Bucket lists ??
« on: April 27, 2016, 07:27 AM »
Not in any way trying to be morbid in the "before I die" thinking ... just really interested in sharing thoughts on those big tickets that tend to be the things that occupy a lot of our dreams or memories.

A couple of dream moments for me would be ...

- free diving with a pod of dolphins

- watching the sunrise come up over an African plain (yeh .. sitting on the roof of the Land Rover after a night round the campfire)

I don't know if this counts but I used to ride motorbikes (last one a BMW R100GS) and I quite fancy buying another (thinking of BMW R1200RS, R1200GS or S1000XR).

My two life obsessions are carpentry and climbing mountains. I'm not interested in any of the famous mountains like Everest, but living near Vancouver, I'm surrounded by lifetimes worth of climbing objectives. My list of want to climbs never gets shorter, every summit seems to reveal 10 more.

Personally I don't believe in "bucket lists".

They seem to commercialise/quantify the objectives of our life.  For me I just try to take each day/week/month/year as it comes, try to find some form of joy in each as they arise.

We could write 40 things to do on a piece of paper, but that implies if we don't do them all we have somehow failed in life; because circumstances didn't work out. Life is about playing the cards you're dealt and making the most out of the situations you find yourself in, not trying to follow a list as if you're in the grocery store and need to make sure you don't forget something!

A while back when I was able to spend many hours wondering about things I was advised to come up with a bucket list of things I wanted to do.  My list was rather short.  Luckily I was able to dispose of that list and now just enjoy each day.

That being said, one day I want to visit both Australia and Hawaii.

Things must be bad...

Here I am on the oral morphine again and find myself on the FOG. It is a strange feeling as though I am observing myself from a few feet away.

I would like to visit Williamsburg again, drive north to see old friends in Kingston Ontario and travel first class on the various planes.

I also would like to get hold of the new Festool impact driver before anyone else - now that should stir a few hornets nests especially as I have no idea whatsoever if Festool even plan to make one (but they would be nuts not to) !

Time for a sleep now.

Having re-read the above I feel ashamed as it sounds far worse than it is. I broke my back many years ago during my military service and all was well for a long time. Arthritis has settled in there, and other places, and so now and again I have to dull the pain. I will be fine in a few days I am sure.

The real nuisance is that I am now way behind with some video work. Never mind.

They'll be releasing one at some time. I was sent a Festool survey maybe 3-5 months ago and it was centered around what features you would like to see in an impact driver.

I'm fortunate to have travelled a lot in years gone by, so whilst travel is no longer high on my list I think I'd like to go on an african safari. Not to hunt just to watch all the wildlife there. Be awesome seeing them in their natural env. Any maybe take the missus to Vegas (and bring her back of course). [big grin] She also wants to travel around NZ in a big camper so that's on the cards as we get older.

@Acrobat I'd deffo do the NZ camper and the safari in Africa .. Only thing I'd want to shoot would be the game hunters - beyond my comprehension why people would kill if not to eat or to protect [eek]

@jobsworth

Funny tidbit ... The land my house is on was part of a massive parcel of land that was donated to the Salvation Army a zillion years ago. When the Salvation Army divided up the land for sale, they introduced a covenant on the land that goes something along the line of forbidding the property to ever become a seller of alcohol ... so drinks are always free at Kev's place [wink]

Sadly no immediate travel plans. The better half and I are planning the next big step in our lives -we'd like to get out of Sydney and move somewhere with space to stretch ... potentially off the grid or at least independent of the grid. I'm looking a at couple of startups too, having finished a bank contract and not wanting to repeat the corporate treadmill thing.

That's all probably driving the bucket list thinking.

I'd definitely second the African safari trip and do some shooting (with my camera) while there. Maybe a South Africa + Tansania  + Seychelles combo while there. Would love to climb Kilimanjaro, but I don't think my knees are in shape to do that anymore (snow boarding accident)

Another one is to do another round the world trip this time going South America with a route something like Finland -> Mexico (Aztec ruins) -> Equador (Galapagos) -> Peru (Lake Salinas & Machu Pikchu) and then come back island hopping through the Asian Pasific -> Easter Island -> Fiji -> Vanuatu -> Find an island to rent for a month somewhere around there with great snorkeling -> Jakarta -> Hong Kong -> Home.

Also would like to find a suitable summer cabin close to home on a nice lake to actually have the space for a workshop to build stuff in.

I guess there is a longer list of smaller things, but I guess those would not qualify as bucket list items.

Phil I hope you make it here!  I too would love to fly on a 747 before they go away.

Now for a true story - sorry it will be long.

