladies and gentlemen.  And as noted before, we are the gifted few, blessed with automotive and mechanical empathy.  It is our duty to teach our loved ones ways to be safe behind the wheel.

Please be safe guys!

I've recently stepped out of motorbikes. My wife would never stop me from doing something I love, but I could see the stress on her face as she said "enjoy yourself, be safe" as I'd head off to the track or a leave for a "serious" ride.

I like to watch drag racing, but it's not something I'd personally do ... can't think on many things that dangerous you could pack into 10 seconds!

I feel for the family.

Just as I'm typing this a British Customs email has hit my inbox - a sign? Maybe I should get myself a nice little Triumph Thruxton Ace 900 maybe - I'm never done the cafe racer thing.

Thanks PHIL, not just Aussie V8s anymore, that was a Merc than was taken into the wall by a GM Aus Holden. This year there was Volvo too! The cartoonist Mark Knight expressed this European influence very well -

They actually survived that. Driver pulled out the passenger before the thing went up in flames.

For better or worse.

It's Aussie V8s at Bathhurst 1000 time.

First big crash for the weekend in first hours of practice, out goes the favourite with a broken leg. Two Marshals hurt.

Edit. Since posting, UTube have removed the video due to copyright. So try this link from the Australian Broadcasting Commision.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-10-09/bathurst-qualifying-halted-after-chaz-mostert-suffers-crash/6842620 (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-10-09/bathurst-qualifying-halted-after-chaz-mostert-suffers-crash/6842620)

This link will only work for around 48hrs.

And now we know seven Marshels involved, three injured.
