Finger prints don't work on iphone
« on: September 24, 2017, 12:00 PM »
Hello

I wonder if other working men find that the tough thick skin on the finger tips makes finger print identification unusable?

I need to get a biometric scan of my fingers for a piece of id now I'm wondering if this process is doomed to fail..

Sorry Peter Halle, couldn’t resist

I think that the iPhone is a wonderful phone and that they make quality products.  But whereas there seems to be a simultaneous discussion over on the Apple User Forum  about this perhaps it would be better to discuss this over there.

If you want the URL use google.  Links can't be posted here.

This isn't specifically iPhone related, but the fact that many users here work with their hands alot I assumed there were others that either had problems with fingerprint identification on a general basis.

Additional this is the off topic subforum so likely not an issue as to forum rules so no need for Peter Halle to intervene.

Thinking about this...how about choosing a different finger, say one or both of your little fingers that may not be as callused?

Thinking more about this...the thumb and forefinger are probably used the most for work and are also probably chosen the most to use on an iPad/iPhone. [tongue]

I think I'll program both of my little fingers and see if that increases my success rate. Current success rate with iPhone 50%, success rate with iPad, maybe 20%.

I just started use fingerprints on my iPhone and IPad to unlock.  I have been leaving fingerprints all over the screens for years.

I have more of an issue with my thumb than with my pinky.  Unlocking with a pinky seems strange.

Cheese,

this site needs humour because of late it has become a place where all people do is knock everything Festool do, they are a company, a German company at that, as such they cannot drop everything just because one person isn't happy, if I spend my whole day moaning about everything that breaks or complaining about no one responding within 30 seconds then I would literally spend all day moaning and complaining. Get a life everyone, stuff happens, think positive and things get better.
Nice to see this link is starting to get humourous, more of it I say.

Preferablywood,

Go and take a chill pill

Sorry no chill pill needed Fingerprint is for biometric id required for international travel, so I'm not going to chill until this thing get cleared up. Read up on it elsewhere and fingerprint scanning is problematic. People who knit or cooks who handle hot things are known to have issues for example

Best thing about using your pinky is that you don't have to put your tea cup down...  [big grin]

That is a thought. Though I'm not a big tea drinker.

Another thing you can do is add the same finger/thumb more than once.  I've found that helps the system identify better.

Preferablywood,

I have an iPhone and very very badly damaged fingers due to working with timber since the age of 12, i have no problems with fingerprint scanning because it is turned off, complete gimmick to make you spend more money on their products, live in the real world, use a pass code, far quicker and fool proof.

I think there are two versions of apples fingerprint id. I have an iPhone 5s and ipad pro that i believe both have the first version of fingerprint id. I find it sucks most of the time for me. I wondered if it was my carpenters fingers, but having asked other people with my phone they say it sucks too. Maybe version 2 is better?

 "chill pill" comments also suck!

I see this problem with my Samsung Galaxy S7 when I have been doing work like sanding that seems to temporarily damage the fine details of fingerprints.  If you get an injury on the fingertip you're also out of luck.  I assume the fingerprint technology used by police and security agencies is more sophisticated.

Maybe version 2 is better?

I have the 2nd gen on both the iPhone & iPad. It’s definitely better than the 1st gen but still not terrific.

I believe the iPhone 8 is now equipped with Gen 3.