When I travelled as a Construction Project Manager the company I worked for had a policy that all tickets booked would be fully refundable (full fare) tickets.  After the first year year of traveling I was in one of the highest classes of the frequent traveller programs for a particular airline.  It was possible at that time for me to earn three free tickets a month.

I used my freebies to send families and friends on vacations.  My wife had a fabulous experience on a trip with her friend (I staid home to take care of the pups) and when she came home she told me about it and asked me to look for a flight attendant by the name of Alice and described her looks.

I spent the next two years traveling and looking for Alice.

My last business trip was to Portland, OR.  On the return trip I was in First Class and got onto a jet that was only two weeks old and the leather smell was like in a new car.  My day was done and a flight attendant came to take my drink order and holy cow her name was Alice.  Everything fit - the name and the description.  I apologized for the lame comment that was coming and then told her I had been looking for her for two years  [eek].  I explained what had happened and she repeated details of my wife and her companion and the trip that only I knew.

I was shocked.  I also noticed that there were only three people in first class and there were about 24 empty seats.  I told here this was my last trip and I would like to fill up first class with passengers of her choosing from the back that she thought would never fly first class.  I had more than enough upgrades on me to make that happen for 24+ passengers.  She asked me if I was certain and then talked to the pilot.

It couldn't happen because they didn't have enough booze and first class food on the plane.  I enjoyed my flight - I had found Alice despite all the odds and could tell my wife I said thank you.

Thank you Kev for prodding me into thinking a bit harder about my next few years!

(....) For me I just try to take each day/week/month/year as it comes, try to find some form of joy in each as they arise. (....)

I've held this same "take each day as it comes" point of view Bob for most of my life, and I've had some wonderful adventures and successes by riding along with the opportunities that came my way ... but now in my relatively comfy retirement, with relatively good health (so far) and a few pennies to spare, I'm getting very itchy feet, and thinking I should now create a few 'opportunities' of my own to chase while I can.

Like you Bob, I always felt 'bucket lists' were too similar to 'to-do' lists (and I've been known to make a to-do list of my guilt-inducing, not-yet-finished to-do lists), but maybe now I should write a nice, short, stress-free, smile-inducing bucket list ...

 ... attend a Mardi Gras ...
... take a hike in those Bavarian hills ...
... visit a Welsh Eisteddfod (a national music festival, not a million miles from where I live, so no excuses!) ...
... go skinny-dipping in one of those Scandanavian saunas ...

I'm printing it now, and I'll pin it just above my monitor  8)

Thank you Kev.

Hi!

I try to live in the present, not past or future and enjoy every day to the max.

Call me a dreamer or whatever but there are still a couple of things I'd like to make happen:

1. EB-5 Visa and waking up on the first morning in my apartment in NYC.
2. Visiting each and everyone of my friends I made in the US over the years in one big tour across all states.
3. Establish a charity foundation that takes care of people not causes.

4. Experience a start and a landing on an mil. aircraft carrier (Never gonna happen for a million reasons, but I would love to. I'm always smiling like a kid on Christmas morning when a pilot with whom I fly starts or lands really powerful)

Kind regards,
Oliver

I'd like to be able to focus on woodworking about one-half time, with the following little details:
(1) First, my passion for woodworking is driven by a desire to show off the beauty of the wood that I work with.
(2) Build a dedicated shop given what I've learned in the basement and garage over the years.
(3) Be able to travel to a variety of places, talk to local craftsmen, and bring back local woods for projects.
(4) Get really good at hand tools and arcane joinery - gives you a feel for working with rather than against wood.
(5) Make multiple heirloom projects for all of the grandkids.  Make a few projects that would be valued long after I'm gone.

Combined with other non-woodworking interests in the other 150% of my time, I think I could stay busy :).

I saw the film called the Bucket List, it was touching and funny..

I've got no real reason to make a Bucket list, I have some things I'd like to do, I work doing practical maintenance for several building and courtyards in a Scandinavian city. I'm mostly on my own, but the change of scene from place to place means I'm never really bored.

I guess on item on mu bucket list is to make some useful contributions using my Festool setup, getting a small shop set up to aid in that. I have other interests that a cultivate in turn, and though it might seem like I'm aiming too broad, by keeping the same subjects simmering away over the years I make some real progress, hardly noticing it myself, so the you would say I'm not straining away in my daily life driven by blind ambition.. Slow and steady progress. I don't worry too much about what I manage to get done, but cultivating a positive internal personal energy, focused friendly open, and quietly productive gets me through a  Bucket list that I don't even have written down and never look at..
